Abstract
Spectacles which are worn by a person to correct a sight defect, to reduce glare, as a matter of safety or for other purposes consisting of a frame having two spaced-apart lens carrying portions, a bridge piece for connecting the lens carrying portion and two side arms each respectively pivotally connected to an associated one of the lens carrying portions. The or each side arm, and/or the or each lens carrying portion and/or the bridge piece is or are provided with mounting means for releasably securing attachment pieces, and/or lenses, and/or filters thereto to enable one pair of spectacles to be used for different purposes. <IMAGE>
Description
"Improvements in or relating to spectacles This invention relates to spectacles and more particularly, but not exclusively, to improvements in the frame of spectacles.
Each person who wears spectacles particularly, a person who wears spectacles to correct a defect in their sight, has to wear spectacles in a multiplicity of different conditions and situations such as, for example, at a place of work or at different types of social occasions.
Conventional spectacles having a frame in which lenses are permanently secured suffer from the disadvantage that in order to provide spectacles which are suitable for the various types of conditions and occasions encountered it is either necessary to compromise on the type of spectacle frame or incur the expense of having a number of different types of spectacle frames each fitted with the lenses appropriate to the wearer for correction of any sight defect.
The object of this invention is to provide spectacles in which the above disadvantages of conventional spectacles are alleviated.
According to this invention, spectacles which are worn by a person to correct a sight defect, to reduce glare, as a matter of safety or for other purposes comprise a frame having two spaced-apart lens carrying portions, a bridge piece for connecting the lens carrying portions and two side arms respectively connected to an associated one of the lens carrying portions, wherein the or each side arm, and/or the or each lens carrying portion and/or the bridge piece is or are provided with mounting means for releasably securing attachment pieces1 and/or lenses, and/or filters thereto
Preferably, the attachment pieces are provided in sets of different shapes, colours, or ornamentation to vary the colour, shape, configuration or ornamentation of the spectacles when mounted thereon.
Preferably, also, the lenses are provided in sets of suitable focal length to correct specific sight defects so that when the lenses are mounted on the spectacles, a single spectacle frame can be used for different purposes such as, for example, as reading glasses or for long distance vision.
The filters are, preferably, provided in sets of different colours, intensities, photo-chromatic material or impact resistant material so that when the filters are mounted on the spectacles, a single frame can be used as sun glasses, for the alleviation of a disorder such as dislexia, or as safety glasses.
Preferably, the mounting means on the spectacle frame comprises one or more apertures, recesses or projections in or on which complementary shaped projections, recesses1 or apertures on the attachment pieces, lenses or filters are a press or a snap type of fit.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a frame of a pair of spectacles;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic sectional plan view of part of one side arm of the frame and attachment piece associated therewith showing one type of mounting means therefore; and
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic sectional plan view of part of one side arm of the frame and attachment piece associated therewith showing an alternative type of mounting means therefore.
Referring now to the drawings, a pair of spectacles comprises a frame indicated generally at 10 consisting of two spaced-apart lens carrying portions 12, a bridge piece 14 connecting the lens carrying portions 12 together and two side arms 16. The side arms 16 are respectively connected to an associated one of the lens carrying portions 12 by hinges 18 to enable the arms 16 to fold in conventional manner to facilitate storage in a case (not shown).
Mounting means in the form of apertures or holes 20, shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, are provided in the lens carrying portions 12, the bridge piece 14, and the side arms 16. Complementary shaped projections 22 are provided on attachment pieces 24 which are a press fit in the apertures or holes 20 to enable the attachment pieces to be releasably secured to the frame 10.
An alternative form of mounting means is shown in
Figure 3 of the drawings comprising recesses 26 in the frame 10 and complementary shaped projections 28 on the attachment pieces 24 which are a snap fit in the recesses 26.
Lenses 30 are either permanently mounted in the lens carrying portions 12 of the frame 10 or, alternatively, the lenses 30 are releasably mounted on the portions 12 by utilising one or other of the mounting means hereinbefore described.
Where the lenses 30 are releasably secured to the frame 10, a single spectacle frame 10 can be utilised for different purposes, such as reading glasses or for long distance vision according to the type or prescription of the lenses 30 fitted therein.
The attachment pieces 24 for securing to the lens carrying portions 12, bridge piece 14, and arms 16 are provided in sets of suitable colours, shapes1 or ornamentation to enable a single frame 10 to be varied so as to be suitable for use for different purposes and social occasions. For example, large size attachment pieces 24 can be provided for mounting on the arms 16 to provide shields to inhibit the ingress of particles into the eyes where the spectacles are used as safety glasses or, alternatively, different colours of attachment pieces 24 are provided where for aesthetic reasons this is desirable.
In addition, sets of filters of different colours, intensities, photo-chromatic material, or impact resistant material are provided which are capable of being releasably secured by the amounting means to the lens carrying portions 12 of the frame 10, thereby enabling a single frame 10 to be used as sunglasses, safety glasses, or for the treatment of disorders such as dislexia, where it has been found that the use of coloured filters can be beneficial.
It will be appreciated that spectacles according to this invention in combination with sets of attachment pieces, lenses, and filters allow a single frame to be used in a multiplicity of colours, shapes, configurations and for a variety of purposes according to the users requirements.
Claims (6)
1. Spectacles which are worn by a person to correct a sight defect, to reduce glare, as a matter of safety or for other purposes comprising a frame having two spaced-apart lens carrying port ions1 a bridge piece for connecting the lens carrying portions and two side arms respectively connected to an associated one of the lens carrying portions, wherein the or each side arm, and/or the or each lens carrying portion and/or the bridge piece is or are provided with mounting means for releasably securing attachment pieces, and /or lenses, and/or filters thereto
2. spectacles according to Claim 1, wherein the attachment pieces are provided in sets of different shapes1 colours, or ornamentation to vary the colour, shape, configuration or ornamentation of the spectacles when mounted thereon.
