NHL COL/"7 T PHELPS "Qiiww A TTORNE Y5 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It has been found that the public tends to assume that the presence of a clearly visible crack or clearance between the front surface of the cabinet frame and the rear surface of the door hingedly mounted thereon is indicative of a poorly fitted door and-thus low quality furniture construction. Thus, every effort is made by quality furniture manufacturers to minimize the dimensions of such crack.
It is particularly important to minimize the dimension of the crack in cabinet constructions, such as dining-room china closets, since light entering the cabinet through glass inserts of the door or from artificial interior illumination tends to'magnify the appearance of the crack especially when the cabinet frame and door are formed of relatively dark wood.
Attempts to minimize the apparent dimension of the crack have included the use of barrel hinges of the self I seating hinge variety or of the type wherein the hinge mounting plate is fitted only to the front surface of the cabinet frame in order to reduce by half the thickness of hinge metal spacing of the door and cabinet frame; and the use of offset or lip doors, so as to provide a tortuous light passage between the door and cabinet frame.
However, these attempts have either not proven completely effective or have produced an otherwise unacceptable hinge assembly. In this respect, the socalled self seating hinge is structurally inferior to the conventional solid plate barrel hinge, due to the fact that a large area of one of the hinge plates must be cut,
out to permit seating. Further, fixing the mounting plate to the front surface of the cabinet frame, as in many kitchen cabinet constructions, is not acceptable in quality furniture because the heads of the attaching screws are clearly visible.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed towards a novel barrel type hinge construction and mounting arrangement, which serves to minimize crack dimensions between a door and cabinet frame, while overcoming the disadvantages mentioned above.
The barrel hinge of the present invention features a solid hinge plate construction formed to permit attachment thereof to an inner wall surface of a cabinet frame and the rear surface of a cabinet opening closure door. In accordance with the present invention, the rearwardly facing surface of the door, which in door closed position laps over and lies parallel with the forwardly facing surface of the cabinet frame so as to define a crack therebetween, is provided with a mortise dimensioned to snugly receive a surface lapping portion of the door hinge plate.
Further, the portion of the mounting hinge plate, which is abutted against the forwardly facing surface of the cabinet frame, is formed with a vertical dimension slightly less than the vertical dimension of therear surface lapping portion of the door hinge plate, such as to permit the former to be freely receivedwithin the mortise when the door is moved to closed position. The depth of the mortise determines the extent to which the mounting hinge plate portion may be received within the mortise, and thus the dimension of the crack or clearance between the forwardly facing surface of the cabinet frame and the rearwardly facing lapping surface of the door. By this arrangement, the only limitation on the minimum dimension of the crack is that which will prevent finish marring contact between the door and cabinet frame.
Further, the hinge construction of the present invention features a mounting hinge plate having at least one projecting ear in which a fastener receiving aperture is arranged in a predetermined relationship relative to the cabinet frame front surface abutting portion thereof, so
as to positively insure that such abutting portion is positioned in engagement with the forwardly facing surface.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Now referring particularly to FIG. 1, the hinge of the present invention, which is generally designated as 10, is shown as mounting a door 12 on. a cabinet frame including side wall or frame member 14 for pivotal movement about a vertical axis from and into the illustrated cabinet opening closed position. Two or more hinges may be employed as required to support the weight of the door.
For purposes of reference, frame member 14 is shown as being vertically elongated and as having a forwardly facing surface 16 and a cabinet opening bounding inner side surface 18. Further, door 12 is generally shown in the drawings as having front, rear and side edge surfaces 20, 22 and 24, respectively. More specifically, in the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 14, door 12 is shown as being of the offset or lip variety having a rear edge groove, which defines a recessed rearwardly facing surface 26, and recessed side edge surface 28.
When door 12, shown in FIGS. 1-4, is closed surface 26 is arranged in overlying substantially parallel rela-' 14 and whose dimension is to be minimized in accordance with the present invention.
Referring particularly to FIG. 2, hinge is shown as generally including a door hinge plate 32; a mounting hinge plate 34; and a hinge pin 36 journalled within mounting portions, such as curls or knuckles 38 and 40 of hinge plates 32 and 34, respectively.
