Abstract

223,491. Crisp, J. R., and Dargan, (nÚe Tilford), O. T. March 17, 1924. Levels. - In an instrument of the pendulum type, the pivoted member is provided with a number of spokes around the extremities of which a graduated band is attached while graduated discs are also attached to the spokes. A brake band is also provided whereby the pivoted member can be locked in position. In the form shown the pendulum is mounted in a bar 10 provided with a frame 11 securing windows 12 through which the readings can be taken. Journaled in the frame 11 is a spindle 13 on which is mounted a hub 14 carrying a number of spokes 15 to one of which is attached the pendulum mass 16. Around the extremities of the spokes is a graduated band 21 which can be observed through an aperture 22 and is secured by screws 24 passing through slotted holes 23 to facilitate circumferential adjustment of the band. Also secured to the spokes by screws passing through slotted holes are graduated discs 17 visible through the windows 12. These discs are preferably graduated so as to show the rise in inches per foot and also angles of inclination. The band 21 is encircled by a brake member 32, the ends of which project outwardly and pass through inclined slots 43, 44, Fig. 12, in a slidable member 40, so that by pulling this member upwardly the ends of the brake member are drawn together. In a modification the discs 17 are formed integrally with the spokes, while in a further modification the discs and the band 21 are formed together in two half cylinders secured to the pendulum.
