Abstract
A tyre tread includes a layer of material of contrasting colour, preferably red, which becomes exposed when the tread has worn down to a predetermined level, which may be at or close to the legal minimum tread depth. By using, in the conventional lamination of a tyre, a layer of rubber material incorporating a dye of contrasting colour, a complete lamination of the contrasting colour can be incorporated into the tyre.
Description
TYRES
This invention relates to tyres.
Most pneumatic tyres are formed with a tread pattern for road-holding purposes, and in the U.K. and elsewhere, legal minima are laid down relating to the permissible depth of the tread pattern. Once the tyre is worn below this tread depth, the road-holding capability is impaired and, with pneumatic tyres, there is an increased danger of catastrophic tyre failure as the surface wears away and the wall thickness of it decreases.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a visible warning of tread wear to a predetermined depth.
In accordance with the invention, a tyre has a pattern of treads, and at least some of the treads, and preferably all of them, are provided with a layer of material of contrasting colour which becomes exposed when the tread has worn down to a predetermined level, which is basically that of incipient danger or at or close to the legal limit of minimum depth.
A pneumatic tyre is normally made by a process involving lamination of successive layers of soft rubber material which are adhered together. This process is known as "stitching", although the successive layers are not currently sewn together. Once the required thickness is achieved, a moulding process is adopted to form the required pattern and depth of tread of the tyre.
It will be appreciated that by using a layer of rubber material incorporating a dye of contrasting colour, a complete lamination of the contrasting colour can be readily incorporated into a tyre, and although the layer will be disturbed during the moulding process, it will be largely undisturbed in the full depth tread areas, which are the parts of the tyre to wear. There is thus close control of the position of the coloured layer , and therefore the positioning thereof within the thickness of the tyre.
The coloured layer is preferably red, which is the traditional warning colour, but other contrasting colours may be used.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. Thus, while the invention is primarily concerned with pneumatic tyres, it may also be applied to solid tyres with tread patterns.
Claims (3)
1. A tyre having a pattern of treads, wherein at least some of the treads, and preferably all of them, are provided with a layer of material of contrasting colour which becomes exposed when the tread has worn down to a predetermined level.
2. A tyre according to claim 1, which is a laminated pneumatic tyre having a complete lamination of the contrasting colour incorporated.
3. A tyre according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the coloured layer is red.
