Abstract
A railway goods truck for transporting bulk material, wherein, for discharging bulk material from the truck there is provided a side discharging arrangement towards each of the truck ends (1, 2) approximately in each case over the wheelset or bogie region, and a central discharging arrangement (7, 8, 9) in the intermediate part (6) of the truck. <IMAGE>
Description
Railway goods trucks for transporting
bulk material.
The invention relates to railway goods trucks for transporting bulk material.
When transporting bulk materials, for example coal, one of the requirements is to utilize the existing material handling devices in an optimum manner. With existing loading ramps of restricted length, for example, this means that as large as possible an amount of bulk material is to be handled. Since the length of a single goods truck, or correspondingly a goods train, is fixed, the more specific requirement is to accommodate the largest possible volume of material in each truck or unit of the train.
For a goods truck of a given length and having a particular cross-sectional profile the problem with which the present invention is concerned is that of enabling as large as possible a volume of bulk material to be accommodated in the truck.
According to the present invention there is provided a railway goods truck for transporting bulk material, wherein for discharging bulk material from the truck a side discharging arrangement is provided towards each end of the truck and a central discharging arrangement is provided in the intermediate part of the truck.
The side discharging arrangements discharge material from the sides of the trucks, i.e. on either side of the railway track, whereas the central discharging arrangement discharges material underneath the truck, i.e. between the rails of the track.
Each side discharging arrangement may be located above the region of a wheel set or bogie of the truck.
By way of example, a railway goods truck constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a side view of the railway goods
truck;
Fig. 2 shows a cross-section on the line A-A
of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 shows an end view in the direction of the
arrow B in Fig. 1.
From Fig. 1 it is apparent that at the truck ends 1 and 2, approximately in each case over the wheelset or bogie area, there is provided in the side of the truck a side discharging arrangement of a kind known per se for discharging bulk material from the truck. In
Fig. 3, looking in direction B indicated in Fig. l, the cross-section profile of the goods truck can be seen with the drive rods 3 for the discharging flaps 4 and 5 of the side discharging arrangement at that end of the truck.
Fig. 1 also shows, between the truck ends 1 and 2, an intermediate truck part 6 with a central discharging arrangement at the bottom of the truck.
In the floor area of the truck the central discharging flaps 7, 8 and 9 are shown. The number of central discharging flaps in a truck is matched to its overall structural length. The drive means for the opening mechanism of these flaps can be constructed in a manner known per se.
Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional view on the line
A-A in Fig. 1. The maximum permitted cross-sectional profile of the truck, which limits its load-carrying capacity, is shown in a broken line. The central discharging flap 7 of the truck is also shown.
The combination as shown in the drawings of two types of discharging arrangement each known per se and, in particular, the additional utilization of the space above the wheelset or bogie region as in a side discharge truck, leads to a considerable increase in the useful volume relative to the truck length.
To cite an actual example, with a train length limited by existing materials handling systems to 640 m, it was possible to increase the overall useful load of a train unit from about 2625 t of coal to 3000 t of the same material. It was possible to keep the tare weight of the trucks the same.
Claims (3)
1. A railway goods truck for transporting bulk material, wherein for discharging bulk material from the truck a side discharging arrangement is provided towards each end of the truck and a central discharging arrangement is provided in the intermediate part of the truck.
2. A truck according to claim 1 in which each side discharging arrangement is located above the region of a wheel set or bogie of the truck.
3. A railway goods truck substantially as described herein with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
