Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for purifying anthracene by distillation with petroleum hydrocarbons of boiling point 260 DEG C. to 315 DEG C. is modified by carrying out the distillation in the presence of caustic potash, so that the anthracene crystallizes from the distillate, and the carbazole may be obtained by boiling the residue in the still with water and drying the precipitated carbazole. In examples, powdered potash is added to a hot mixture of crude anthracene and gas oil and the whole heated under a reflux to 250 DEG C. The reflux is then disconnected and the distillation carried out either at ordinary pressures or in vacuo. The anthracene is obtained in a "fluffy" condition especially suitable for the manufacture of anthraquinone.
