WILLIAM F. LUDVJIG, OF GE-IIGAG-G, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNGB 'I'O LUDW'IG & LUDWIG. INC. OF CHICAGO, ILLINC-IS. A CGROEATION 6F ILLINOIS.
COMBINED MUSICAL AND JINGLE.
Application filed March 27, 19:24.
To all 10. mm it may concern.
Be it known that I, WVILLIAH F. LUDWIG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Combined Musical Castanets and Jingles, of which the following is a speciiintion.
This invention relates to a combined casta net and jingle for use as a musical auxiliary in orchestral performances, and has for its object To provide a structural formation and association of parts and elements on a handled carrier head by which various effects of the castanet and jingle instriunentalities can be attained in an effective and ready manner by the proper manipulation of the handled carrier, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1, is an elevation illustrating the preferred duplex arrangement of castanet and jingle elements.
Fig. 2, is an end View of the same.
Fig. 3, is an elevation of a primary form of the instrument. Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
In the present improvement the base or body of the instrui'nent is formed of a slab of Wood or other suitable material, having a cruciform or trefoil configuration. providing an upper central top portion 1 lower and laterally arranged side portions 2 and a, depending central handle 3 for engage ment and proper manipulation by the hand of the player.
In the duplex type of the instrument shown in Figs. 1 and 2, duplicate clapper or castanet pieces t of the usual and customary form are secured side by side by attaching cords 5 to the middle portion of the supporting base or body, and upon opposite sides of the same. The jingle pieces or disks 6 of the usual cupped shape are secured by screws or studs 7 passing centrally through said jingle disks and fixedly con nected to the central part of the upper central portion 1 and to the central parts of the side portions 2, and at opposite sides of said portions as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The attaching studs or screws 7 are Serial No. 702,288.
in slightly offset relation to each other at opposite sides of the slab or base, so as to attain proper attachment thereto with out interference one with the other.
In the simple and primary type of the instrument illustrated in Fig. 3, castanet pieces at are secured in a manner above set forth to opposite sides of the base or slab and upon median lines thereof, and in connection there-with pairs of the jingle disks 6 are secured outside of said centrally arranged castanet pieces. and to the side portions 2 of the supporting base or slab, and at opposite sides thereof.
With the described arrangement of parts, drummer or like perforn'ier is enabled by different movements of the hand grasping the handle 3, to cause either the castanet or the jingle instrumentalities to the full sound producing effect of one or the other; as Well as modified combination of the sound effects of both such instrumentalities.
Having thus fully described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a musical instrument, the combination of a handled base having a cruciform shape, clappers or cast-anet members secured to the central portion of said base and at opposite sides of the same, and jingle members secured to the outer or side portions of said base and at opposite sides thereof.
2. In a musical instrument, the combination of a handled base of a cruciform shape, duplicate clapper or castanet members secured to the middle portion of said base and at opposite sides of the same, and jingle members secured to the outer or side portions of said base and at opposite sides thereof.
3. In a musical instrument, the combination of a handled base having a cruciform shape, clapper or castanet members secured to the central portion of said base and at opposite side of the same, and jingle members secured to the outer or side portions of said base and at opposite sides thereof, the jingle members at the respective sides of the base having offset relation.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 26th day of March, 1924:.
WILLIAM F. LUDWIG.
