Abstract

A shaft 15 mounting a gear lever 9 for pivoting movement about the shaft axis is axially movable in bearing means 11, 14. The axial movement of the shaft (15) is preferably limited by stops in the form of resilient washers (24) mounted on the shaft. The bearing means 11, 14 is preferably mounted in the wall of a vehicle cab. The shaft (15) preferably has an integral lever arm (22) connected to an elongate link (17) by a mono-axial joint (18, 20). <IMAGE>

Description

GEAR LEVER LINKAGE This invention relates to a gear lever linkage, e.g., for a vehicle such a telescopic material handler.
A gear lever is typically moved in an "H" shift pattern to select the transmission speed ranges. If the gear box is remote from the operator's cab, problems are encountered in mounting the gear lever for the appropriate shift pattern.
The present invention provides a gear lever linkage comprising a shaft on which a gear lever is fixed and bearing means mounting the shaft for rotation about its axis and for translation along its axis so that the gear lever is pivotable about the shaft axis and translatable in a direction perpendicular to the plane of pivoting.
Optional and preferred features of the invention are defined in Claims 2 et seq.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a gear lever linkage; Figure 2 is a section on line II-II in Figure 1, including the side wall of the cab of a vehicle in which the linkage is installed; and Figure 3 is a section on line 111-111 in Fig. 1.
A knob 1 is provided on the upper end of a gear lever 9 whose lower end is fixed on a shaft 15 which extends through a housing 11. Each end of the housing 11 is provided with a plain bearing 14 permitting rotation and axial sliding of the shaft 15. The housing 11 is bolted on a side wall 12 of a vehicle cab in which the gear lever 9 is situated. The shaft 15 and housing 11 are protected by a cover 10 outside the cab wall 12. The axial sliding range of the shaft 15 is limited by rubber washers 24 which are fixed on it and which cooperate with the bearings 14 at the ends of the housing 11 as stop means.
The outer end of the shaft 15 has an integral lever arm 22 which is connected to one end of a linkage rod 17 by a mono-axial joint having bearings 18 and a pivot pin 20 whose axis is parallel to that of the shaft 15.
Similarly the other end of the rod 17 is connected by bearings 18 and a pivot pin 20 to an actuating lever 23 which operates the gear box (not shown) in an "H" shift pattern. Any error of movement between the shaft 15 and the lever 23 is taken up by the pivotal connection of the lever 23 to the rod 17.
The transverse portion of the "H" shift pattern is thus defined by the axial guidance of the shaft 15, while the verticals of the H correspond to pivoting of the gear lever 9 about the axis of the shaft 15.

CLAIMS:
1. A gear lever linkage comprising a shaft on which a gear lever is fixed and bearing means mounting the shaft for rotation about its axis and for translation along its axis so that the gear lever is pivotable about the shaft axis and translatable in a direction perpendicular to the plane of pivoting.
2. A linkage as claimed in claim 1, in which the shaft and bearing means have cooperating stop means for limiting the translation of the shaft.
3. A linkage as claimed in claim 2, in which the stop means comprise resilient washers mounted on the shaft and cooperating with end surfaces of the bearing means.
4. A linkage as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, in which the bearing means comprises a hollow housing through which the shaft extends, the housing having bearings supporting the shaft.
5. A linkage as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, in which the shaft extends through a wall of a vehicle cab, the bearing means being mounted on the said wall.
6. A linkage as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, in which the shaft has a lever arm which is connected to an elongate link by a mono-axial joint whose axis is parallel to the shaft axis.
7. A gear lever linkage substantially as described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