More specifically in the embodiment of hinge 10 as illustrated in FIGS. l-4, door hinge part 32 is formed with door attaching plate portions 42, 44, 46 and 48, which are configured such as to lie in parallel surface abutting engagement with door surfaces 24, 26, 28 and 22, respectively; and mounting hinge part 34 is formed with cabinet attaching plate portions 50, 52 and 54, which are configured such as to permit portions 52 and 54 to lie in abutting engagement with frame member surfaces 16 and 18, respectively. Curls 38 and 40 are of course formed integrally with plate portions 42 and 50, respectively.
The solid plate hinge construction thus far described is known for its structural integrity and is conventionally fixed to the door and cabinet frame by suitable fasteners, such as screws 56, passed through apertures 58 arranged in door plate portions 46, 48 and mounted plate portion 54. However, hinges of this general construction would not find acceptance for use in quality furniture cabinets, due to the fact the double plate thickness formed by lapping hinge portions 44 and 52 maximizes the dimension of crack 30.
In accordance with the present invention, the dimension of crack 30 is minimized by providing a mortise 60 in rearwardly facing door surface 26 to receive lapping hinge portion 44, and preferably at least a portion of lapping hinge portion 52 when the door is in closed position. From viewing FIGS. 1, 3 and 4 it will be apparent that as the depth of mortise 60 is increased, rearwardly facing surface 26 is moved progressively in a direction rearwardly towards frame member surface 16 resulting in a corresponding decrease in the dimension of crack 30. For a given hinge plate thickness and clearance between hinge portions 44 and 52 when door 12 is closed, the maximum depth of mortise 60 is limited by the minimum dimension of crack 30 at which marring of the finish on surfaces 16 and 26 would occur.
Mortise 60 is preferably dimensioned in a direction lengthwise of frame member 14 such as to snugly engage the relatively upper and lower marginal edges 44a, 44b of hinge portion 44, as shown in FIG. 3, in order to prevent unsightly cracks between the door and hinge. To obtain a snug fit and still insure that hinge portion 52 is freely received within mortise 60, the dimension of hinge portion 52 between its upper and lower marginal edges 52a, 52b is reduced relative to that of hinge portion 44 by an amount necessary to compensate for manufacturing tolerances and/or wear induced shifts of hinge portions 44, 52 in a direction axially of hinge pin 36. For acceptable manufacturing tolerances and standard hinge materials, the vertical dimension of hinge portion 52 may be on the order of about one-sixteenth inch less than the corresponding dimension of hinge portion 44.
In FIG. 5 there is illustrated'a slightly modified hinge construction for use-with doors having squared marginal edges. This construction is identical to that described above with reference to FIGS. 14, with the exception that hinge lapping and attaching portions 44, 46 and 48 are replaced by a single hinge lapping and attaching portion 44', which is received with a mortise arranged in rearwardly facing surface 22. As before, an increase in the depth of mortise 60' will serve to reduce the dimension of crack 30' defined by lapping surfaces 10 and 22.
Now referring particularly to FIG. 6 it will .be understood that it is the practice of some cabinet manufacturers to install a door by a procedure wherein all of hinges 10 are first attached to the door and the door then mounted on the cabinet. When this procedure is employed and a single workman is assigned the task of mounting the door, it is convenient for the workman to rest the lower edge of door 12 on a cabinet shelf or frame base with mounting hinge plate 34 of the uppermost hinge abutted against surfaces 16 and 18, so as to steady the the door and sufficiently free his hands to permit driving an initial screw 56a into the lowermost aperture 58a of portion 54 of the uppermost hinge. Thereafter, driven screw 56a serves to support the door for clockwise pivotal movement, as viewed in FIG. 6, to position door edge surface 24 parallel to frame member surface 16 and the lower hinge or hinges in position for attachment to frame surface 18. An initial angle a of about 50 between surfaces 16 and 24 has been found to provide for proper centering of the door vertically relative to the cabinet opening to be closed by the door.
Since it is conventional practice to form mounting hinge plate portions 50-54 with the same dimension in a vertical direction, i.e., in a direction axially of hinge pin 36, the center of aperture 58a is necessarily arranged above lower edge 52b of mounting plate portion 52. As a result, when door 12 is pivoted in the manner discussed above, the lower edge 52b, which initially rests in supporting engagement with surface 16, is moved along an are into a final position, wherein it, as well as the entire rear surface of mounting plate portion 52, is spaced forwardly of surface 16. As a result, hinge 10 does not have the appearance as having been installed in a workmanlike manner and the crack between the door and cabinet frame is again enlarged. Moreover, if the workman then attempts to attach the mounting plates of the lowermost hinges such that their portions 52 abut against surface 16, the axes of the lower and upper hinge pins are out of alignment and the door will never close properly.
