Abstract
An overflow fitting for a siphon-discharge w.c. cistern comprises a tube 10 extending within the siphon outlet 24 between an upper inlet aperture 23 and a level 22 which is below the input level (17) to the siphon. <IMAGE>
Description
A TOILET AND AN OVERFLOW THEREFOR
The invention relates to a toilet and an overflow there for.
In known toilets, the overflow from the cistern is situated in the wall thereof and directs overflow water to an external location such as a drain. This arrangement may be inconvenient, for example, where a toilet is situated centrally in a large building, rather than adjacent an exterior wall and generally will require a bore to be formed in a wall of the room in which the toilet is situated through which the outflow can pass.
According to the invention there is provided a toilet, wherein the overflow for the cistern is arranged to direct overflow water into the toilet pan.
In this way, a toilet is provided which is suitable for location anywhere in the building and which will require no modification to the room in which it is provided to accommodate the outflow pipe.
Preferably the overflow is arranged to direct overflow water into the output of the syphon of the toilet. Thus, a passage need not be provided out of the cistern.
The input of the overflow may be provided at any suitable position but preferably is provided adjacent the top of the syphon so that the distance between the input and output of the overflow may be minimised.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a combined overflow and syphon for use in a toilet, the overflow comprising a tube extending within the syphon between a lower level in the output of the syphon below the level of the input to the syphon and an upper overflow level at which it is connected through the wall of the syphon to the exterior thereof.
The syphon and overflow may thus be provided as a single compact unit.
Preferably, the overflow is formed integrally with the syphon. The overflow preferably comprises a tube, at least part of the wall of which is shared with the syphon.
The overflow and syphon may be formed of any suitable material and may be formed from plastics material.
The syphon may be of any appropriate type and may be of the type comprising a loose fitting piston arranged to urge water upwardly through the syphon.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a toilet including a combined overflow and syphon as described in relation to the previous aspect of the invention and including any of the features subsequently described in relation thereto.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is ap elevation in crosssection of the embodiment.
In the embodiment, an overflow 10 is formed integrally with a syphon ii.
The syphon 11 is generally in the shape of an inverted U. The output end 12 is screw-threaded to permit connection thereof to tubing (not shown) leading to a toilet pan. A flange 13 is provided adjacent the screw threaded end 12 of the syphon ii.
The input end 14 of the syphon 11 includes a portion 15 of enlarged diameter in which a piston 16 is mounted for reciprocal movement towards and away from a downwardly facing input opening 17. The piston 16 includes a stem 18 which is journalled in bushings 19 provided in a substantially horizontal part 20 of the wall of the syphon 11.
The overflow 10 comprises a cylindrical tube 21, the lower end of which extends to a level below the level of the syphon input opening 17. The outer portion 24 of the wall of the tube 21 is shared with the wall of the syphon 11. The tube 21 extends upwardly to a level adjacent the top of the syphon 11 and communicates with an aperture 23 in the outer wall of the syphon 11. The aperture 23 is provided at a distance above the flange 13 such that it is above the normal level of water in a cistern in use.
In operation, therefore, with the combined syphon and overflow mounted in the cistern of a toilet, if the water should rise above the normal level it will pass through the aperture 23 down the overflow tube 21 and out into the syphon output 12. The syphoning effect of the syphon 11 will not be affected as the lower end 22 of the tube 21 is below the level of the syphon input opening 17.
All of the parts of the syphon and overflow may be made from plastics material.
The syphon need not be of the type including a piston 16 but may be of any suitable type.
Claims (8)
1. A toilet in which an overflow of the cistern exhausts into the toilet pan.
2. A toilet according to Claim 1, in which the overflow exhausts into the syphon of the cistern.
3. A toilet according to Claim 2, in which the exhaust of the overflow is adjacent the top of the syphon.
4. A combined overflow and syphon for use in a toilet, the overflow comprising a tube extending within the syphon between a lower level in the outlet of the syphon below the
b level of the input to the syphon and an upper overflow level at which it is connected through the wall of the syphon to the exterior thereof.
5. A combined overflow and syphon according to Claim 4, in which the overflow is formed integrally with the syphon.
6. A combined overflow and syphon according to Claim 4 or 5, in which the overflow and syphon are formed from plastics material.
7. A combined overflow and syphon according to Claim 4, 5 or 6, in which the syphon comprises a loose fitting piston arranged to urge water upwardly through the syphon.
8. A toilet including a combined overflow and syphon substantially as herein described and with reference to the accompanying drawing.
