Abstract
A cash transfer tube comprises an extensible telescopic tube 1 mounted on a revolving turret 2 with means for transfering cash through the tube. The tube is attached to an armoured security van and use by a guard within the sealed van. The tube is extended e.g. to an upper window of a bank, by air pressure. Cash can be moved along the tube by a cable 19 or by air pressure. <IMAGE>
Description
MOBILE CASH TRANSFER TUBE
This invention relates to a mobile cash transfer tube.
It is common for cash to be transferred from banks to shops and vica versa by way of armoured vans plus guards carrying sacks of cash. While the cash is in the vans it is relatively safe, but during the last few metres on foot, the guards are very vulnerable to the actions of robbers. Furthermore, the general public can get involved in this type of robbery, to their cost. Consequently, the exposed transfer of cash between van and bank or shop needs to be eliminated.
According to the present invention there is provided a mobile cash transfer tube comprising a telescopic tube mounted on a revolving turret on top of the armoured van. From inside the closed van, a guard may extend the tube to enter an upper window or hatch in a bank or shop above street level out of reach of robbers. The bank or shop employee may then pass cash sacks down or up the tube by way of a cable running through the tube. At all times the cash is enclosed and out of reach of robbers by virtue of the height of the transfer tube above street level. The revolving turret on top of the van may be pointed in any direction towards the required upper window or hatch. The telescopic tube is extended for use by means of air pressure, from a gas cylinder or air pump, by keeping both ends sealed with caps during the extension period. After use the tube is collapsed by pulling the cable tight from inside the van; then the turret rotated to the tube-park position before the van moves awav.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1. shows a side view of the mobile cash transfer tube mounted on an armoured van roof.
Figure 2. shows a front view of the mobile cash transfer tube.
Figure 3. shows a side-elevation cross-section of the mobile cash transfer tube,
drawn out of scale to emphasise certain features.
Referring to Figures 1-3, the mobile cash transfer tube comprises a telescopic tube assembly (1) mounted on a rotational turret (2) by way of a universal joint (10).
The tube ends may be blocked with caps (4) and (7) fited with hinges (5) and (8) plus catches (6) and (9) respectively, so that air may be pumped in from a cylinder or pump (16) in order to extend the tube full length. In order to project the telescopic tube through the bank or shop upper hatch, the guard inside the van may view the hatch through the plate glass windows (17) while cranking the tube altitude handle (14) and turret azimuth handle (12). A cable (19) attached to the inside of end-plate (4) passes down the tube and through cap (7) to a winder spool (18). The cable has to be held taught and released slowly through (7) as the tube (1) is extended under air pressure. After the tube has been extended into the upper hatch the air pressure is exhausted so that end cap (4) may be swung back by an occupier in the upper room.Similarly, the van guard may swing back the lower cap (7) and free the winding spool (18). Cash sacks in the van may then be clipped to the free cable (19) and hauled up the tube (1) to the upper room by the occupant there. Alternatively, sufficient free cable may first be pulled up to the upper room, then cash sacks clipped to the cable for the guard to pull them down. The cranks (12), (14) and (18) may be motorised, but manual cranks are more reliable and therefore preferable in view of the inherent dangers if failure occurred during cash transfer. The turret is mounted on ball bearings (11) running in a shielded raceway (13) to keep out any obnoxious gases. Similarly, the universal ball joint (10) is proof against gases. The end cap (4) may be held shut by the cable (19), wound tight on the spool (18) prior to cash transfer, in order to keep out gases or smoke bombs. Before van movement the telescopic tube (1) is contracted by pulling cable (19) tight and parked on support (3). In this embodiment example the tube could be wide enough to take up to 30cm diameter cash sacks, and long enough to span 5 metres from van to upper hatch in the bank or shop.
Claims (7)
1. A mobile cash transfer tube comprising an extensible telescopic tube mounted on a revolving turret with means for transfering cash through the tube, for attachment to an armoured security van and use by a guard within the sealed van.
2. A mobile cash transfer tube as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the telescopic tube may be extended by air pressure from a pump or gas bottle, or alternatively by a pulley arrangement or gear drive.
3. A mobile cash transfer tube as claimed in Claims 1 or 2 wherein the telescopic tube is mounted on an air-tight universal joint to allow pointing in various directions.
4. A mobile cash transfer tube as claimed in any previous Claim wherein an air-tight turret mounting allows the tube to be turned to any azimuth position including the parked position.
5. A mobile cash transfer tube as claimed in any previous Claim wherein the cash sacks may be clipped to a cable passing through the tube for transfer in either direction by manual or motorised power.
6. A mobile cash transfer tube as claimed in any previous Claim wherein cash sacks may be transferred through the telescopic tube by air pressure or other means.
7. A mobile cash transfer tube substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawing.
