Description

PACKER ROLLER The invention refers to a packer roller with several packer rings rotating on bearings within a frame on a shaft (axle) for compacting soil.
In known packer rollers, the packer rings have a wide-angled V-shaped running surface, which gives a large contact area with the ploughed land for compacting the soil, but which does have the disadvantage, on the one hand, of not adequately breaking down clods and, on the other hand, that in heavy soil the packer rings run lightly over the ploughed land without exerting any effective compaction.
The task of the invention is therefore to create a packer roller, equipped with packer rings which produce good compaction of the soil and simultaneously exert an incontestable cutting effect, and which is simple to assemble and economical to produce.
This task is accomplished according to the invention in that each packer ring is made of two cast iron supporting rings with an intermediate steel cutting disc of larger diameter than the supporting rings, with the latter being fixed together with the cutting disc by a screw fitting.
Further characteristics of the invention may be seen from the subsidiary claims.
The object of the invention does not only cover the characteristics of the individual claims but also a combination of them.
The packer rings according to the invention comprising the supporting rings and the middle cutting disc whose diameter projects beyond the supporting rings provide good compaction of the soil and at the same time an incontestable cutting effect, which is especially guaranteed even in heavy ploughed land.
The two lateral supporting rings of each packer ring compress the soil with their running surfaces and the intermediate cutting disc penetrates into the ground and breaks up (slices) the soil, even large clods. In doing this the depth of penetration of the cutting disc is limited by the supporting rings.
Packer rings assembled in this way are simple and economical to produce from cast iron and steel plate, whereby the identical supporting rings are cast in a mould and and the cutting disc fabricated from steel plate and all three parts of the packer ring can be quickly assembled into a sturdy packer ring by means of screws.
Furthermore, fitted between adjacent packer rings and to the packer frame are stripping devices which advantageously automatically remove any soil clinging to the sides of the cutting disc or the running surfaces of the supporting rings whilst working the ground.
The drawing illustrates one specimen design according to the invention which is described in more detail below. It shows: Fig. 1 a front view of several adjacent packer rings arranged on one shaft, Fig. 2 a cross-section through one packer ring comprising two supporting rings with one cutting disc located between them, Fig. 3 a side view of the same packer ring with the screw fitting for fixing the supporting rings to the cutting disc, Fig. 4 a top view of a part section of a packer frame with packer rings and associated stripping device, Fig. 5 a side view of a packer ring rotating on bearings within a packer frame and the stripping device fixed to the packer frame.
A packer roller for compacting ploughed land has a frame (1) in which is fitted on bearings at least one shaft (axle)(6), which takes several rotating packer rings (2) arranged next to each other at intervals along the length of the shaft.
Each packer ring (2) is made up of two identical supporting rings (3) and an intermediately located cutting disc (4) of greater diameter than the supporting rings and the two supporting rings (3) are fixed together with the cutting disc (4) by a screw fitting (5).
The two supporting rings (3) are made of cast iron, such as steel castings, gray castings etc., and the cutting disc (4) is fabricated from steel plate.
The cutting disc (4) consists of a circular disc whose outside diameter is preferably about double the size of the diameter of the supporting ring (3) and which projects out beyond the outside diameter of the supporting rings (3), i.e. the ratio of the radius of the supporting ring (3) to the cutting disc (4) is 1 : 2.
In Fig. 3 the radial measurement of the supporting rings (3) is indicated by (X) and the radial measurement of the cutting disc (4) projecting beyond the supporting rings (3) is marked (Y), where (Y) is double the size of (X).
The internal diameter of the circular shaped cutting disc (4) corresponds to the internal diameter of the supporting rings.
The cutting disc (4) is evenly designed and on its outside diameter has a rounded or blade-type continuous outer edge (4a).
The two supporting rings (3) are constructed with the same size diameter and have an inclined running surface (3a) sloping and/or curving away from the cutting disc (4) out towards the longitudinal direction of the shaft (6) and down towards the shaft (6).
Each supporting ring (3) is connected by means of radial ribs (7) to a central bearing bush (8) and manufactured with the ribs (7) and the bearing bush (8) as one piece.
Each supporting ring (3) shows in relation to its running surface (3a) an external, inwards undercut (recess)(9), in which area the screw fitting (5) is arranged; screws and nuts are provided for the screw fitting (5) and they are fixed through holes in the recesses (9) of both supporting rings (3) and the cutting disc (4) and fit inside the recesses (9) and therefore do not protrude outwards beyond the supporting rings (3).
Between adjacent packer rings (2) there is a stripping device (10) fixed to the frame (1) by screws (11) or suchlike which sits close against the sides of the cutting disc and the running surfaces (3a) of the supporting rings. This stripping device (10) is made of sheet metal which slopes and/or curves outwards and downwards from the packer frame (1) and ends just a short distance above the lowest point of the running surface (3a)of the supporting rings (see Fig. 5).
The stripping devices (10) at least fit close to and practically follow the profile of the sides of the cutting disc and the running surfaces (3a) of the supporting rings and remove any soil adhering to the packer rings (2).
in Fig. 5 is illustrated the stripping device (10) running from the frame (5) to the packer rings (2), the curved shape shown by a solid line and the slope by a dash-dotted line.
ihis stripping device (10) can be designed to be stiff or springy, so that in both cases it sits securely against the packer rings (2) so as to strip off the soil.
