Abstract

A brush for use in washing dishes comprising a shaft 1 and a releasably attachable brush head 3; enabling replacement of a worn or unsuitable brush head. The shaft 1 comprises a base member 2 having means for releasably receiving the brush head in the form of a slot arrangement 5 on the base member 2 which slidably receives a correspondingly shaped formation 8 on the brush head 3. The brush head 3 is retained in the base member 2 by means of resilient catch 10 engaging within hole 12 of the base member. Formation 9 acts a stop. <IMAGE>

Description

"Brush" This invention relates to a brush with a changeable brush head, and especially but not exclusively to a dish washing brush.
Dish washing brushes generally comprise a plastics material shaft which has a head to which a series of bristles are permanently secured. Various different designs are produced but they all suffer from the disadvantage that when the bristles become worn the whole brush, including the shaft, must be replaced.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a brush comprising a shaft having a base member and a brush head, the base member having means for releasably receiving the brush head.
Preferably the means for releasably receiving the brush head comprises a slot arangement on the base member for slidably receiving a correspondingly shaped formation on the brush head.
Preferably also means are provided for locking the brush head on the base member Most preferably the locking means is in the form of a resilient catch member attached to the brush head which is releasably received by a through hole in the base member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of a brush in accordance with the present invention showing a brush head attached; Fig 2 is a perspective view corresponding to Fig 1 showing the brush head separated from the brush; Figs 3a, 3b and 3c show respectively side, end and plan views of the base of the brush of Fig 1; and Figs 4a and 4b show respectively plan and side views of the brush head of the brush of Fig 1.
Referring to the drawings a brush in accordance with the present invention comprises a shaft 1 having a base member 2, and a brush head 3.
The base member 2 has extending sides 4 which form a slot formation 5. The brush head 3 has a baseplate 6, from which a series of bristles 7 extend, and which provides ledges 8 to correspond to the slot formation 5 on the base member 2. An end stop 9 on the baseplate 6 provides a support for a catch 10, which has a wedge shaped operating head 11.
To attach the brush head 3 to the base member 2, the baseplate 6 is inserted in the base member 2 so that the ledges 8 engage the slot formation 5. The brush head 3 is slid home until the end stop 9 engages the base member 2.
At the same time the operating head 11 of the catch 10 engages a through hole 12 in the base member 2 to retain the brush head 3 in position. The brush is then ready for use.
The particular embodiment illustrated is for use as a dishwashing brush but the basic construction can be adapted for many different types of brush.
To remove the brush head 3 when it becomes worn, it is a simple matter to push the operating head 11 of the catch 10 downwardly to disengage it from the through hole 12 in the base member 2. The brush head 3 can then be slid off the base member 2 and a replacement brush head 3 installed. It is not then necessary to dispose of the whole brush when the bristles 7 become worn as replacement brush heads 3 can be fitted as and when required. In addition, it is of course possible to use one shaft 1 for a number of alternative brush heads 3 for various different purposes.
Modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the catch 10 may be substituted with other fixing means such as, a bolt, screw, a pin, a spring, magnetic, suction or other means.

Claims (10)

1. A brush comprising a shaft having a base member and a brush head, the base member having means for releasably receiving the brush head.
2. A brush according to Claim 1, in which the means for releasably receiving the brush head comprises a slot arrangement on the base member for slidably receiving a correspondingly shaped formation on the brush head.
3. A brush according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, which includes means for locking the brush head in position on the base member.
4. A brush according to Claim 3, in which the locking means is in the form of a resilient catch member attached to the brush head which is releasably received by a through hole in the base member.
5. A brush according to Claim 4, in which the resilient catch member comprises a resilient arm one end of which is attached to the brush head and the opposite end of which carries an operating head, thus allowing substantially vertical movement of the operating head.
6. A brush according to any preceding Claim, in which the base member lies at an angle to the plane of the remainder of the shaft.
7. A brush according to any preceding Claim, in which a first brush head may be removed from the base member and replaced by a second brush head, the first and second brush heads comprising identical means of retaining the brush head on the base member.
8. A brush according to any preceding Claim, in which the brush head comprises an end piece formed so as to abut an end face on the base member when the brush head is fully received by the base member.
9. A brush substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
10. A dish washing brush substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
