Abstract

A device moving along over rough matter such as earth mixed with stones, scoops a certain depth of this, and raises what it has scooped, drops it into a sieve at the same time mixing it with other matter such as conditioner. The sieve can take the form of a rotating hollow cylinder 10 or funnel with holes, whose axis is at an angle to the horizontal. The smaller particles and conditioner fall back to ground level, and the larger particles are then collected or pulverised or deposited. <IMAGE>

Description

A SOIL DE-STONER AND CONDITIONER The invention relates to a mechanism which sifts particles and mixes something else with them. It can be especially useful for removing large stone and clumps at the same time as adding fertiliser and mixing it with the finer soil, and is here described with this application in mind. The Invention is pulled along by a vehicle such as a tractor.
The invention comprises a long hollow cylindical or funnel-shape drum, open at both ends, with many holes in it, whose axis is kept at an angle to the horizontal, into the higher end of which is fed a mixture of soil and conditioner. A mechanism raises soil from just below the surface of the ground up to the inlet into which the soil goes and where it is mixed with conditioner from a resevoir, and another mechanism makes the drum rotate about Its axis. and the whole invention is pulled along. The soil and conditioner make their way along the drum and are mixed, the finer particles and conditioner fall through the holes to the ground and the large stones and clumps come out at the lower end of the drum (to be collected in a container or deposited by the side or pulverised), all under the combined action of the slope and rotation of the drum and the vibration as it travels.
The inside of the drum can have ridges in a spiral pattern, like an Archimedian screw. The soil and conditioner then tend to follow the path of the screw, thus being in the drum for a longer time and having a greater chance of being sieved.
The application of heat to the can help to dry it and make it easier to sift.
To get the required results under the prevailing conditions, it is possible to alter independently such factors as: angle of the drum axis, speed of rotation of the drum, size of the drum holes, depth below the ground surface to which soil is scooped, speed of feeding earth into the drum inlet, speed of feeding conditioner into the drum inlet, speed at which it is pulled along.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 1, and will now be described: While the invention is being pulled along attached to a vehicle such as a tractor by means of a bar "1", scoops "2" take soil possibly with large stones and clumps from the ground level down to a depth of anything up to about a foot. This rough soil goes onto an apron "3" under the pressure of more being scooped, and then passes across to the bottom "a" of a conveyor belt 5 by the action of an Archimedian screw "6". The conveyor belt "5" has high ridges "7" between which the rough soil is trapped, and it raises the rough soil. At the top, the soil passes into a container "8" into which is also fed conditioner from a hopper "9" or resevoir. The soil then passes into a cylindical or funnel-shape drum "l10", which has many holes, is kept at a angle to the horizontal, and is made to rotate about its axis by a motor.
The rough soil and conditioner pass along the drum "10", and are thoroughly mixed and sieved at the same time. The finer parts of the soil and the conditioner fall through the drum holes to the ground, and the coarser parts arrive at the lower end of the drum "11" where they can be collected or pulverised or deposited at the side.
The depth of the scoops "2" can be altered by a mechanism involving a handle "12". Other factors, such as the angle of the drum 10" can be adjusted by various mechanisms (not shown).
An elevAtion of the devjce and a tractor 10. shown in Figure 2.

Claims (4)

1. A device consisting of mechanisms to scoop rough earth or other matter, raise it, combine it with soil conditioner or other matter, and pass it through a rotating, angled, perforated drum which both mixes and sieves it, allowing the fine particles and conditioner to fall through to the ground and collecting or pulverising or depositing the larger parts.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, the depth at which earth is scooped can be altered.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1, all the factors of which can be altered.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the earth or other matter can be heated.
