Abstract

A hinge system comprises a pair of hinge members 20, 26 pivotable with respect to one another about a common hinge pin 22, one of the members 26 being secured in use to a fixed support and the other movable member 20 being secured to the member 21 being hinged and means 14, 15 and 25 are provided for preventing forced movement of the member 21 away from the hinge in either of two generally perpendicular directions. The means may comprise pins 14 on the movable member 20 engaging holes 25 in one face of the member 21 and screws passing through holes 15 into another face 24 of the member 21. <IMAGE>

Description

Hinge Assembly It is important that a hinge for a door or window should be securely fixed in such a manner that unauthorised entry cannot be obtained by forcing the door or window away from its hinge. The present invention provides an improved fixing arrangement which is particularly secure, simple and effective.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinge system comprising a pair of hinge members pivotable with respect to one another about a common hinge pin, one of the members being secured in use to a fixed support and the other movable member being secured to the member being hinged1 and means preventing forced movement of the secured hinged member away from the hinge in either of two generally perpendicular directions.
In a preferred embodiment, the movable hinge member includes two angled faces which contact corresponding angled faces of the hinged member. Detent means may then prevent forced movement between a first of the pairs of contacting faces in one direction while the second pair of contacting faces are retained against one another, for example by screwing them together, to prevent forced movement in a generally perpendicular direction.
The detent means preferably comprise at least one tooth or pin projecting from the respective face of the hinge member for engaging respective sockets or holes in the corresponding face of the hinged member.
The movable hinge member preferably comprises an elongate bar, one of the longitudinal sides of the bar bering recessed to provide the two angled faces. The two faces are generally at right angles but one of the faces 1iof be chamfered to match a corresponding decorative chamfer along the edge of the hinged member. The chamfer angle may, for example, lie in the region of 150.
A feature of the hinge system is that, once the hinge has been secured to the hinged member, the detent means are concealed and inaccessible. Moreover, by arranging that the angled face which receives the screw threaded securing means is positioned opposite the fixed support when the door or window is closed, the head of the screw threaded securing means is also concealed and inaccessible.
By way of example only, a hinge assembly embodying the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hinge assembly, Fig. 2 is an end view of the movable hinge component in the assembly of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the component shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a side view of the component shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is an end view of the hinge assembly, Fig. 6 is a plan view of the hinge assembly, and Fig. 7 is a side view of the hinge assembly.
Referring to these drawings, the hinge assembly consists of a fixed hinge component 26 and a movable hinge component 20 which is fixed to the flange 21 of an extruded PVC section which has a standard profile for retaining one edge of a door or glazing panel. The movable component 20 consists of a barrel socket 10 having a central bore 19 for receiving an hinge pin 22, and a solid or hollow elongate wing section in the form of a bar 13 extending above and below the barrel socket 10, one of the longitudinal sides of the bar 13 being recessed to provide angled faces 11 and 12 for contacting corresponding faces of the door flange 21. The face 12 is chamfered to match a 150 chamfer on the side face 24 of the flange 21.
A pair of locating pins 14 project from the face 11, and the chamfered face 12 has four screw holes 15. In use, the pins 14 are first located in holes 25 which have been drilled in the surface of the flange 21, and the hinge component 20 is then secured to the flange by screws inserted through the screw holes 15. In this manner the component 20 is secured to the door or window in such a manner that the door or window cannot be forced away from its hinge in either of two mutually perpendicular directions. Moreover, with the door or window closed, the locating pins 14 and the fixing screws are both concealed and inaccessible.
The fixed hinge component 26 consists of two interconnected mounting blocks 17, 18 which locate either side of the central socket 10 of the movable component 20, each block having a bore aligned with the bore 19 of the central socket 10 such that the movable component 20 pivots about the common hinge pin 22 received in the aligned bores. Each of the mounting blocks 17, 18 includes a locating pin 19 for locating the respective blocks in a fixed support member (not shown) bounding the door or window. A flat portion of the component 26 interconnecting the two blocks 17, 18 includes screw holes for screwing the component to the fixed support member.

Claims (6)

1. A hinge system comprising a pair of hinge members pivotable with respect to one another about a common hinge pin, one of the members being secured in use to a fixed support and the other movable member being secured to the member being hinged, and means preventing forced movement of the secured hinged member away from the hinge in either of two generally perpendicular directions.
2. A hinge system according to claim 1 in which the movable hinge member includes two angled faces for contacting corresponding angled faces of the hinged member.
3. A hinge system according to claim 2 further comprising detent means adapted to prevent movement between a first of the pairs of contacting faces in one of the said directions.
4. A hinge system according to claim 3 in which the detent means comprise at least one tooth or pin projecting from the respective face of the hinge member for engaging a pre-formed socket or hole in the corresponding face of the hinged member.
5. A hinge system according to claim 3 or claim 4 in which the other pair of contacting faces are screwed together to prevent forced movement in the other of the said mutually perpendicular directions.
6. A hinge system according to any one of the claims 2-5 in which the movable hinge member comprises an elongate bar, one of the longitudinal sides of the bar being recessed to provide the two angled faces.
