Description

2220846 LIQUID APPLICATOR The present invention relates to a liquid
applicator such as a liquid cosmetic hair-preparation applicator for applying to the hair various types of liquid cosmetic hair preparations such as hair dyes, hairsetting fluids, perm anent-wav in g preparations for the hair and similar hair preparations.
Hitherto, when a hair dye is applied to the hair, an applicator brush is first dipped into the hair dye in a c6ntainer and then pulled out of the container and the hair dye applied to the hair. This is very cumbersome for the user. In addition, when the applicator brush is pulled out of the hair-dye container, there is the danger that the applicator brush will catch on the neck of the container and flick the hair dye out of the container. In order to prevent this, another conventional hair-dye applicator has been proposed, in which a suitable valve unit is incorporated for controlling the feeding of hair dye to an applicator brush mounted an a front-end portion of a hair-dye container. The valve unit is opened through a so-called push-out operation of the applicator in order to feed the hair dye to the applicator brush. However, this conventional applicator suffers from its cumbersome push-out operation. In addition, when the push-out operation thereof is conducted excessively, the hair dye often drops from the applicator brush and splashes the user's clothes. Furthermore, in all of the above-mentioned conventional applicators, there is the danger that the hair dye will be accidentally applied to the skin in the vicinity of the hairline as the hair dye is being applied to the hair. These are problems inherent in the conventional liquid cosmetic hair-preparation applicators.
According to the present invention, there is provided an applicator comprising a shaft sleeve for being gripped by a user; a liquid supply element for holding a liquid, said liquid supply element being positioned in said shaft sleeve; a mount piece supporting a plurality of cores permeable to said liquid, said mount piece being mounted in a frontend portion of said shaft sleeve and said plurality of cores being so implanted in said mount piece as to axially penetrate said mount piece so that said cores extend forwards and rearwards from said mount piece to 1 have their rear-end portions extending into said liquid supply element and to have their front-end portions projecting forwards from the front end of said shaft sleeve to form front projections; a plurality of cap means impermeable to said liquid and each on said front projection of a respective one of said cores; and a plurality of comb teeth extending adjacent to said cores.
The applicator is preferably a liquid cosmetic hair-preparation applicator having cores comprising fibre bundle cares positioned in two rows.
The comb-shaped teeth may form a row on one side of the cores to form a one-sided comb. However, it is preferable for the comb-shaped teeth to form two rows on opposite sides of the cores to give a doublesided comb.
With the liquid cosmetic hair-preparation applicator in accordance with the present invention, the liquid cosmetic supply element absorbs and stores the liquid cosmetic hair preparation. Consequently, the liquid cosmetic supply element may be constructed of a synthetic resin fibre bundle a peripheral surface of which is coated with a synthetic resin film; or a suitable porous material such as a polyurethane foam material.
Each of the fibre bundle cores may be constructed of synthetic resin fibres tied together; or a felt suitably treated with resins.
In use, each of the fibre bundle cores sucks the cosmetic liquid hair preparation from the supply element through capillary action.
Both the supply element and the fibre bundle cores may be made of conventional synthetic resins such as polypropylene, polyester, nylon and the like.
The caps provided on the front-end portions of the cores may be made of any suitable material, provided that the material is impermeable to the liquid and is not damaged thereby. For example, the cap may be made of metal or plastics, and may be coated with a plastics film.
The cosmetic liquid hair-preparation applicator of the present invention may employ any conventional material employed in conventional hair preparation applicators in addition to the above specified materials.
Since the applicator of the present invention has a shaft sleeve which the user may hold or grasp easily, the user can conduct an application of the liquid hair preparation in substantially the same manner as writing with a writing pen.
The liquid cosmetic hair preparation is held in the supply element into which are inserted the fibre bundle cores which suck the liquid cosmetic hair preparation from the supply element through capillary action of the fibre bundle cores to ensure that the liquid cosmetic hair preparation is continuously supplied to the hair during the application operation. Consequently, the valve unit required in the conventional applicator is not required in the applicator of the present invention in which the socalled push-out operation is also not required, and, therefore, with the applicator of the present invention there is no fear that an excessive push-out operation will cause liquid cosmetic hair preparation to drop from the applicator.
In addition, with the applicator of the present invention, during application of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation to the hair, only the caps mounted on head portions of the fibre bundle cores and the tips of the comb teeth touch the skin. Application of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation to the hair is conducted only by the outer peripheral side surfaces of the fibre bundle cores and not by their head portions covered with the caps. Consequently, with the applicator of the present invention, there is no danger that the liquid cosmetic hair preparation will adhere to the skin during application thereof to the hair.
With the applicator of the present invention, since the application of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation to the hair is conducted as the user combs her hair, it is possible to apply the liquid cosmetic hair preparation to the entire surface of each hair.
