Abstract
The thaw indicator consists of a simple ice cube (4) which is made from a mildly dyed water solution, placed in a clear plastic bag (2). The bag is then sealed and fitted into foodstuff packaging. The indicator changes shape if it melts. <IMAGE>
Description
FROZEN FOOD THAW INDICATOR
This invention relates to a frozen food - thaw indicator.
The purpose of this idea is for the consumer to at-a-glance determine if the food is safe to eat.
In recent years people have been ill as a result of eating food which has previously been thawed and then refrozen without them knowing.
By inserting a coloured ice cube (coloured say blue for easy observation) into the foodstuff packaging in the manufacturing stage, any malfunction such as a power cut for any reasonable time or temporarily removal of the goods from the freezer will result in the coloured ice cube partially or totally thawing and then refreezing in a disfigured form within the bag the cube is contained.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1. shows the transparant 6ellophane packet.
Figure 2. is the coloured ice cube which is put into the packet.
Figure 3. shows a polystyrene pallet with the food on top together with
the indicator and wrapped completely in Cellophane.
Figure 4. is a typical carton of frozen food with a viewing window.
Figure 5. is a typical packet of frozen food with a viewing window.
Figure 6. is an example of where the whole foodstuff such as a chicken
is wrapped in clear cellophane with the fitted indicator
showing.

Referring to the drawings the coloured ice cube 3 is placed in the clear plastic packet 2 and then sealed 1. This packet serves to contain any C water which thaws off. 4 shows the colured ice cube already in its packet and fixed in position for observation. 5 shows food seen from the outside through clear Cellophane wrapping. 6 shows a carton with
Cellophane wrapping 7 or just a clear window 8. A plastic flexible package 6B also has a window 8. 10 shows a polystyrene pallet and 9 is the clear Cellophane covering.
Claims (3)
1 The frozen food thaw indicator tells the consumer if the food is safe
to eat.
2. The frozen food thaw indicator will detect any malfunction in a
freezer for any considerable time.
3. The frozen food thaw indicator will melt completely if removed and
not refrozen.
