Description
1 1 :2:2 G1 117 1 SEPARATING SO-CALLED ANGEL9HAIR FROM BULK GOODS The
invention relates to a method of separating so-called angels' hair from bulk goods and a separator for carrying out this method.
Where various bulk materials are concerned, particularly synthetic plastics granulates, a thread-like abraded material which is termed angels' hair and which may be up to a metre in length is frequently formed during the course of normal pneumatic fly conveyance. Since this angels' hair causes considerable problems when the bulk materials are removed from illos or when they are emptied from sacks for further processing, it must be removed. It is known practice to screen the bulk materials in order to achieve this end. Certainly, the appropriate screens or sieves are very large. Another known possibility is to use pneumatic separators, but these do not always result in a satisfactory degree of separation.
The invention is based on the problem of providing a improved method, and a separator for carrying out the improved method.
In accordance with one aspect of the present inventiong there is provided a method of separating so-called angels' hair from bulk goods, wherein a stream of the bulk goods is caused to flow in a layer under the influence of gravity over a surface occupied by spines and inclined to the vertical, the said surface moving with respect to the direction of flow of the bulk goods.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a separator for carrying out the method according to said one aspect of the invention, comprising a rotating cylinder the outside of which is provided with spines and which is so disposed beneath a slotlike bulk goods outflow orifice so that the stream of bulk goods flows downwardly over the ascending part of the periphery of the cylinder.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention, there 1 il __1 2 is provided, a separator for carrying out the method according to said one aspect of the invention, comprising a rotating hollow cylinder the inside surface of which is provided with spines and the axis of which is inclined to the horizontal and which is provided at its upper end with an inlet aperture while its lower end is provided with an outlet orifice for the bulk materials.
The method and the separator cause minimal complication and high degrees of separation. The separators have the advantage of requiring minimal space.
Separators for carrying out the method according to the invention are shown in simplified form in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment; and Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment.
The separator according to Fig. 1 comprises a drum or cylinder which may possibly also be of hollow construction, the outer periphery of which carries numerous long spines 2. The cylinder rotates about its axis 3 in the direction of the arrow 4.. The cylinder 1 is so disposed beneath a slot-like bulk goods discharge orifice 5 that the bulk goods flow in a flat layer over the rising part of the periphery of the cylinder 1 under the influence of gravity, flowing downwardly into a funnel 6 or the like. While this is happening, angels' hair present in the bulk goods is to a certain extent combed out. The angels' hair which remains clinging to the spines can be removed on the descending side of the cylinder periphery by means of auxiliary devices, not shown. In particular, vacuum extraction or air blow-off or brushing off may be applied. It is particularly advantageous to use a combination of the separator with a dust removal means (likewise not shown).
The separator shown in Fig. 2 works on the same principle as that shown in Fig. 1. It consists of a hollow cylinder 21, the axis of which is -1 i 3 inclined to the horizonal and the inner surface of its shell is provided with radially inwardly directed spines 22. The hollow cylinder rotates in the direction of the arrow 24. In the higher end is an inlet aperture for the bulk goods flowing out of a silo 25 and leaving the hollow cylinder 21 through its lower open end, the said bulk goods being caught, for instance, in a funnel 26. Here, too, the cleaning of the spines may take place by means of auxiliary devices mentioned in conjunction with Fig. 1. This embodiment is particularly suitable for combination with a simultaneous removal of dust from the bulk goods.
