Abstract

An actuator body 4 is mounted onto a tube 8 of a gas container, which body when displaced vertically downwards permits the passage of gas from the container into an annular chamber 9, from where it passes across the face of a vibratory member 1. The vibratory member is secured in position by a retaining plug 3 which exerts a force onto a circular seal 2 and thence onto thevibratory member 1 and the resultant assembly is housed in a cap 10. The cap obtains guidance on the container and has projections 11 on the inner wall which enable it to lock down onto the container in order to give a continuous blast. Walls 5 and 13 of the actuator body 4 and the retaining plug 3 are of frusto-conical form. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS TO GAS POWERED ALARM DEVICE This invention relates to a personal alarm device, of the kind which can be carried in a pocket or handbag.
Such alarm devices have a vibratory member in an alarm actuator which is powered by compressed gas from a container holding compressed or liquified gas.
The vibratory member of such alarm devices has normally taken the form of a thin flat disc which can present problems during manufacture when the tension across the thin disc may vary within a production batch for a variety of reasons.
An object of the invention is to provide a new form of vibratory member, which overcomes this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a gas powered alarm device in which a member vibrates against an orifice during gas release, wherein the vibratory member is in the form of a disc which is held peripherally by a circular seal against conical surfaces and so creates tension across the face of the vibratory member.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example in the accompanying drawing, which is a sectional view through a gas powered personal alarm.
The vibratory member 1 which is a thin disc free of any sealant coating, is passed down the housing bore 12 and is supported by the cylindrical edge 7 of an orifice 6.
A resilient sealing ring 2 is then pushed to the midpoint along the length of the housing bore 12 and the retaining plug 3 is inserted into the housing bore 12 under a controlled force to a point where it compresses the sealing ring 2 between the conical faces 5 and 13, having also trapped the periphery of the vibratory member 1 against the conical face 5 of the housing 4, at which point the retaining plug 3 is permanently swaged into position and the compressed sealing ring 2 prevents the passage of gas into chamber 14.
Gas is released up a tube 8 from a container, not shown, which is housed in the cap 10 by depressing the top of the cap of the alarm. The pressurised gas flows around the edge 7, into the annular chamber 9 and causes the tensioned face of the vibratory member 1 to vibrate so that a loud screech alarm note is emitted from the orifice 6.
The actuator assembly can be released to stop the alarm, or can be locked down onto the container, by the use of greater pressure which locks the cap 10 onto projections 11. This enables a continuous alarm note to be produced in an emergency, which will continue until the gas supply fails.

Claims
1. A gas powered alarm device in which a member vibrates against an orifice during gas release, wherein the vibratory member is in the form of a disc which is held peripherally by a circular seal against conical surfaces and so creates tension across the face of the vibratory member.
2. An alarm as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the vibratory member is in the form of a clean disc without a sealant coating which could otherwise be affected by the gas propellant formulation such as those regarded as non-hazardous to the ozone layer.
3. An alarm as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein a resilient sealing ring is compressed, between the retaining plug and the vibratory member, which obviates the need to precisely position the retaining plug thus permitting greater manufacturing tolerances.
4. An alarm as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the vibratory member is mounted in a cap which has projections on its inner wall so as to enable the cap to be locked down onto a gas cylinder and release gas against the vibratory member to create a continuous alarm note.
5. A gas powered alarm device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
