Abstract
A laminated board consisting of a substrate of wood, plywood, oriented strand board, chipboard or the like has bonded to it a facing by means of a wax adhesive. The facing can be of thermal insulation on its lower face or a tear-off sheet protecting its upper or exposed face. With the tear-off sheet, the surface is protected against damage until such time as the danger is over when the sheet can be ripped off leaving traces of the adhesive which can then be buffed to give a waxed shine finish.
Description
LAPIINATEI) BOARDS PIELD OF THE INVENTION; Tb P. piesent invention relates to laminated boards wherein a substrate of wood, plywood, oriented strand board, chipboard or the like has bonded to it a facing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sheets of such substrates are commonly used when building houses for floors. It is often desired to attach facings.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a laminated board wherein a substrate of wood, plywood, oriented strand board, chipboard or the like has bonded to it a facing characterised in-that the bond comprises a wax adhesive.
In one embodiment the facing is thermal insulation such as a slab of high density extruded foamed polystyrene or other plastics material. However the main advantages of the invention appear more clearly when the facing is a protective tear-off sheet of polythene or other plastics material; such sheets would protect the substrate during building work and then torn off to leave the substrate clean apart from any residues of the bond. any residues of the wax bond can be bluffed to give an attractive waxed finish.
Thus the substrates can be installed and when building is complete, the facing sheet in this embodiment can be torn off taking with it any plaster or paint drips onto it and the substrate polished by say a dry mop.
The wax adhesive is basically a wax, with preferably a high melting point, modified with additives to bond to the facing and the substrate, which can take a shine when buffet. The wax is sprayed in a molten state onto the substrate and then the facing is applied either whilst the wax is still molten or when the wax is reheated to melting point.
The main application of the invention foreseen is for flooring but the invention may be useful on furniture especially built-in furniture.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a schematic section of a first embodiment with a layer of bond shown abnormall thick, and
Figure 2 is a similar view of a second embodiment.
DESCRIPTION OF EXEP2LARY EMBODIMENTS
Figure 1 shows a flooring board substrate 11 having a facing 12 of thermal insulation material on its bottom face(bottom when installed).
Figure 2 shows a flooring board substrate 14 having a facing 15 in the form of a tear-off sheet on its upper face (upper when in use)
In both embodiments the facing is bonded to the substrate by an extremely thin layer 16 of a wax adhesive.
The wax adhesive is such that the facing can be removed relatively easily. In the first embodiment this allows the facing to be cut away and removed around joists.
It will be appreciated that it is possible to have an insulation layer and a tear-off sheet on the same substrate.
Claims (5)
1. A laminated board wherein a substrate of wood, pln ood, oriented strand board, chipboarc or the like has bonded t it a facing characterised in that the bond comprises a ax adhesive.
2. A laminated board according to claim 1 wherein the facing is a protective tear-off sheet of polythene or other sheet plastics material to protect the face it covers whilst the board is being installed and when the board is in place and ready for use the sheet can be torn off leaving a residue of the wax adhesive which can be bluffed to leave a wax-polished finish.
3. A laminated board according to claim 1 wherein the facing is a slab of thermally insulating material.
4. A laminated board according to claim 1 having a facing on both nain faces, one a protective tear-off sheet of polythene or other sheet plastics material and the other a thermally insulating slab, both bonded to the substrate by a wax adhesive.
5. A laminated board substantially as described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
