Abstract

An impact nail extractor is provided with a device such as a collet chuck with contracting jaws (9), which grip the head of nail or pin. The collet chuck jaws are anchored to one end of a shaft (4), which has a buffer stop (2) at the other end. A sliding weight (1) slides freely along the length of the shaft until it strikes either the buffer stop (2) in one direction or the collar (5) in the other direction. The force of the weight (1) striking the stop (2) releases kinetic energy which is transmitted back along the shaft (4) to the jaws (9) to pull upon the nail head. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPACT NAIL EXTRACTOR DESCRIPTION An impact tool for withdrawing nails or pins.
Coo methods of removing nails or pins with tools suc as a nail bar, claw ilammer or pincers cause bending and deformation of the nail. Damage is also caused to the material in which the nail is secured.
An impact nail extractor comprises of a siide hammer wni has a device to grip tne nead of a nail or pin.
This tool will remove nails or pins without causing bending or damage and causing tne minimuln damage to material which the nail secures.
rigure I illustrates a cross section througn the tool Figure 2 shows collets open ready to accept nail nead Figure 3 shows collets closed to grip nail head KEY 10 FIGURE 1 1) Sliding weight 2) Buffer stop 3) Handle 4) Main shaft 5) Retaining collar (secured to shaft with pin) oj Retaining collar (secured to shaft with pin) 7) Ferrule to close collets (free to rotate on shaft) 8) Collet retaining and retracting collar (threaded on shaft) 9) Collets (free to expand and close) 1 Screw retainer for Collet spreading washer 11) Collet spreading wasner 12) pin OPERATION The tool is held by the ferrule 7. in one hand whiist rotating the handle 3. with the other hand to cause tne collets 9. to protrude beyona tne Ferrule. and expand to a point where they can accept tne nead or tne nail wnicn is to be extractes.(refer to fig 2).
Tne tool is tnen placed witn the collets 9. over the head of the nail and pressure is applied to ensure that tne collets can bite under the head.(refer to Fig 2). The sliding weight 1. is then gently slid along the shaft 4. to strike collar 5. This produces an impact which is transmitted through to the collets 9. causing them to Dicta further under tne head of the nail.
She collets 9. can then be retracted and closed onto the nail immediately below the head by rotating the handle b.
whilst holding Ferrule 7. By repeating the acton of sliding the weiglt to gently strike tne collar 5. will assist the collets to close completely over the nail head.(refer to fig 3) The tool is now correctly in place and extraction of tna nail can commence. Whilst lightly supporting the tool with the handle, the sliding weight is sharply slid along the shaft repeatedly in tne opposite direction to the previous operation to strike the buffer 2. This produces a sharp impact which again is trallsmltted through to the collets which in turn pull on the nail head. Eac impact withdraws the nail a small amount and is repeated several tines until tne nail is tree.
