Abstract

An Iso-freight container stacker has a structural frame (1) incorporating storage platforms (4) allowing transportation of a plurality of Iso-containers (3) simultaneously. Platforms (4) are fitted with catchment means to secure containers during movement. The multiple container transporter/stacker is capable of placing or retrieving containers to or from the platforms itself or containers may be passed between the frames of the stacker and placed or retrieved directly to or from the platforms from above. <IMAGE>

Description

MULTIPLE CONTAINER TRANSPORTER/STACKER This invention relates to a multiple container transporter/stacker.
Iso-freight container stackers are well known container handling devices which comprise a structural framework mounted on rail tracks or pneumatic tyres, and fitted with hoisting and lowering equipment which can traverse along the top part of the framework.
They are commonly used to lift containers from a stack of containers onto wheeled vehicles or remove them from wheeled vehicles and place into a stack.
According to the present invention there is provided a multiple container transporter/stacker comprising a moveable framework mounted on wheels with means for hoisting, lowering and traversing Iso-freight containers.
Storage platforms are provided within the framework and the transporter/stacker has the means to automatically or semiautomatically place or retrieve containers on or off these platforms.
Containers may also be removed from or placed upon these storage platforms by outside means (commonly a container crane) operating from above the described invention. This is made possible by providing sufficient distance between the main frames to enable containers to be lowered/hoisted through. This attribute allows the invention (one or more in number) to operate in conjunction with a Container Crane (manually or by computer control) vastly increasing efficiency of the loading/unloading system.
Referring to the drawings - Figure 1 is an end elevations Figure 2 is a side elevation and Figure 3 is a plan where the multiple container transporter/stacker comprises a main structural framework (1) mounted on wheels (5). On the top of the main framework is mounted the hoisting/lowering equipment (2) which can traverse along the framework in the direction of the arrows (6) The platforms (4) are built into the main framework and provide support to the stored Iso-freight containers (3). Figure 2 shows containers (3) on platforms (4) and additionally containers (3) stacked on the ground.

Claims (8)

1 A multiple container transporter/stacker comprising a moveable framework mounted on wheels, means for hoisting, lowering and traversing Iso-freight containers, and storage within the framework for such containers.
2 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 1, wherein platforms are provided within the structural framework for storage of Iso-freight containers.
3 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 1, wherein electronic equipment is provided to control automatically or semi-automatically placement or retrieval of containers on or off the platforms by the transporter/stacker itself.
4 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the platforms provided within the structure are fitted with remote operated catchment means to secure the containers during movement.
5 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim
1 wherein the framework is arranged to allow containers to be passed through either ascending or descending.
6 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the containers ascending or descending through the framework may be placed directly onto the platforms or the ground below the transporter/stacker.
7 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 1, when partly or fully laden with containers transits to another location for loading or unloading purposes.
8 A multiple container transporter/stacker as claimed in Claim 1, or a plurality of such units working in conjunction with a Container Crane (ship loader/unloader) and with movements and operations of all items controlled by computer.
