Abstract

A mudflap moulded of rubbery material comprises a web 10 with a rearward projecting rib 12 for engaging an edge of a vehicle mudguard. The mudflap can be secured to the vehicle through lugs 14, 16. The mudflap comprises clamping members 24, 26, 28 which are metal plates embedded therein and in the lugs 14, 16, while a clamping member 28 provides lateral reinforcement. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE Mudflaps for Motor Vehicles DESCRIPTION The invention relates to mudflaps for motor vehicles and means for their attachment.
Patent Specification GB 1442226 describes mudflaps comprising a web of flexible material for securing the flap to the mudguard of the vehicle. A discrete reinforcing strip is secured to an upper part of the web. The mudflap can be fitted by means of clamping jaws embracing an edge of the vehicle mudguard and the reinforcing strip. The reinforcing strip may be embedded in the mudflap. The clamping jaws may be bolted to the mud flap through a central base portion, and secured to the mudguard by means of a clamping bolt passing through one jaw.
Patent Specification GB 2042619 itself relates to a clamp for securing a mudflap to an edge of a vehicle body. The clamp comprises a pair of clamping jaws held together by a bolt. The problem with these clamps is the number of parts involved in fitting the mudflap to the vehicle, and the positions at which the bolts have to be reached for tightening.
The invention provides a mudflap made of rubbery material and having means for whereby the mud flap can be secured to a vehicle, which mudflap comprises a number of separate clamping members embedded in the rubbery material of the mudflap and in a projection therefrom in the general plane of the mudflap, the projection comprising a hole through the clamping member whereby another clamping member may be bolted thereto.
The other clamping member may be of any desired shape to fit a particular part of a vehicle body, and clamping members of various shape may be supplied in kits of parts with mud flaps to render them useful on any one of a number of vehicle models. Such kits of parts may include bolts which can be threaded in the other clamping members or in bolts whereby the other clamping members may be secured.
A mud flap according to the invention may comprise an additional clamping member or members embedded therein and extending laterally and/or longitudinally in order to reinforce the mudflap. Such an additional member need not be embedded in a projection from the mud flap. The other clamping members may be of various shape: for example U-shaped to pass over an edge of a body panel member, and/or provided with a flange for passing between a body panel and a bumper.
Drawings Figure 1 shows a mudflap according to the invention, a view from the front of a vehicle to which the mudflap may be secured, including the outlines of embedded clamping members; Figures 2, 3 and 4 each show another clamping member applied to the mudflap of Figure 1, a sectional view to the left, and a perspective view of the other clamping member to the right; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a mudflap according to the invention in position on a mudguard of a motor vehicle.
Referring first to Figure 1, the mudflap is moulded of rubbery material and comprises a web 10 with a rearward (with respect to the vehicle) projecting rib 12 for engaging an edge of the vehicle mudguard (Figure 5). Lugs 14, 16 in the general plane of the mudguard are means whereby the mudflap can be secured to the vehicle. The mudflap comprises clamping members 24, 26, 28 which are metal plates embedded in the rubbery material. The clamping members 24, 26 are each also embedded in the lugs 14, 16 respectively, while the clamping member 28 provides lateral reinforcement for the mudflap.
The clamping members 24, 26, 28 each have a hole through which a bolt 30 may be passed as shown in Figures 2 to 4 to engage another clamping member 34, 36, 38 respectively. In Figure 2, the bolt 30 is threaded in the clamping member 34, while in Figures 3 and 4 the bolt 30 engages a nut 32.
By tightening the bolt 30, the mudflap can be secured in place on a vehicle.
The holes through the clamping members 24, 26, 28 are elongated to allow fitting to more than one vehicle model.
The other clamping members 34, 36 may be used in conjunction with any of the clamping members 24, 26, 28 according to the shape of the vehicle mudguard to be fitted. The other clamping member 38 (which has reinforcing projections 40) is for use with the clamping member 28 on a vehicle having a wrap-around bumper 44 (Figure 5), an integral flange 42 being provided for passing between a body panel and the bumper 44.

CLAIMS:
1. A mudflap made of rubbery material and having means for whereby the mudflap can be secured to a vehicle, which mudflap comprises a number of separate clamping members embedded in the rubbery material of the mudflap and in a projection therefrom in the general plane of the mudflap, the projection comprising a hole through the clamping member whereby another clamping member may be bolted thereto.
2. A mudflap according to claim 1 comprising additional clamping member or members embedded therein and extending laterally and/or longitudinally in order to reinforce the mudflap.
3. A mudflap according to claim 2 in which the additional member is not embedded in a projection from the mudflap.
14. A mudflap substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings.
5. A kit of parts comprising a mudflap according to any preceding claim with another clamping member of any desired shape to fit a particular part of a body of a particular vehicle model.
6. A kit of parts according to claim 5 which includes bolts which can be threaded in the other clamping members or in bolts whereby the other clamping members may be secured.