The invention will now be described by way of non-limiting embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a first embodiment of an applicator in accordance with the present invention, taken along a diametrical line of the applicator; Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view of the applicator, taken along a diametrical line perpendicular to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front view of the applicator of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the applicator, taken along the line IV-IV of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a partial longitudinal sectional view of a second embodiment of an applicator in accordance with the present invention, taken along a diametrical line of the applicator.
In Figs. 1 to 4, the reference numeral 1 denotes a shaft sleeve an outer diameter of which is substantially the same as that of a conventional writing instrument. The shaft sleeve 1 has openings in its axial ends.
As shown in Fig. 1, a pair of outer shoulder portions 2a, 2b are formed an an outer peripheral surface of a front-end portion of the shaft sleeve 1.
Substantially three quarters of the interior of the shaft sleeve 1 forms a large-diameter portion or chamber 4 in which is received a liquid cosmetic hair-preparation element 9. The remaining portion of the shaft sleeve forms a small-diameter portion 3 with a diameter slightly smaller than that of the large-diameter portion of the shaft sleeve 1. In the front end of the shaft sleeve 1 is formed a flange which extends slightly radially inwards.
The small-diameter portion 3 is provided with four short axial grooves 5a serving as ventilation means. The grooves 5a are circumferentially spaced apart from each other.
Between the chamber 4 and the small-diameter portion 3 is formed a shoulder 6 serving as a seat portion 6 for supporting a front end of the liquid cosmetic hair-preparation supply element 9 as shown in Fig. 1.
Into the small-diameter portion 3 of the shaft sleeve 1 is pressfitted a mount piece 7 which is provided with a pair of axial ventilation grooves 5b in its outer peripheral surface. The grooves 5b are circumferentially spaced apart from each other.
Ten nylon fibre bundle cores 8 are so implanted in the mount piece 7 as to be in two rows each of which contains five cores 8 and also as to project both forwards and rearwards from the mount piece 7. The number and layout of the fibre bundle cores 8 implanted in the mount piece 7 may be modified as required. As is clear from the above description, each of the fibre bundle cores 8 is longer than the axial length of the mount piece 7. Consequently, the front-end portions of the fibre bundle cores 8 project forwards from the mount piece 7. A metallic cap 81 is fixedly mounted on each of the front ends of the fibre bundle cores 8 as shown in Fig. 1.
In the chamber 4 of the shaft sleeve 1 is received the liquid cosmetic hair-preparation supply element 9 made of polyurethane foam. The outer diameter of the element 9 is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the chamber 4, while slightly larger than the inner diameter of the smalldiameter portion 3 of the shaft sleeve 1. The front end of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation supply element 9 abuts on the seat portion 6 of the shaft sleeve 1 as shown in Fig. 1.
The rear-end portions of the fibre bundle cores 8 project rearwards from the mount piece 7 to form projections extending a predetermined depth into the front end of the supply element 9. The rear ends of the cores 8 have tapered edges to facilitate insertion of the cores 8 into the mount piece 7 and also to facilitate suction of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation from the element 9.
As shown in Fig. 1, a tall plug 10 is press-fitted to a rear-end opening portion of the shaft sleeve 1. An inner-end surface of the tall plug 10 abuts on the rear end of the supply element 9, and thereby cooperates with the shoulder portion 6 of the shaft sleeve 1 to hold the supply element 9 in a predetermined position within the-shaft sleeve 1.
A groove 5c is formed diametrically across an inner-end surface of the tail plug 10. By means of this groove 5c of the tail plug 10, the gap between the inner surface of the chamber 4 of the shaf t sleeve 1 and the outer surface of the supply element 9 communicates with the interior of the element 9.
On the other hand, on the front shoulder portion 2a formed on the frontend portion of the shaft sleeve I is detachably mounted a combshaped cap 12 on a front-end surface of which are integrally formed five comb teeth 13 which project axially forwards and are arranged in a row parallel to the rows of the fibre bundle cores 8. Incidentally, in this first embodiment of the applicator of the present invention, the number of comb teeth 13 is five so as to correspond to the number in each row of fibre bundle cores B. However, it is possible to change the number of comb teeth 13 as required. On the year shoulder portion 2b formed an the front portion of the shaft sleeve 1 is detachably mounted a cap 14 which is removed from the applicator during use and mounted on the applicator during non-use of the applicator.
Fig. 5 shows the second embodiment of the applicator. The second embodiment of the present invention has substantially the same construction as the first embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4 except in respect of the comb-shaped cap 12'.
In the second embodiment, a two-sided comb 13' is so formed as to be positioned on opposite sides of the rows of fibre bundle cores 8. In other words, the fibre bundle cores 8 are sandwiched between the rows of the comb teeth 13' which extend axially from a front-end surface of the comb-shaped cap 12'.
Since the rows of the comb shaped teeth 13' are disposed on opposite sides of the fibre bundle cores 8 as shown in Fig. 5, the user can conduct an application operation of the liquid cosmetic hair preparation as he moves the applicator in any direction, provided that the applicator is moved in a direction substantially perpendicular to the rows of the comb teeth 131. Consequently, the second embodiment is easier to use than the first embodiment.
