Abstract

Pigments; distempers.-Pigments are rendered suitable for use with oil or water by first treating them with an emulsion containing a colloid, such as gelatine or casein, water, drying-oil, formalin, ethyl or methyl alcohol, to form a formo-gelatinous coating on the particles, washing, drying and powdering, and secondly kneading the product thus obtained with an emulsion of a colloid such as gelatine or casein, or both, water, drying-oil, and ethyl or methyl alcohol. The final product is dried and powdered. The product of the first step may also be used with oil or gelatine water to form a paint. Glue or isinglass may be used instead of gelatine, and as drying-oils, wood oil, poppy-seed oil, linseed oil, perilla oil or boiled oil may be used with or without shellac varnish, Canada balsam, cocoa. oil, vaseline or castor oil, to adjust the viscosity. The oils may be used in gasoline or turpentine solution. Mineral pigments such as ultramarine, verdigris, vermilion, flowers of zinc, white lead, whiting, animal pigments such as cochineal or bone black, or vegetable pigments such as shikon may be treated by the process.
