Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TOOLS This invention relates to tools.
According to this invention a tool comprises a handle, and structure providing two edges defining an angle therebetween.
The edges may be at right angles to each other.
The edges may be defined by respective plates.
The structure may be adjustable so that at least one edge is adjustable in length. For example the plates may be adjustable relative to each other.
A connection between the plates may be adjustable along a slot in one of the plates.
The structure may provide two further edges defining an angle therebetween spaced from the angle defined by said two edges.
One of the further edges may intersect one of the two edges.
The two edges and the two further edges may be substantially coplanar.
The structure may comprise a first plate, a second plate having an edge defining an angle with an edge of the first plate and movable to adjust the position of the angle along the edge of the first plate; a third plate having an edge defining an angle with a further edge of the first plate transverse to the edge of the first plate, the third plate being movable to adjust the position of the angle along the further edge of the first plate.
One arrangement comprises two flat plates each having parallel sides edges, one plate being disposed across one face of the other to project beyond at least one side edge of the other, and a handle extending away from the other face of said other plate.
The handle may be connected to the one plate and be adjustable with the one plate along a slot in said other plate.
There may be two or more parallel slots and gripping means associated with the slots for holding the plates together at selected positions along the slots.
The edges may be straight.
There may be a handle in the plane of the plate for example two handles extending in opposite directions from the ends of the plate.
The invention may be performed in various ways and some specific embodiments with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a tool; Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3 is an underneath plan; Fig. W is a part section showing a handle attachment; Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the attachment; Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing use of the tool; Fig. 7 is a plan view of another embodiment; Fig. 8 is a plan view of a further embodiment; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of another construction.
An edging or smoothing tool 10 Figs. 1 to 6 for use by a plasterer is made mainly for example from stainless steel and comprises a flat rectangular plate 11 providing parallel longer side edges 12, 13 and having a straight slot 14 midway between the edges 12, 13 and having ends spaced from the shorter end edges 15, 16 of the plate 11. A cross member 17 is in the form of a flat rectangular plate 18 which projects beyond the edges 12, 13 and has parallel side edges 19, 20 generally parallel to the edges 15, 16. The member 17 extends across one face 21 (in use the top face) of the plate 11 and a handle 22 is connected to the member 17 and extends away from the other face 23 of the plate 11.The handle 22 holds the plates 11, 17 together but can be released so that the position of the handle 22 in the slot can be adjusted lengthwise of the slot 14 as desired. Thus, for example, a bolt 28 Fig. 5 may extend through the plate 17 and the handle is in threaded engagement with the bolt stem and has an elongate end part 22a slidably located in the slot 14. The handle arrangement holds the plates 11, 17 together with an annular rubber washer 30 interposed between the handle and face 23. The handle can be slightly loosened on the bolt, the handle and crossmember 17 adjusted along the slot 14, and the handle retightened on the bolt 28. The handle may for example be of wood.
Alternatively or additionally there could be a handle in the plane of the plate 11 extending from the or each shorter edge 15, 16.
The tool is used for example as in Fig. 6. The substantially coplanar edges 12, 19 and 13, 20 are at right angles and an edge 40 between plastered surfaces 41, 42 is received in the junction between edges 12, 19 so that an accurate edge is obtained between surfaces 41, 42 at right angles.
The plastering tool can for example be used on reveals and soffits.
In other positions, an edge between one or more surfaces to be trued can be received in the junction between edges 20 and 12, or edges 19 and 13, or edges 20 and 13.
In a modification the slot 14 is omitted and the plates 11, 17 are fixed relative to each other.
In another modification Fig. 7 the plate 18 extends to one side 12 only of the plate 11 and in this case when it is desired to use the edge 13 the plate 18 is rotated to the dotted position so as to project beyond edge 13.
Alternatively the handle and plate 17 or 18 are reversed so that the plate 17 or 18 overlies the face 23.
If surfaces 41, 42 are not at right angles but another angle, the edges 12, 19 can be angled accordingly.
There could be more than one slot 14. For example as shown in Fig. 8, there could be three parallel slots, a central slot 14 and two flanking slots 40a, 41a.
Bolts 42a extend through the slots 40a, 41a and carry a wing nut 43 so that the nuts can be turned to grip the plates together so that the plates are held at three locations. The nuts and handle can be released and reengaged to permit adjustment along the slots.
In a further arrangement Fig. 9 the tool 50 may be of plastics and comprises a flat generally rectangular plate 51 having a slot 52 adjacent and parallel to a longer edge 53. Upper and lower flat plates 54, 55 each has an elongate abutment 54a, 55a shaped to conform to part of the depth of the slot slidable in the slot. A bolt 56 extends through the plates 54 55 to receive a wing nut 56a to clamp the plates 54, 55 to the plate 51 on either side thereof. The plates 5W, 55 can thus be adjusted along the slot 52 by release and retightening of the wing nut and the abutments 54a, 55a resist rotation of the plates relative to plate 51.
The plate 54 provides spaced edges 57, 58 at right angles to edge 53.
The opposite longer side 59 of plate 51 receives or is integral with a flat handle 60 generally in the plane of plate 51. The handle 60 and plate 51 have aligned apertures 61 for a user's fingers. The handle 60 could be replaced by a handle at right angles to the plane of plate 51.
A slot 62 is adjacent to and parallel to a shorter end edge 63 and receives parts 6W, 65 generally in a similar manner to parts 54, 55 in slot 52. Plate 64 provides edges 67, 68 at right angles to edge 63. Edge 63 intersects edge 53. Edges 12, 13, 19, 20, 15, 16 and 53, 57, 58, 63, 67, 68 are generally coplanar.
In one method of use edge 63 is placed against one face 69 of, for example, a window frame and plates 64, 65 adjusted in slot 62 to bring edge 68 against surface 70 of the window frame. The edge is thus accurately located and plates 54, 55 are adjusted to the desired position so that surfaces '41, k 2 can be smoothed true by movement of the tool over the surfaces, edge 40 being at the junction of edges 53, 58. Engagement of edges 63, 68 with surfaces 69 70 resists rotation of plate 51 about an axis at right angles to the plate 51.
The tool of Fig. 1 or 7 or 8 can be used similarly with end edge 16 flat against surface 69.
In modified arrangements the plates 17 and/or 54 and/or 64 are constructed so as to be adjustable to vary the extent to which edges 19 20 or 57, 58 or 67, 68 project beyond edge 12 and/or 13 or 53 or 63.
The arrangements of Figs. 1, 7, 8 could be provided with a slot similar to slot 62 adjacent edge 15 and/or 16 and movable structure similar to elements 64 65.