To overcome the above problem, the hinge of the present invention features the forming of mounting plate portion 54 with at least one extension or ear portion 72, which permits the center of aperture 58a to be arranged vertically below lower edge 52b, as best shown in FIGS. 7-9.
The precise vertical spacing of aperture 58a below edge 52b is determined by the intersection of a radius line 73 passing through edge 52b and arranged at an angle of (oz/2) with respect to the rear surface of mounting plate portion 52 and a line 74 representing the distance aperture 58a is to be set back from mounting plate portion 52 and cabinet frame surface 16, as determined by structural considerations of the hinge and cabinet side wall (see FIG. 9). It will be apparent that when aperture 58a is so positioned, mounting plate 34 may be pivoted about screw 560 through an angle a from its initial position shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, through an intermediate position shown in FIG. 8 and into its final or installed position shown in FIG. 9, whereby forcing edge 52b to traverse or swing relative to surface 16 along the arcuate path indicated by corresponding points designated as X, X and X in FIG. 10.
It will be understood that when mounting plate 34 is in the position shownin FIG. 9, the full rear surface of mounting plate portion 52 is disposed in abutting en gagement with surface 16, thereby preventing an undesired crack therebetween and positively insuring that when the mounting plates of the lowermost hinges are subsequently installed with their portions 52 in engagement with surface 16, the axes of the several hinge pins will be in vertical alignment.
Of course, an ear is preferably provided on the relatively upper end of mounting plate portion 54 for aesthetic reasons, as well as to permit reverse installation of the door wherein the upper edge thereof is to be initially abutted against the top wall of the cabinet and a lowermosthinge is to be initially fixed in place.
While each of the features described hereinabove are proposed to be utilized in mounting solid plate barrel hinges of the types illustrated in the drawings, it will be readily apparent that mounting procedure involving the proper positioning of the mounting screw receiving apertures may be employed with other hinge constructions, including for instance so-called self seating hinges.
I claim:
1. In a cabinet construction the combination comprising:
a cabinet frame including a frame member, said frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface bounding in part an opening in said cabinet,
a door for closing said cabinet opening, said door defining front, rear and side edge surfaces; and
at least one hinge for pivotally mounting said door on said frame member for movement about an axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between. cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping and arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said frame member such as to define a crack therebetween, said hinge including a door hinge plate and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, said hinge plates each having a hinge pin mounting portion and an attaching portion extending therefrom, said door and cabinet attaching portions having at least portions thereof fixed in abutting engagement respectively with said rear lapping surface and said forwardly facing surface whereby said abutting portions are disposed in an overlapping, substantially parallel relationship when said door is in said closed position, said rear lapping surface having a mortise of a depth sufficient to receive said door plate abutting portion and at least a portion of the thickness of said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion therewithin when said door is in closed position, said mortise is dimensioned in a direction lengthwise of said frame member so as to snugly engage opposed marginal edges of said door plate abutting portion received therewithin, and said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion being of a dimension measured between opposed marginal edges thereof less than that measured between said opposed marginal edges of said door plate abutting portion, whereby said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion is freely received within said mortise and the dimension of said crack is reduced by the thickness of saiddoor plate abutting portion and said portion of the thickness of said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion.
2. In a cabinet construction the combination comprising:
a cabinet frame including a frame member, said frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface bounding in part an opening in said cabinet,
a door for closing said cabinet opening, said door defining front, rear and side edge surfaces; and
at least upper and lower hinges for pivotally mounting said door on said frame member for movement about a vertical axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping and arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said frame member such as to define .a crack therebetween, said hinge including a door hinge plate and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, said hinge plates each having ahinge pin mounting portion and an attaching portion extending therefrom, said door and cabinet attaching portions having at least portions thereof fixed in abutting engagement respectively with said rear lapping surface and said forwardly facing surface whereby said abutting portions are disposed in an overlapping, substantially parallel relationship when said door is in said closed position, said rear lapping surface having a mortise of a depth sufficient to receive at least said door plate abutting portion therewithin, whereby the dimension of said crack is reduced by at least'the thickness of said door plate abutting portion, another portion of said cabinet attaching portion is disposed in abutting engagement with said inwardly facing surface, said other portion has at least one extension projecting beyond said cabinet attaching portion abutting said forwardly facing surface in a direction lengthwise of said frame member and has an aperture to receive a cabinet mounting hinge plate attaching device, and the center of said aperture is located within said extension, whereby permitting said cabinet attaching portion of said upper hinge abutting said forwardly facing surface to be swung about said center from a position wherein a lower marginal edge thereof is disposed in abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface and a rear surface thereof is disposed in a non-parallel relationship to said forwardly facing surface into a position wherein the whole of said rear surface is disposed in parallel surface engagement with said forwardly facing surface.
