Abstract

A band hinge which is adjustable both horizontally and vertically has a main plate 1 with predrilled holes, a back plate 2 with a preformed crucifix hole arrangement and two side plate stiffeners 3. Standard crooks and two nut eye bolts are then used to attach the complete hinge assembly to the gate and post. They are usually used in pairs. <IMAGE>

Description

ADJUSTABLE BAND HINGE This invention relates to an adjustable band hinge.
Band hinges are well known instruments for hanging wood or steel gates to posts by means of a compatable crook and a two nut eye bolt. They can be either single or double bands permanently linked together and having integral holes through which screws or bolts are inserted to attach the hinge to the gate. They can be made of ferreous or non ferreous metals. They are usually used in pairs.
Band hinges are, however, relatively difficult to fix in position to enable the gate to be hung plumb.
According to the present invention there is provided a crucifix arrangement of holes to enable the gate to be easily adjusted through 3600.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows in perspective the adjustable band hinge; Figure 2 illustrates the crucifix hole arrangement on the back plate; and Figure 3 shows in elevation the adjustable band hinge Referring to the drawings the hinge comprises a main plate with preformed holes 1 and A back plate with crucifix holes 2 with two side stiffening plates 3.
In order to secure the hinge to a gate screws or bolts are inserted through the preformed holes on plate 1 once the hinge has been positioned on the gate. The crook has then to be positioned on the post and the two nut eye bolt then inserted into the back plate 2, a nut on either side of the plate, and the gate then lifted into position by means of locating the eye over the crook.
The gate can then be adjusted both laterly and vertically and on completion the two nuts are tightened to secure the complete assembly.

Claims (6)

1. An adjustable band hinge comprising a main plate, a back plate and two side stiffeners.
2. An adjustable band hinge as in Claim 1 wherein pre drilled holes are provided on the main plate to secure same to the gate.
3. An adjustable band hinge as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein a crucifix arrangement of holes is provided on a back plate.
4. An adjustable band hinge as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein a two nut eye bolt is inserted to attach the hinge to the crook.
5. An adjustable band hinge as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the band can be single or double.
6. An adjustable band hinge substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawing.
