Abstract

A seal assembly comprising one or more O-ring type seals 3 for sealingly engaging the periphery of a shaft 2 the O-ring seal(s) being sealingly received between a pair of axially opposed seal faces, and clamping means 13 surrounding the O-ring seal(s) for radially compressing the O-ring seal(s) to sealingly engage said shaft and said opposed seal faces. Preferably the axially opposed seal faces are provided by plates 4, 5 or by one plate and or face of pump housing 1. The seal may be solid or hollow, and split, and of P.T.F.E. acetal or polyether sulphane. <IMAGE>

Description

Title:O-Ring Seal Assembly Description The present invention relates to shaft seal assembly in particular a shaft seal asssembly suitable for sealing the shaft of a rotarv Pumr.It is desirable for a pump shaft seal assembly to be relativelv simple in construction capable of adjustment to accomadate for wear, and be capable of effectively sealing the shaft as it undergoes axial and radial movements in addition to the normal rotarv motion of the shaft.
It is a general aim of the present invention to provide a seal assemblv which has the above features.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a seal assembly including seal means comprising one or more 0-ring tvpe seals for sealingly engaging the periphery of the shaft.the 0-rinx seal(s) being sealingly received between a pair of axially opposed seal face and clamping means surrounding the 0-rinx seals for radial lav compressing the O- ring seals to cause the 0-ring seals to sealingly engage said shaft and said axial seal faces.
Reference is now made to the sole accompanying drawling which is an radial section through a seal assemblv acccording to the present invention shown in situ on a pump shaft.
In the drawing there is shown a pump housing 1 through which a shaft 2 passses. The shaft 2 is sealingly connected to the housing 1 via seal assemblv 30.
The seal assemblv 30 includes a first generally annular plate 4 which is axially spaced from a second generally annualar plate 5.The shaft 2 passes through both annular plates 4.5 with sufficient clearane so as not to interfere with the tolerated radial movement of the shaft 2.Seal mean-- located between the plates 4,5 the seal means comprising ar C-ring te seal 3 which sealingly engages the internal opposing faces of plates 4.5 respectively.
Preferably the plates 4.5 are axially moveable towards one another so as to axially grip the 0-ring seal 3 by a predertimined amount. In order to define a desired spacing between the plates 4,5 spacing elements 9 are provided. Through bolts 10 served to secure the plates 4,5 to the housing 1 and also serve to clamp the plates 4,5 into contact with the spacing elements 9.An 0-ring seal 11 is located between the housing 1 and plate 5 so as to provide a seal there between spacing elements 9 are provided to prevent over compression of 0-ring 11, Clamp means 13 are provided which surround the 0-rinx seal 3 and serve to radially compress the seal 3.Such radial compression causes the seal 3 to radially engage the shaft 2 and also causes the seal 3 to deform in opposite axial directions and thereby engage the opposed seal faces 4.5.The clamp means mav take the form of a radiallv contractable sleeve sh as for example Jubilee (Regd. TX) clip.
The 0-rinR seal 3 is preferably formed from a relatively rigid vet deformable plastic material such as P.T.F.E..zellamoid.åcet l.polvther sulphane may be of solid or hollow cross-section.
It is envisiaged that in use the seal 3 mav rotate with the shaft 2 whilst maintaining sealing contact with the opposed seal faces 4.5 or may remain stationary during the rotation of the shaft 2.Axial movement of the shaft 2 is accomodated by the sliding contact between the seal 3 and the shaft 2 whilst radial movement of the shaft 2 is accomodated bv sliding contact in the radial direction between the seal 3 and the opposed seal faces 4.5.
In situations where the axial extent of the seal 3 is insufficient to enable a clamp means to be incorporated it is envisiaged that several seals 3 may be located side by side to be embraced by a common clamp means.
It is envisiaged that one of the seal faces 4.5 may be defined by an end wall face of the housing 1 in which case only one annular plate would be required. It is also envisaged the 0-rinx seal(s) may be split so as to have opposed end faces which abut one another when the seal is located on the shaft. The split enables the 0-ring to be opened and therebv inserted radially onto the shaft. In use the opposed end faces and the seal are maintained in sealingly abutment by the surrounding clamp means.