3. In a cabinet construction including a cabinet frame having an opening bounded in part by a mounting frame member extending vertically from an essentially horizontally disposed frame member, said mounting frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface disposed essentially normal thereto, a door for closing said cabinet opening and having front and rear surfaces and vertically rising side and top and bottom edge surfaces, and at least upper and lower hinges for pivotally mounting said door on said mounting frame member for horizontal swinging movement about an axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping and arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said mounting frame member such as to define a crack therebetween, each said hinge including a door hinge plate fixed adjacent a mounting side edge surface of said door and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, each said cabinet mounting hinge plate including a hinge pin mounting portion and a cabinet attaching portion, said cabinet attaching portion including one portion having a rear surface thereof bounded by upper and lower marginal edges and arranged in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface and an other portion thereof arranged at a right angle to said one portion to position a rear surface thereof in parallel surface abutting engagement with said inwardly facing surface, said other portion having at least one aperture for receiving a fastener for affixing said cabinet mounting hinge plate to said mounting frame member, the improvement for permitting said door to be affixed to said mounting frame member by a procedure consisting of attaching said door hinge plates of said upper and lower hinges to said door adjacent said mounting side edge surface thereof, resting said door bottom edge surface on said horizontally disposed frame member with said door in open position and with said door mounting side edge surface inclined at an angle of about 0: degrees relative to said forwardly facing surface, driving a cabinet mounting hinge plate fastener device into said inwardly facing surface through said aperture of said other portion of said upper hinge, pivoting said door through about 0: degrees to arrange said door mounting side edge surface in a substantially parallel relationship to said forwardly facing surface, and driving a cabinet mounting hinge plate fastener device into said inwardly facing surface through said aperture of said other portion of said lower hinge, while insuring that a rear surface of said one portion of said upper hinge is disposed in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface, whereby to insure that the axes of the hinge pins of said upper and lower hinges are disposed in alignment at the completion of the door mounting procedure wherein: said other portion of at least said upper hinge is formed with at least one extension projecting beyond mounting plate attaching portion engaged with said forwardly said lower marginal edge of said one portion of said upper hinge in a direction lengthwise of said mounting frame member, and the center of said aperture formed in said other portion of at least said upper hinge is located within said extension, whereby when said door is pivoted during said door mounting procedure said lower marginal edge of said one ortion of said upper hinge moves from engagement rom said forward y surface through an arcuate path of about a degrees about said center and back into engagement with said forwardly facing surface whereupon said rear surface of said one portion of said upper hinge is disposed in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface.

Claims (3)

1. In a cabinet construction the combination comprising: a cabinet frame including a frame member, said frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface bounding in part an opening in said cabinet, a door for closing said cabinet opening, said door defining front, rear and side edge surfaces; and at least one hinge for pivotally mounting said door on said frame member for movement about an axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping And arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said frame member such as to define a crack therebetween, said hinge including a door hinge plate and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, said hinge plates each having a hinge pin mounting portion and an attaching portion extending therefrom, said door and cabinet attaching portions having at least portions thereof fixed in abutting engagement respectively with said rear lapping surface and said forwardly facing surface whereby said abutting portions are disposed in an overlapping, substantially parallel relationship when said door is in said closed position, said rear lapping surface having a mortise of a depth sufficient to receive said door plate abutting portion and at least a portion of the thickness of said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion therewithin when said door is in closed position, said mortise is dimensioned in a direction lengthwise of said frame member so as to snugly engage opposed marginal edges of said door plate abutting portion received therewithin, and said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion being of a dimension measured between opposed marginal edges thereof less than that measured between said opposed marginal edges of said door plate abutting portion, whereby said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion is freely received within said mortise and the dimension of said crack is reduced by the thickness of said door plate abutting portion and said portion of the thickness of said cabinet mounting plate abutting portion.
