Abstract
A substrate possessing superlative qualities in use as an artists canvas comprises one or more layers of linen fabric impregnated with a suspension comprising glass flakes and metallic particles which, as it dries, causes the glass flakes and metallic particles to leaf and bind together to form a durable moisture-proof barrier. <IMAGE>
Description
INPROVEKENTS IN OR RELATING TO FABRIC SUBSTRATES
This invention generally concerns improvements in or relating to fabric substrates and more particularly, though not exclusively, concerns fabric substrates useful as artists canvasses.
The invention stems from a search for a durable and stable substrate for the future application of an oil painting compound which would be firm enough to work on and take the weight of plural paint layers.
Cotton, jute and man-made fibre fabrics conventionally treated with size etc. were tried but were found to be generally unsatisfactory and experiments with linen fabrics were then conducted. The linen based substrates were found to be more meritorious than those previously tested, but with conventional surface treatments were found lacking in regard to their ability to withstand transportation while rolled up.
The rolled up linen substrate would not keep its shape and the oil painting thereon suffered deterioration with flaking and cracking, particularly under damp conditions.
According to the present invention a fabric substrate which is believed to meet the objects outlined hereinbefore is obtained by use of a linen fabric impregnated with Finnigan's Hammerite produced by Hunting Lubricants and Specialised Products Ltd. of
Leeds, England. The precise composition of Finnigan's
Hammerite is not known to the present Applicant, but it is believed to contain heat-hardened glass flakes in suspension with metallic particles. The impregnation of the linen may be effected by spraying or by machine or hand painting, and as the impregnant dries and hardens the millions of glass flakes and metallic particles leaf and bind together to form a durable moisture-proof barrier which has flexibility and presents an attractive surface finish which provides a good medium for the application of artists paints.
Advantageously the thus impregnated linen substrate fabric is further treated with a mixture comprising boiled linseed oil, liquid paraffin (BP) and Windsor & Newton retouching varnish, for example in equal proportions. As thus further treated, the substrate is suitable to be worked upon as with any conventionally prepared painting canvass and can give beautiful results, for example in portraiture and where fine detail is required, with pigments applied in fine layers.
A linen fabric, for example of bedsheet quality, impregnated as above described and further treated with a mixture of linseed oil, liquid paraffin and retouching varnish has been experimentally used as a painting canvass and has been found to have exceptional qualities, particularly as regards its presentation to the artist of an attractive and easily worked 'paint receiving surface and as regards its durability under rolled up transportation conditions.
The invention is not limited to the use of
Finnigan's Hammerite but could use similar glass/metal paint suspensions such as Finnigan's Smoothrite.
Furthermore, whilst the application of the invention to artists canvasses is perhaps the principal application of the invention, it is envisaged that the impregnated linen fabric substrate of the present invention might alternatively be used as a clothing or constructional fabric or as a substrate for electronic circuitry, possibly in a multi-layered configuration.
The possibility also exists that a linen fabric impregnated with Finnigan's Exterior Hardwood Finish or Exterior Wood Finish might be useful, inter alia as an artists canvass, in single or multi-layer configurations.
Claims (7)
1. A substrate comprising a linen fabric impregnated with glass flakes in a suspension which as it dries and hardens causes the glass flakes to leaf and bind together to form a durable moisture-proof barrier.
2. A substrate as claimed in claim wherein 1 the impregnant further comprises metallic particles which bind with the glass flakes as the suspension dries and hardens.
3. A substrate as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein said glass flakes are heat hardened.
4. A substrate as claimed in any of the preceding claims which comprises plural layers of impregnated fabric.
5. A substrate as claimed in any of the preceding claims having a surface treatment for rendering the substrate suitable for use as an artists canvass.
6. A substrate as claimed in claim 5 wherein said surface treatment comprises boiled linseed oil, liquid paraffin and varnish.
7. The use of a substrate as claimed in any of the preceding claims as an artists canvass.
