Description

(54) DOORS AND INSET WINDOW FRAMES THEREFOR (71)l We, BECKETT, LAYCOCK & WAT- KINSON LTD., a British Company, of Acton Lane, Harlesden, London NW10 7NL, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to doors and inset window frames therefor.
It is known to provide a door with an inset window frame. Such a door may be a sliding door and may be an external door of a railway carriage.
According to the invention an insetwin- dow frame for a door comprises an outer frame for fixture to the construction of the door and defining a window aperture, and an inner frame for retaining at least one glass pane within the window aperture, the inner frame comprising a main frame member and a keep frame member removably held in position by screws, and the outer frame having a flange projecting inwardly oiE- the window aperture and interposed between the main frame member and the keep frame member of the inner frame to which flange at least the main frame member of the inner frame may be secured.
Preferably the inset window frame includes means attaching the main frame member of the inner frame to the flange of the outer frame. The securing means may be screws which pass through the flange into the main frame member of the inner frame and are hidden by the keep frame member.
It is also preferred that the screws removably holding the keep frame member of the inner frame in position attach the keep frame member to the flange of the outer frame. The screws removably holding the keep frame member in position may pass through the flange into the main frame member of the inner frame.
The invention also provides a door having an inset window frame as described above, the outer frame being fixed to the construction of the door.
The door may be of honeycomb construction and have a skin on each face bonded to the outer frame of the inset window frame. One or lboth said skins may have a decorative covering, e.g. a sheet of melamine, attached thereto.
Preferably the free edge of each skin and any decorative covering adjacent the window aperture is overlapped and thus hidden by the inner frame of the inset window frame.
It is also preferred that the window aperture is double-glazed.
By way of example, a specific embodiment in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : - Figure 1 shows a door having an inset window frame; Figure 2 is a section along line 2-2 in Figure 1 and; Figure 3 is a section along line 3-3 in Figure 1.
This example is concerned with sliding doors for railway carriages. Such doors may be external doors or internal doors but in each case the door is provided with an inset window frame. The invention is thus applicable to any door having an inset window frame and is not restricted either to doors for railway carriages or to sliding doors.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a door 10 of honeycomb construction having an outer skin 11 formed by an aluminium sheet and an inner skin 12 also formed by an aluminium sheet, if desired, each skin 11, 12, or in the case of an ex- ternal door the inner skin 12, may be covered with a decorative material, for example a sheet of melamine.
The door 10 has an inset window frame 13 comprising an outer frame 14 bonded to the outer and inner skins 11, 12 and defining a window aperture 15. The outer frame 14 is of U-section having the legs 16 of the U to which the skins 11, 12 are bonded projecting outwardly of the window aperture 15 and has a flange 17 aligned with the leg 16 which is bonded to the inner skin 12 projecting inwardly of the window aper ture. The free edges of each skin 11, 12 adjacent the window aperture are level with the respective internal edge of the outer frame.
Mounted within the outer frame 14 is an inner frame 18 comprising main frame member 19 adjacent the outer surface of the door and keep frame member 20 adjacent the inner surface of the door. The two frame members 19,20 of the inner frame 18 define an inwardly projecting groove 21 for reception of a window pane 22 which may be single-glazed or, as in this embodiment, double-glazed, and also an outwardly projecting groove having legs 23 which overlap the above-mentioned free edges of the door skins 11, 12. The flange 17 of the outer frame is interposed between the frame members 19, 20 of the inner frame whereby at least the main frame member 19 of the inner frame and, in this embodiment, both frame members 19, 20 may be secured thereto. The inner frame is thereby secured within the outer frame.
In this embodiment, the main frame member 19 of the inner frame 18 is secured to the flange 17 by screws 24, and the keep frame member 20 is separately secured in position by screws 25 which pass through clearance hbles in the flange 17 into the main frame member 19. This arrangement ensures that the screws 24 are hidden by the keep frame member 20 and both frame members 19, 20 are held in firm, overlapping engagement with the skins 11, 12 respectively or any decorative material thereon.
In a modified embodiment the keep frame member 20 is screwed to the flange 17 ,direct instead of to the main frame member 19, but such an arrangement means that more screws 24, 25 must be provided to effect the same firm engagement of the frame members against the skins 11, 12 or any decorative material thereon.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. An inset window frame for a door comprising an outer frame for fixture to the construction of the door and defining a window aperture, and an inner frame for retaining at least one glass pane within the window aperture, the inner frame comprising a main frame member and a keep frame member removably held in position by screws, and the outer frame having a flange projecting inwardly of the window aperture and interposed between the main frame member and the keep frame member of the inner frame to which flange at least the main frame member of the inner frame may be secured.
2. An inset window frame as claimed in Claim 1, including securing means attach- ing the main frame member of the inner frame to the flange of the outer frame.
3. An inset window frame as claimed in claim 2, wherein the securing means are screws which pass through the flange into the main frame member of the inner frame and are hidden by the keep frame member.
4. An inset window frame as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the screws removably holding the keep frame member of the inner frame in position attach the keep frame member to the flange of the outer frame.
5. An inset window frame as claimed in claim 4, wherein the screws removably holding the keep frame member in position pass through the flange into the main frame member of the inner frame.
6. A door having an inset window frame as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, the outer frame being fixed to the construction of the door.
7. A door as claimed in claim 6, wherein the door is of honeycomb construction and has a skin on each face bonded to the outer frame of the inset window frame.
8. A door as claimed in claim 7, wherein one or both said skins has a decorative covering attached thereto.
9. A door as claimed in claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the free edge of each skin and any decorative covering adjacent the window aperture is overlapped and thus hidden by the inner frame of the inset window frame.
10. A door as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 9, wherein the window aperture is double-glazed.
11. An inset window frame substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
12. A door substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
