Abstract

221,629. Denny, Sir A., and Edgecombe, F. T. Aug. 15, 1923. Dynamometers, rotary - transmission.-Relates to apparatus of the type comprising two sleeves mounted coaxially with the shaft the torsion on which is to be measured, one being a long sleeve fixed at one end to the shaft, the other free end being in spigot and faucet relation with the free end of the short sleeve, and indicating means to determine the relative angular motion of the sleeves, and consists in providing motionmagnifying gear for the indicating means and a lens or lenses rotatable with the shaft through which lens the indicating means is viewed. The. long and short sleeves 1, 3, Fig. 1, are split to be readily fixed to the shaft and are provided with arms 2 and 4 respectively. The arm 4 carries the pointer 6 and scale 5, either of which is movable relatively to the other. As shown, the scale is connected through gears 7, 8, Figs. 5 and 6, to a crank 9 connected to a lever 9<1> fulcrumed at 9<2> on the arm 2. A disc 11 connected to the sleeve 3 is provided with an aperture in axial register with the scale and pointer, the aperture being occupied by a lens 12 the focal length of which is the distance between the lens and the scale 6. A diaphragm 13 formed with a radial slot is also fixed to the disc 11. A stationary housing 14 surrounds the lens and indicating mechanism and is provided with a number of inspection apertures 15 arranged at suitable angular intervals. Lamps 16 serve to illuminate. the scale and pointer. Each half of the sleeve 1 is provided with two pockets for bearing pads spaced 90‹ apart, the pads being machined accurately to fit the spigot sleeve 3. At each face of the lens is arranged a wiper fixed to a rock shaft operated by a handle, the shaft being acted upon by springs so that the wipers are normally swung away from the lens face. By moving the shaft axially and rocking it the link surfaces may be cleaned.
