Description

Glazing Bar Systems This invention relates to glazing bar systems for use in glazing roofs and other generally sloping parts of buildings.
Glazing bars may be used to span open roof spaces, and are adapted to support sheets of glazing which may be glass or some plastics material such as twin walled polycarbonate carbonate. The latter is advantageous in numerous situations, particularly where the appearance of the glazing is not of paramount importance, but where other factors such as weight and heat insulation are pre-eminent.
FR-A-2468714 discloses an existing standard T-section glazing bar supporting existing glazing and modified by a plastics slot section adapted to fit over the upstanding stem of the T-section glazing bar.
The slot section has legs which hold down the existing glazing. The legs also provide supports for a second layer of insulative glazing which is held in place by a fitting which over-clads the slot section.
However there is no thermal break provided between the inside of the building and the outside.
FR-A-2455158 discloses an aluminium glazing bar adapted to receive a plastics section having several slots cut into its sides. These slots allow attachment of an aluminium section cap having legs adapted to hold down one or more layers of glazing supported on the glazing bar. However, the construction is not mechanically strong, and would not allow long spans of glazing bar to be employed.
Thus it is an object of the present invention to provide a glazing bar which does not suffer from the aforementioned disadvantages, or other disadvantages, or which at least mitigates their effects.
In accordance with the invention disclosed there is provided a glazing bar system comprising a metallic glazing bar formed by an extrusion process to have a substantially T-shaped section, the arms of the Tsection being adapted to support adjacent sheets of glazing and the stem of the T-section being adapted to be upstanding between said adjacent sheets and being provided with catches adapted to cooperate with corresponding catches disposed on an extruded plastics intermediate section, said intermediate section being adapted to locate in a metallic snap-cap section which has legs arranged, when the snap-cap, intermediate section and glazing bar are interengaged with one another and adjacent sheets of glazing are supported by said arms, to bear against the other side of each sheet of glazing to retain same in place on the arms.
Preferably, said snap-cap section is provided with secondary catches adapted to engage with corresponding secondary catches on a secondary extruded plastics snap-cap section which has means to support a secondary layer of insulative glazing.
Preferably said snap-cap section has a generally C-shaped downwardly facing slot whose internal edges are upwardly turned and into which slot said intermediate section can be slid to secure the two parts together, the intermediate section having arms adapted to engage said upwardly turned edges of the C-shaped slot. Preferably the parts are so sectioned that they slide together in only one orientation with respect to one another.
The intermediate section thus acts as a thermal break reducing condensation when there is a significant temperature gradient between the metallic "outside" snap-cap section and "inside" glazing bar Tsection. Preferably the snap-cap and glazing bar are aluminium.
The arms of the glazing bar are preferably thickened at their edges.
The thickened edges may include a rebated upwardly facing slot to receive a seal element provided with a connection flange for connection with the upwardly facing slot and a support surface on which to support sheets of glazing.
Each thickened edge may also include an outwardly facing rebated slot by means of which the glazing bar may be secured at its ends to the supporting structure of the building in which the glazing bars are being fitted. To this end a fixing plate may be provided having inwardly directed flanges adapted to engage the outwardly facing slot in each thickened edge of the glazing bar, means being provided to secure said plate to the supporting structure.
Moreover, an extruded reinforcing metallic section may be provided comprising a base, a central upstanding stem having a support flange at its end, and two upstanding side stems each being provided with an Inwardly facing flange adapted to engage the outwardly facing slot in each thickened edge of the glazing bar, the reinforcing section being so dimensioned that, when engaged wlth the glazing bar, the support flange supports the base of the glazing bar.
Preferably an end section is provided comprising an extruded metallic section having a connection flange adapted to engage said upwardly facing slot in one of the thickened edges of the glazing bar, and a support flange distanced from the connection flange sufficiently to support one leg of the snap-cap, the other leg of which is holding down glazing supported on the other of said thickened edges.
The invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig 1 is a glazing bar in accordance with the present invention is shown partly in section and partly in perspective; Fig 2 is a section through another embodiment of the present invention; and, Fig 3 shows the glazing bar of Fig 2, partly in perspective, connected to a support.
A glazing bar 10 is essentially T-shaped, being extruded from aluminium. The glazing bar 10 has a stem 16 and arms 20,22 on either side of the stem 16. These arms are provided with grooves 24,26 to carry rubber or other elastomer seals 28,30 which form support surfaces for primary glazing sheets 32 of triple walled polycarbonate.
Each sheet 32 of triple walled polycarbonate comprises three walls 34,35,36 separated by spaced ribs 38. The ribs provide rigidity to the sheets and form air gaps between the walls which give the sheets good thermal insulation properties.
