Abstract
A card security system comprises a card reader means, a card which includes an identification code capable of being read by said card reader means, and a module which includes a receiver means operably connected to a transmitter means. The transmitter means transmits a coded signal when the receiver means receives a suitable coded signal. In operation when the card is read by the card reader means, the card reader means transmits a coded signal to the receiver of the module. The module then transmits a coded identification signal to the card reader means which compares the coded identification signal with the identification code of the card to indicate whether the identification code and the coded identification signal correlate. The system may then allow a credit card transaction to be carried out depending on whether the code and signal correlate.
Description
CREDIT CARDS AND BANK CARDS
This invention relates to credit cards and bank cards.
Credit cards and bank cards such as direct debit "switch" cards, cheque guarantee cards, security access cards, smart cards and the like which will hereinafter be referred to as cards for the purpose of this specification are often stolen or lost. This can cost the user of the card and the bank which issued the card a lot of money due to fraud and theft.
The object of the present invention is to provide a card security system to help alleviate the above mentioned problem.
Thus according to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a card security system comprising:
a card incorporating transmitter means, arranged to transmit a signal up to a limited range, receiver means adapted to receive the signal transmitted by the transmitter means of the card, and
an alarm means operably connected to the receiver means,
the arrangement being such that if the receiver means does not receive a signal from the transmitter means after a certain time the alarm may be activated.
In use the rightful user of the card will usually, carry the receiver means on his person. If the card is stolen and removed out of range of the receiver means the alarm will activate and indicate to the user that his card is lost or stolen.
The user may then immediately inform the bank which issued his card of his loss and this immediate notification of loss can save the bank a lot of money.
In a preferred embodiment the signal is a coded signal which is transmitted periodically.
Transmitting the signal periodically, for example once every few minutes will conserve the power of the battery or the like powering the transmitter. Coding the signal may prevent the alarm being suppressed by random transmissions from similar devices or other sources of transmissions.
The signal may be a radio, ultrasonic or infra-red signal. A radio signal is preferred as radio signals can pass easily through clothing and most other objects.
In a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a card security system comprising a card reader means; a card including an identification code capable of being read by said card reader means; and a module including receiver means operably connected to a transmitter means, the transmitter means, being arranged to transmit a coded signal when the receiver means receives a suitable coded signal,
the arrangement being such that when the card is read by the card reader means, the card reader means transmits a signal to the receiver means which receiver means then transmits a coded identification signal to the card reader which is arranged to compare the coded identification signal with the identification code and indicate whether the code and signal correlate.
In a preferred embodiment the card reader incorporates alarm means which are activated if the identification code does not correlate with the identification code on the card or if no identification code signal is received by the card reader.
The card may include two identification codes one of which is incorporated in the signal sent to the module, to activate the module.
A system may be provided which incorporates both first and second aspects of the present invention.
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only.
A credit card security system includes a credit card, a module and a card reader.
The credit card incorporates a low power radio transmitter arranged to transmit periodically a low power coded radio signal and first and second identification codes and data such as authorised user account number, carried on magnetic strips. The second identification code carries information such as the user account number.
The module is adapted to be carried by the authorised user of the card and incorporates a radio receiver operably connected to an audible alarm arranged to be activated if no signal is received by the radio receiver and a radio transmitter.
The card reader incorporates an alarm, a radio receiver and a radio transmitter. It is capable of reading the two identification codes carried by the magnetic stripes on the card.
In use the authorised user of the card carries both the module and the credit card separately on his/her person. If the credit card is stolen the alarm is activated when the transmitter on the card moves out of range of the receiver in the module. This warns the user that their card has been stolen.
Further, when the authorised user or anyone else attempts to make a purchase with the credit card the credit card reader is used to read the codes on the card. On reading the codes the reader transmits the second identification code to the receiver in the module which in turn on receipt of this coded signal is arranged to transmit an authorisation code back to the card reader. The card reader then reads the authorisation code compares it with the first identification code and if no authorisation code is received or if the first identification code and authorisation code do not match the alarm is activated.
This system provides a secure method of preventing unauthorised use of credit cards. Lost or stolen cards would be useless to anyone who did not also have the module.
The system could be extended to direct debit cards, security access cards, cheque cards and the like.
Claims (7)

a card reader means;
a card including an identification code capable of
being read by said card reader means;
and a module including a receiver means operably
connected to a transmitter means, the transmitter
means being arranged to transmit a coded signal
when the receiver means receives a suitable coded
signal, the arrangement being such that when the card is read by the card reader means, the card reader means transmites a coded signal to the receiver means of the module which module then transmites a coded identification signal to the card reader means which is arranged to compare the coded identification signal with the identification code of the card and to indicate whether the identification code and the coded identification signal correlate.
2. A card security system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the card reader means incorporates alarm means which are activated if the coded identification signal does not correlate with the identification code of the card or if no coded identification signal is received by the card reader means.
3. A system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the card includes two identification codes, one of which is incorporated in the signal sent to the module to activate the module.
4. A system as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the card incorporates a further transmitter means which are arranged to transmit a signal up to a limited range and wherein the module includes an alarm operably connected to the receiver means of the module, the arrangement being such that the receiver means does not receive the signal from the transmitter means after a certain time the alarm of the module may be activated.
5. A system as claimed in claim 4 wherein the signal is a coded signal which is transmitted periodically.
6. A system as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6 wherein the coded signal is a radio signal, ultrasonic signal or infra-red signal.
7. A system substantially are hereinbefore described.
