Abstract

The invention relates to a dispensing and applicator device particularly suited for use by handicapped persons. Where a paste is to be applied to a brush or other applicator, say toothpaste onto a brush head, difficulties may be encountered by the disabled or blind. The device comprises a hollow body portion (2) forming a handle, said body portion adapted to contain compositions having a paste or cream-like consistency and to permit extrusion of said compounds from an outlet (6) of said body portion by a manually operated lever or press-button (4), wherein the outlet of the body portion communicates with a hollow dispensing portion (8) the latter being provided with applicator means (14), such as a brush head, there being provided apertures (12) through a wall area of the dispensing portion at said applicator means, giving communication between the interior of the hollow dispensing portion and the applicator means. <IMAGE>

Description

PASTE OR CREAM DISPENSER The invention is concerned with improvement in or relating to a dispenser for compounds having a paste or cream-like consistency, particularly but not exclusively for use by the physically handicapped.
The invention provides a dispenser device having a hollow body portion forming a handle, said body portion adapted to contain compounds having a paste or cream-like consistency and to permit extrusion of said compounds from an outlet of said body portion by a manually operated lever or press-button, wherein the outlet of the body portion communicates with a hollow dispensing portion the latter being provided with applicator means at an exterior surface of the dispensing portion, there being provided apertures through a wall area of the dispensing portion at said applicator means, giving communication between the interior of the hollow dispensing portion and the applicator means.
Advantageously the applicator means may be the tufts of a toothbrush, the compound to be dispensed being for example toothpaste or other dental treatment cream.
Thus for example a disabled person, who would ordinarily find difficulty in holding a toothbrush while squeezing paste onto its bristles, may use the device with one hand, using the pressure of one finger, or a blind person may use the device without risk of spillage.
There will now be described with reference to the drawings, two examples of a device according to the invention. The description is given by way of example only. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of one example of a dispenser; Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of the applicator means thereof; and Figure 3 shows a fragmentary view of a second example of a dispenser.
Figure 1 shows the first example of a dispenser which comprises a handle in the form of a body portion 2 having a cavity containing toothpaste, and is provided with a push-button 4 which operates a lever (not shown) to exert a squeezing pressure on the paste to cause it to be extruded from an outlet 6, which has an external screw thread.
The outlet 6 receives a hollow dispensing portion 8 which is screwed thereon and may be interchangeable to permit use by different persons. The portion 8 is provided with a hollow chamber 10 into which passes paste extruded from the outlet 6. Apertures 12 in the portion 8 permit paste to travel from the chamber 10 to emerge between the tufts 14 of applicator bristles. Figure 2 illustrates a convenient layout of bristle mounting positions 16 with intervening apertures 12.
Pressure upon the button 4 is therefore all that is required to put paste onto the bristles of the toothbrush and the device may readily be used by those having the use of one hand only, for example stroke victims.
An example, illustrated in Figure 3, shows the body portion of the device 2' moulded integrally with the dispensing portion 8', to form a disposable article. A cover or lid 16 (in chain dotted lines) is provided for reasons of hygiene.
A further example, not illustrated, includes a replaceable cartridge of toothpaste receivable within the body portion which is provided in the form of a sleeve enclosing said cartridge.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the following claims.

Claims (7)

CLAIMS:
1. A dispenser device having a hollow body portion forming a handle, said body portion adapted to contain compounds having a paste or cream-like consistency and to permit extrusion of said compounds from an outlet of said body portion by a manually operated lever or press-button, wherein the outlet of the body portion communicates with a hollow dispensing portion the latter being provided with applicator means at an exterior surface of the dispensing portion, there being provided apertures through a wall area of the dispensing portion at said applicator means, giving communication between the interior of the hollow dispensing portion and the applicator means.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the applicator means comprise brush head components.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the applicator means is a toothbrush head.
4. A device as claimed any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hollow dispensing portion is adapted to be attached to the hollow body portion by interengaging screw-threads.
5. A device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the body portion is integrally formed with the hollow dispensing portion forming a communicating cavity therewithin.
6. A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the body portion is adapted to receive a refill cartridge containing said compound.
7. A dispenser device for compounds having a paste or cream-like consistency, constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in a) Figures 1 and 2 b) Figure 3 of the drawings.
