Description

1 M&C FOLIO: 230P59335 A Seat Back for a Motor Vehicle 2 3 6 0' WANGDOC:
1004k The present invention relates to a seat back for use in vehicles such as for the seating used by the driver or a passenger in private and commercial vehicles.
Drivers and passengers in motor vehicles often suffer from bodily complaints during long runs. These complaints may be very distressing and may in the long term lead to permanent impairment of health, more particularly among truck and bus drivers, who are subject to such stress for long periods of time. It is also to be noted that such impairment of bodily well-being may also have effects on the state of mind; the driver's attention may be distracted in traffic and there is generally a disadvantageous effect on the mental health of the driver or passenger which is hardly conducive to concentration on other traffic. Many attempts have been made to design seats which are more ergonomic in structure but the results so far have only been gradual changes with a slight improvement. since all such improved seat designs have been static. In a vehicle however it is necessary for the driver or passenger to stretch him- or herself, that is to say to perform a dynamic act having a massaging effect.
2 The invention provides a seat back as claimed in claim 1.
The pulsation cushion may consist of a fluid-tight material such as rubber or flexible plastics. in which a fluid wave is produced, for example by air if air is used for operation of the cushion, moving in the vertical or horizontal direction and the back of the spat occupant is subjected to a gentle oscillating or massaging effect. The use of such a device in commercial vehicles is particularly simple since they generally have a compressed air supply for brake operation.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention there is an adjustable pulsing device for control of the compressed air supply rate and the frequency of pulsation. Using this pulsing device, which may be operated in accordance with a program, it is also possible to set the absolute magnitudes of the amplitude and frequency of pulsation. It is also possible to vary the amplitude of pulsation during a cycle or during a number of cycles in accordance with a program. Furthermore the pulsation frequency may be arranged to be able to be varied in accordance with a program or freely. It is in this manner that the desired massage motion may be adapted to suit the individual physiological requirements of the sitting person so as to be in accord with the respective 1 6 3 driving situation and various parameters specific to the route used, such parameters being set in the controlling mechanism of the seat back.
In accordance with a further preferred feature of the invention the pulsation cushion may be removed from the back and used as couch member on which the driver may sleep. This offers great advantages since on long runs the situation in the cab may be such that the driver finds in hard to go to sleep. He will however find it very much easier to go to sleep with the help of pulsations which have a soothing effect on the nerves.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows diagrammatically a longitudinal section through a seat back in accordance with the invention.
In the drawing, a seat 1 has a cushion 20 integral therewith or fitted thereto so as to be suspended in place. The cushion consists of a hoselike deformable casing 3, which in its vertical extent has a plurality of chambers 4 to 9 sealed off from each other. The chambers 4 - 9 are connected with each other via pressure limiting valves 10.
A switch (not shown) is placed within convenient reach 4 of the seat occupant, for example to the side of a driver's seat. If the switch is now operated, compressed air will flow to the seat back via an adjustable pulsing device 13 through a pipe 12 into the chambers 4 and then. on reaching a certain pressure level, into the subsequent chambers 5 and so on, the chamber 4 being vented. The result is then a wave-like mgssaging motion along the backbone of the seat occupant.
