Abstract
A water powered turbine has a rotor 6 which is mounted on a horizontal shaft and produces mechanical power when rotated by a source of pressurised water. The rotor is fitted with regularly spaced horizontal cups 5 around its periphery and is secured on the shaft within a prefabricated housing. Water is supplied directly onto the rotor cups via a square sectioned inlet duct 3 fitting precisely over the upper section of the rotor. A bank of blades 8 are fitted to the inlet duct on the trailing side of the rotor to create a partial vacuum within the cups prior to their re-entry into the inlet duct. <IMAGE>
Description
WATER POWERED TURBINE
This invention relates to a Water Powered Turbine.
A water turbine is a well known method of obtaining mechanical power from a source of running water. It can consist of either a propeller or bladed rotar onto which a source of water is directed.
Existing turbines are relatively expensive owing to their design requiring a high degree of precision engineering.
According to the present invention this turbine consists of a prefabricated housing with a secured lid and open bottom for the exit of exhausted water.
Within the housing is contained a horizontal support shaft fitted with suitably sealed bearings.
Secured on the shaft is a metal rotar fitted with a series of regularly spaced peripheral cups.
A square sectioned water inlet duct fitting precisely over the upper section of the rotar is secured within the housing.
A bank of blades are fitted to the inlet duct, the width of and to the trailing side of the rotar, creating an outward airflow and cdnsequently giving a partial vacuum within the rotar cups, prior to their re-entering the inlet duct.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the turbine housing with water inlet duct and centre shaft bearing.
Figure 2 shows the inlet duct in relation to the centre shaft which carries the rotar (not seen).
Figure 3 shows in section the inlet duct fitting precisely over the cupped rotar with vacuum blades in position.
Figure 4 shows three-dimensionally the peripheral cups in relation to the rotar.
Referring to the drawing the turbine comprises a prefabricated box housing 1 into which is secured a square sectioned water inlet duct 3 which fits precisely over the upper section of the rotar 6.
The rotar being fitted with peripheral cups 5 receives pressurised water from the inlet duct, rotates, discharging exhausted water from the rotar cups at point 7.
The turbine rotar is secured on a centre shaft 4 and runs in suitably sealed bearings 2 secured within the housing.
A bank of blades 8 covering the width of the rotar are fitted in such a way as to create an outward flow of air giving a partial vacuum within the cups prior to their re-entering the intake duct.
Claims (5)
