Abstract

A movable stand such as may be used to assist papering a ceiling comprises a base portion (1), which may be foldable, means (2), such as rollers or castors, for supporting the base portion above a surface and for permitting movement of the base portion relative to the surface, and a support (7) arranged above the base portion (1) and adjustable relative to the base portion. The support (7) may be detachable from the base portion. A tray (4) may be secured to the base portion. <IMAGE>

Description

MOVABLE STAND The present invention relates to a movable stand and, more particularly but not exclusively, relates to a movable stand such as may be used to assist papering a ceiling.
When applying paper to a ceiling it is necessary to apply paste to the paper. The paper is then held adjacent to the area of the ceiling to be papered and is applied a short length at a time . This is a difficult operation to perform. Further, it is time consuming and often wasteful of paper and paste.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a movable stand to hold paper in close proximity to a ceiling to assist papering the ceiling.
According to the present invention there is provided a movable stand which comprises: a base portion; means for supporting the base portion above a surface and for permitting movement of the base portion relative to the surface; and a support arranged above the base portion and adjustable relative to the base portion.
The base portion may be foldable. A tray may be secured to the base portion.
The supporting means may comprise rollers or castors.
The support is preferably detachable from the base portion. The support may be contoured so as to define a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being nearer to the base portion than the second portion.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of one embodiment of a movable stand according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is an elevational view of a part of the movable stand shown in Figure 1.
The figures show a movable stand such as may be used by a decorator to assist in papering a ceiling. The stand comprises a base portion 1 which is made, for example, of aluminium or coated steel tubular elements which at their lower ends are bent inwardly and inserted into tubular rollers 2, for example of plastics material. As an alternative to the tubular rollers, castors may be employed.
The upper end of the tubular elements are hinged together to permit the stand to be folded when it is not in use. To prevent the stand collapsing when it is in use, hinged links 3 are provided. A tray 4 is secured to the upper part of the base portion 1 for receiving implements such as brushes, scissors or other decorating tools.
A mount 5 for an adjustable upright element 6 is provided with a nut or screw, for example, to maintain the upright element 6 in the desired position. Mounted on the upper end of the element 6 is a support 7 which is removably mounted on the element 6 by way of a tubular portion 8.
The support 7 may be made of a plastics material and is contoured with a first portion 9 and a second portion 10, the first portion 9 being nearer the base portion 1.
In use, the support 7 can be removed from the element 6, for example by pressing a push button (not shown) and pasted ceiling paper can be arranged on the first portion 9 at a convenient location, such as on a pasting table. One end of the pasted paper with the paste uppermost can then be moved over the second portion 10 which is nearer the ceiling than the first portion and which forms a ready dispenser for the paper. As the paper is applied to the ceiling, the stand can be moved across the room on the rollers 2 thereby ensuring that only a short length of paper is unsupported at any time.
The upright element 6 is adjustable to enable the stand to be used with ceilings of varying heights.
Not only can the stand be folded away when not in use, but its simple construction enables it to be sold in compact, modular form for easy assembly by the purchaser.

Claims (8)

1. A movable stand which comprises: a base portion; means for supporting the base portion above a surface and for permitting movement of the base portion relative to the surface; and a support arranged above the base portion and adjustable relative to the base portion.
2. A movable stand as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base portion is foldable.
3. A movable stand as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein a tray is secured to the base portion.
4. A movable stand as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the supporting means comprises rollers.
5. A movable stand as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the supporting means comprises castors.
6. A movable stand as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the support is detachable from the base portion.
7. A movable stand as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the support is contoured so as to define a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being nearer to the base portion than the second portion.
8. A movable stand substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