On the stem 16 there are formed catches 40 on each side. More than one on each side (as shown) may be provided. These catches are adapted to engage with corresponding catches 48 disposed on the inside of a channel 44 formed on an intermediate section 92. The intermediate member is extruded from plastics material such as UPVC or the like. A snap-cap section 90 is extruded from aluminium and has a generally C-shaped slot 94 into which the intermediate section 92 can be slid to secure the two parts together. To orientate the sections 90,92 correctly with one another they are provided with corresponding flanges 96 and arms 98 adapted to engage one another when the intermediate section 92 is introduced in the slot 94 of the snap-cap 90.
The snap-cap 90 is provided with legs 50,52, which are arranged to engage the top wall 34 of each sheet 32 and resiliently retain the sheets in place. Thus when the snap-cap, with the intermediate section inserted therein, is fitted over the stem 16 of the glazing bar 10, several events occur. Firstly, the channel 44 of the intermediate section deforms until the catches 40 snap into engagement with the catches 48 in the channel. Meanwhile, the legs 50,52 of the snap-cap have engaged the top walls of adjacent sheets 32 of polycarbonate lying on the support surfaces 28,30. This presses the sheets 32 into tight engagement with the seals 28,30. The sheets are thus firmly held in place once the catches 40,48 are interengaged. The sheets 32 will, as primary glazing, be relatively thick and provide good heat insulation in their own right.
The legs 50,52 have seals at their ends, to seal against the glazing sheets 32. However, should any moisture penetrate the seal, it will be captured in drip channels 100 formed between the stem 16 and the thickened ends of the arms 20,22.
Should further heat insulation be felt necessary at any time in the future, a further layer of twin walled polycarbonate can be added with ease. This is because the snap-cap 90 is provided with secondary catches 62 adapted to engage corresponding secondary catches 64 on a secondary snap-cap 66. The secondary snap-cap 66 comprises said catches 64 on legs 68 which conform to the outer shape of the snapcap 90, such that the secondary snap-cap can be engaged with the primary snap-cap 90 with ease. The secondary snap-cap 66 has mutually opposing slots 70 adapted to receive and retain secondary sheets 72 of twin walled polycarbonate. Not only does this provide further insulation in its own right, but more importantly it creates a further insulative air gap 76 between the two sheets 32,72.
Consequently the sheet 72 needs only be thick enough to have sufficient rigidity to retain its shape.
The glazing bar 10 is used to span open spaces in roofs and other sloping parts of buildings. Thus it is provided with slots 80 at either side of the thickened ends of each arm 20,22 and by means of which retainers 110 (see Fig 3) may be engaged to locate the glazing bar in any desired position on a support 112.
The slots 80 also enable a reinforcing section 120 (see Fig 2) to be employed when particularly long spans are required. The reinforcing section 120 is extruded from aluminium and comprises a base 122 having a central stem 124 terminating in a support flange 126. Side stems 128,130 rise from each edge of the base 122 and have inwardly directed lugs adapted to fit in the slots 80. The stems 124,128 and 130 are so dimensioned that the support flange 126 abuts the bottom of the glazing bar 10 and thereby supports it and deters it from bowing over long spans. The reinforcing section is arranged slightly shorter than the full length of the glazing bar 10 to allow sufficient room at the ends of the glazing bar to fit the retainer 110 (see Fig 3).
The intermediate section 92, disposed between the snap-cap section 90 and T-section stem 16, provides a thermal barrier against the cold (outside) snap-cap section 90 and so that the glazing bar T-section can retain heat and stay at the temperature of the inside of the building. This reduces the tendency for condensation to form on the under side of the glazing bar 10.
Fig 2 shows an intermediate section 92' of different dimensions to that shown in Fig 1, so that merely by exchanging the intermediate section, different thicknesses of the primary glazing 32 can be employed, as indicated by glazing 32' in Fig 2.
Fig 1 shows two sheets of glazing 32 supported on either side of the glazing bar 10, but at the ends of the roof space, it is necessary to terminate the glazing. This is effected by providing an end stop 140 (see Fig 2) which takes the place of one seal (eg 30) and locates in the slot 26. The end stop 140 has an upstanding stem 142 terminated in a support flange 144. The stem 142 is dimensioned so that the leg 52 of the snap-cap 90 rests on the flange 144 so as to maintain the balance of forces exerted by the other leg 50 on the last sheet 32' of glazing.
While the invention has been described with reference to specific elements and combinations of elements, it is envisaged that each element may be combined with any other or any combination of other elements. It is not intended to limit the invention to the particular combinations of elements suggested. Furthermore, the foregoing description is not intended to suggest that any element mentioned is indispensable to the invention, or that alternatives may not be employed. What is defined as the invention should not be construed as limiting the extent of the disclosure of this specification.
