Abstract

A resistance colour code device to determine an ohmic value of a resister or to determine a colour code for a particular ohmic value comprises a cylindrical core (10) having a mark (12) on its periphery. A series of four bands (14, 16, 18. 20) are rotatable thereon. Each of the bands (14, 16, 18, 20) has a series of four sections (22) representing different colour codes and values thereon whereby each band can in turn be rotated on the core (10) for particular sections (22) to be brought into alignment with the mark (12). <IMAGE>

Description

RESISTANCE COLOUR CODE DEVICE.
This invention relates to an electrical resistance colour code device. Carbon and metal oxide resistors normally have their ohmic value printed on the body of the resistor. This takes the form of. a colour code in four coloured bands.
A problem exists in that colour codes can only be encoded or deciphered by use of a table of colours and values.
An object of the present invention is to provide a portahle and handy device, suitable to he placed in for example a coat or jacket pocket, to enable the value of a resistor to be determined fron a colour coding provided thereon.
Accordingly, the present invention is a resistance colour code device to determine an ohric value of a resistor or to determine a colour code for a particular ohmic value, te device comprising a cylindrical core having a slark on its periphery, and a series of four bands rotatable thereon, each of the bands having a series of sections representing different colour codes and values thereon whereby each band can in turn be rotated on the core for particular sections to he brought into alignment with the mark.
Preferably, the first band nearest the mark represents in its series of sections different values and colours of a first digit of the ohmic value. The second hand in sequence preferable represents in its series of sections different values and colours of a second digit of the ohmic value. The third band in sequence preferahle represents in its series of sections different values and colours of a multiplier of the comic value. The fourth band in sequence preferable represents in its series of sections different values and colours of a tolerance of the ohmic value.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawling which shows a perspective view of a resistance colour code device.
A resistance colour cod device is to determine an ohmic value of a resistor or to determine a colour code for a particular ohmic value.
Referring to the drawing, the device comprises a cylindrical core 10 having a mark 12 on its periphery.
The core 10 is tubular as shown but may he solid if desired. The mark 12 is shown as a line but this may be any other suitable mark such as a dot or an arrow at one end.
A series of four bands 14, 1 G, 18, 20 are rotatable around the core 10. Each of the bands has a series of sections 22 representing different colour codes and values thereon.
The first band 14 nearest the mark 12 represents in its series of sections 22 different values and colours of a first digit of the ohmic value.
The second hand 16 in sequence represents in its series of sections 22 different values and colours of a second digit of the ohmic value.
The third hand 1n in sequence represents in its series of sections 22 different values and colours of a multiplier of the ohmic value.
The fourth band 20 in sequence represents in its series of sections 22 different values and colours of a tolerance of the ohmic value.
In use, each band can in turn he rotated on the core 10 for particular sections tb be brought into alignment with the mark 12 to give either a determined colour code combination such that the values printed on the sections can he discovered or a determined value combination such that the colour code can be discovered.
The tahle of colour code values is known and is tabulated below.
Colour lst/2nd Multiplier Tolerance digit Black 0 1 Brown 1 10 1 Red 2 10+ 2 Orange 3 103 3 Yellow 4 10+ 4 Green 5 10S - Blue 6 10b Violet 7 1 no - Grey 8 lot White 9 10 Gold - 10- 5 Silver - 10-t 10 EXAMPLE.
(1) If a resistor was colour coded as Orange-White-Red-Silver then when the bands were brought into alignment with the mark 12 the value of the resistor would read 3.9kohm + 10% (2) If a resistor had a value of lkohm and a tolerance of # 5%, then by using the device and arranging the bands to give such a value aligned with the mark 12, a colour code of Black-Brown-Orange-Gold would be obtained.
Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above.