2. In a cabinet construction the combination comprising: a cabinet frame including a frame member, said frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface bounding in part an opening in said cabinet, a door for closing said cabinet opening, said door defining front, rear and side edge surfaces; and at least upper and lower hinges for pivotally mounting said door on said frame member for movement about a vertical axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping and arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said frame member such as to define a crack therebetween, said hinge including a door hinge plate and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, said hinge plates each having a hinge pin mounting portion and an attaching portion extending therefrom, said door and cabinet attaching portions having at least portions thereof fixed in abutting engagement respectively with said rear lapping surface and said forwardly facing surface whereby said abutting portions are disposed in an overlapping, substantially parallel relationship when said door is in said closed position, said rear lapping surface having a mortise of a depth sufficient to receive at least said door plate abutting portion therewithin, whereby the dimension of said crack is reduced by at least the thickness of said door plate abutting portion, another portion of said cabinet attaching portion is disposed in abutting engagement with said inwardly facing surface, said other portion has at least one extension projecting beyond said cabinet attaching portion abutting said forwardly facing surface in a direction lengthwise of said frame member and has an aperture to receive a cabinet mounting hinge plate attaching device, and the center of said aperture is located within said extension, whereby permitting said cabinet attaching portion of said upper hinge abutting said forwardly facing surface to be swung about said center from a position wherein a lower marginal edge thereof is disposed in abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface and a rear surface thereof is disposed in a non-parallel relationship to said forwardly facing surface into a position wherein the whole of said rear surface is disposed in parallel surface engagement with said forwaRdly facing surface.
3. In a cabinet construction including a cabinet frame having an opening bounded in part by a mounting frame member extending vertically from an essentially horizontally disposed frame member, said mounting frame member defining a forwardly facing surface and an inwardly facing surface disposed essentially normal thereto, a door for closing said cabinet opening and having front and rear surfaces and vertically rising side and top and bottom edge surfaces, and at least upper and lower hinges for pivotally mounting said door on said mounting frame member for horizontal swinging movement about an axis extending lengthwise of said frame member between cabinet opening closed and open positions, said door when in said closed position having a portion of said rear surface thereof overlapping and arranged substantially parallel to said forwardly facing surface of said mounting frame member such as to define a crack therebetween, each said hinge including a door hinge plate fixed adjacent a mounting side edge surface of said door and a cabinet mounting hinge plate joined by a hinge pin, each said cabinet mounting hinge plate including a hinge pin mounting portion and a cabinet attaching portion, said cabinet attaching portion including one portion having a rear surface thereof bounded by upper and lower marginal edges and arranged in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface and an other portion thereof arranged at a right angle to said one portion to position a rear surface thereof in parallel surface abutting engagement with said inwardly facing surface, said other portion having at least one aperture for receiving a fastener for affixing said cabinet mounting hinge plate to said mounting frame member, the improvement for permitting said door to be affixed to said mounting frame member by a procedure consisting of attaching said door hinge plates of said upper and lower hinges to said door adjacent said mounting side edge surface thereof, resting said door bottom edge surface on said horizontally disposed frame member with said door in open position and with said door mounting side edge surface inclined at an angle of about Alpha degrees relative to said forwardly facing surface, driving a cabinet mounting hinge plate fastener device into said inwardly facing surface through said aperture of said other portion of said upper hinge, pivoting said door through about Alpha degrees to arrange said door mounting side edge surface in a substantially parallel relationship to said forwardly facing surface, and driving a cabinet mounting hinge plate fastener device into said inwardly facing surface through said aperture of said other portion of said lower hinge, while insuring that a rear surface of said one portion of said upper hinge is disposed in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface, whereby to insure that the axes of the hinge pins of said upper and lower hinges are disposed in alignment at the completion of the door mounting procedure wherein: said other portion of at least said upper hinge is formed with at least one extension projecting beyond mounting plate attaching portion engaged with said forwardly said lower marginal edge of said one portion of said upper hinge in a direction lengthwise of said mounting frame member, and the center of said aperture formed in said other portion of at least said upper hinge is located within said extension, whereby when said door is pivoted during said door mounting procedure said lower marginal edge of said one portion of said upper hinge moves from engagement from said forwardly surface through an arcuate path of about Alpha degrees about said center and back into engagement with said forwardly facing surface whereupon said rear surface of said one portion of said upper hinge is disposed in parallel surface abutting engagement with said forwardly facing surface.
