Abstract

To provide a secure pipe joint for high pressures when using split flanges 8, 18 for embracing respective pipe ends, corresponding flange halves are interconnected across the joint by means of bolts 10, and the two halves of each split flange are joined together by means of two connection plates 12, 14 each gripping two of said bolts. <IMAGE>

Description

Pipe joint The present invention relates to a pipe joint comprising at
least one split flange with two halves which together embrace a respective pipe end, each flange half being clamped across the joint by means of bolts. The bolts interact with nuts when two pipes are joined together, or with threaded bores when a pipe is joined to a fixed connection, such as a pump.
Flanges in one piece are secure but often difficult to mount. Flanges split in two semicircular halves are easier to mount but less secure than flanges in one piece. For example, when joining two pipes, a split f lange can be used on one side only of the joint, and even then there remains a risk that the halves of the split f langes lose their grip around the pipe end due to lateral forces which gradually tend to bend the clamping bolts. The situation is the same when a pipe is joined to a fixed connection, such as a pump.
Because of this risk, one-piece clamping flanges have been considered necessary for high pressure joints.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a pipe joint, with split flanges which can at least partially alleviate the problem of the prior art.
The pipe joint of the invention is mainly characterised in that the two halves of each split flange are joined together by means of at least one connection plate gripping two of said bolts on the outside of the two halves of the split flange.
A preferred embodiment of the invention for joining two pipe ends comprises two split flanges each having two halves together embracing a respective pipe end, corresponding halves being joined together across the joint by means of clamping bolts interacting with nuts. The two halves of each - 2 split flange are joined together by means of two connection plates each gripping two of said bolts on the outside of said two halves of each split flange.
The connection plates eliminate the risk of the split flanges losing their grip. As the connection plates are on the outside of the flange halves, existing standard flanges can be used in connection with the invention. The connection plates are preferably provided with tongues arranged to be bent over the bolt heads and the nuts, respectively. These bent tongues prevent the loosening of the clamping bolts and nuts under the influence of vibration.
In order to facilitate initial positioning of the nuts, annular tapes with an adhesive on both sides may be used. The tapes are placed around the bolt apertures of the connection plates so as to keep the nuts temporarily in place, which facilitates the installation of the pipe joint.
In addition to securing the pipe joint, the connection plates facilitate the installation of the joint. One connection plate may be pre-mounted to keep the flange halves together while the bolts act as hinges.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ends which the flanges are arranged to embrace are formed by weld nipples welded to the respective pipe so that the weld joints have a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the flanges. In this embodiment, the inner diameter of the weld nipples is substantially the same as the inner diameter of the pipes so that the wall thickness of the weld nipples need not be overdimensioned.
In the following, the invention will be descri.bed in greater detail with reference to two exemplifying embodiments shown in the attached drawing.
Figures 1 and 3 are partial sectional side views of two embodiments of the invention.
Figures 2 and 4 are end views of the two 1:
embodiments, respectively.
In Figure 1, the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate two pipes to be joined together. The ends of the pipes 1 and 2 are inserted in and welded to sockets of two weld nipples 3 and 4, which are bent inwards so that nipple portions 5 to be positioned against each other are substantially in level with the pipes 1 and 2. The abutting ends of the nipples 3 and 4 are provided with conventional shoulders 6 and 7 against which f lange halves 8, 18 and 9, 19 of two split flanges, respectively, are arranged to be positioned. The flange halves 8, 9 and 18, 19 are interconnected by means of bolt joints 10, 11 in a manner known per se.
To ensure that the flange halves will not lose their grip around the shoulders 6 and 7 of the nipples 3 and 4, and to facilitate the installation of the pipe joint, the flange halves are joined together by means of connection plates 12, 14 and 13, 15 respectively, on the outside of the two halves 8, 18 and 9, 19 of each split flange. The connection plates are provided with apertures through which the bolts 10 can be passed. The plates 12 to 15 need not usually be thicker than about 1 mm. The connection plates are preferably provided with tongues (not shown) projecting from the edges. These tongues can be bent over the bolt head or nut to prevent them from loosening due to vibration.
The flange halves 8, 18 and/or 9, 19, respectively, may be interconnected in advance at one end, for example, by means of the plate 14, which facilitates the installation of the joint. In order to further facilitate the installation, annular tapes with an adhesive on both sides can be olaced in advance around the apertures provided in the connection plates 12 to 15 for the bolts 10, whereby the 1 1 4 nuts 11 can be pre-mounted temporarily in place.
The embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 is similar to the above-described embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, except that the ends of the pipes 20 and 21 in Figures 3 and 4 are collared as well as the abutting ends of the weld nipples 22 and 23, so that the weld joint 24 is preferably of the type described in greater detail in the international patent application F1 87/00099.
The two embodiments shown in the drawings are advantageous in saving material, and they provide pipe joints with substantially smooth inner surface. In Figure 1, a seal is provided between the end surf ace of the pipe 1 and the narrower portion 5 of the weld nipple 3. The seal prevents the entry of impurities between the socket portion of the nipple 3 and the outer surf ace of the pipe 1, while it also reduces the radial outward force acting on the socket portion of the nipple 3.
