Abstract

A facing for a wall end opening comprises first (11) and second (12) longitudinally extending strip members each formed with a wall face engageable part (11a, 12a) and a wall end engageable part (11b, 12b) the wall end engageable part (11b) of the first strip (11) including a stop protrusion portion (11c) formed integrally herewith and having a slot (11d) formed therein to accommodate a variable portion of the wall end engageable part (12b) of the second strip (12) whereby the depth of the facing can be varied, in use. The strips are made of extruded synthetic plastics and have protrusions which facilitate attachment of architrave. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVED BUILDING PRODUCT The invention relates to building products and more particularly to facing strips for use around wall edges or openings.
In the manufacture of mobile or prefabricated homes it is becoming standard practise to provide edge facings for wall ends and at window and door frames.
Such facings are usually provided as strips extruded of synthetic plastics material and may include stop sections for windows or doors, integrally formed as part of such strip. Although such strips can be manufactured at a relatively cheap unit price, the moulds are extremely expensive. When it is required to provide and stock a number of various depth facings to fit various wall thicknesses the storage space and mould costs can become prohibitive.
It is an object of the invention to obviate or mitigate the above disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided a facing for a wall end opening which comprises first and second longitudinally extending strip members each formed with a wall face engageable part and a wall end engageable part, the wall end engageable part of the first strip including a stop protrusion portion formed integrally therewith and having a slot formed therein to accommodate a variable portion of the wall end engageable part of the se#cond strip whereby the depth of the facing can be varied, in use.
The first and second strips may each be extruded of synthetic plastics material with each of the wall face and end engageable parts being of small thickness relative to the depths thereof and the stop protrusion portion being of hollow rectangular transverse crosssection.
The stop protrusion portion may be formed such that said slot has faces engageable with opposed faces of the end of the wall end engageable part of the second strip which is remote from the wall face engageable part thereof.
The wall face engageable parts of each strip may have one or more protrusions formed on the outer surface thereof to facilitate attachment of architrave or casing members thereto.
The foregoing and further features of the invention may be more readily understood from the following description of two preferred embodiments thereof, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a wall end with facing attached thereto, and Figure 2 is view similar to Figure 1 of an alternative embodiment of facing.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawing there is shown a transverse sectional view of the end of a wall 10 having a facing comprising first and second strips 11 and 12 attached thereto. Each of the strips 11 and 12 include a wall face engaging part lia and 12a respectively and a wall end engaging part lib and 12b respectively. A stop portion llc, which is of hollow rectangular cross-section is formed integrally with part lib of strip 11. A slot lId is formed in stop portion llc so as to allow passage of the end portion 12c of part 12b of strip 12 to locate within stop portion llc. The outer surfaces of parts Ila and 12b are each formed with respective protrusions llx and 12x to facilitate the snap-on attachment of respective architrave or casing members 13 thereto.
In use a suitable length of strip 11 is attached to one fact of wall 10 by stapling or otherwise fixing through part lla. A similar length of strip 12 is then located with its edge 12c through slot lld until part 12a abuts the other face of wall 10 and part 12a is then stapled or otherwise fixed to wall 10. This sequence can be repeated around a door opening with the corners being mitred and a door can then be hung in standard manner and architrave or casing members 13 attached thereto.
By having edge 12c engaging within slot lid a facing can be produced which will locate on for example, a nominal three or four inch wall thickness but can be of variable depth by about 5/8 inches so as to accommodate different thicknesses of wall sheet finishes of each face of wall 10.
Figure 2 shows a similar arrangement to that of Figure 1 except that slot lid is formed between two wall members lie of stop portion lic to engage opposed surfaces of edge 12c when located therein. Such an arrangement provides a more positive location of edge 12c and is more conveniently manufactured when the strips 11 and 12 are extruded of synthetic plastics material.

CLAIMS:
1. A facing for a wall end opening which comprises first and second longitudinally extending strip members each formed with a wall face engageable part an a wall end engageable part, the wall end engageable part of the first strip including a stop protrusion portion formed integrally therewith and having a slot formed therein to accommodate a variable portion of the wall end engageable part of the second strip whereby the depth of the facing can be varied, in use.
2. A facing as claimed in claim 1 wherein the first and second strips are each extruded of synthetic plastics material with each of the wall face and end engageable parts being of small thickness relative to the depths thereof and the stop protrusion portion being of hollow rectangular transverse cross-section.
3. A facing as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the stop protrusion is formed such that said slot has faces engageable with opposed faces of the end of the wall end engageable part of the second strip which is remote from the wall face engageable part thereof.
4. A facing as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the wall face engageable parts of each strip have one or more protrusions formed on the outer surface thereof to facilitate attachment of architrave or casing members thereto.
5. A facing for a wall end opening substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig 1 of the accompanying drawing.
