Abstract

A refuse collection vehicle has a hopper (15) with an arcuate floor (23). A packer (18) is arranged to swing relative to the hopper about an axis (19) to sweep refuse across the floor (23) into a storage space of a body (12) of the vehicle. The packer returns along the same path and has a platform (28) which penetrates between further refuse in a hopper and the floor (23) to raise that further refuse from the floor and allow the packer to pass beneath the further refuse, which eventually slides down in front of the packer. <IMAGE>

Description

FISHTAr!K FILTER The present invention relates to a fishtank filter.
In one type of fishtank filter, water is pumped up from the fishtank and fed into a tray containing a filter medium. The water percolates down through the medium and out through a hole centrally located in the bottom of the tray, running back into the fishtank.
The present invention provides a fishtank filter comprising a frame, a tray on the frame, the tray being adapted to contain a filter medium, and a pump for pumping water from a fishtank up into the tray, wherein a plurality of holes are provided in the bottom of the tray to allow water to drain out into a said fishtank.
The invention also provides a tray for a fishtank filter as hereinbefore defined.
Other, preferred features and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying single figure of drawings showing an embodiment of a fishtank filter in accordance with the invention.
In the drawing, a fishtank filter 1 comprises a frame 2 which can be supported above a fishtank. Two electrical pumps 3 are mounted on the frame 2, one on each end, a tray 4 is mounted on the frame between the pumps 2. The tray 4 is of rectangular shape and has a flanged lip 5. A bottom wall 6 of the tray 4 is stepped at its longitudinal sides 7, the steps sitting on longitudinal side walls 8 of the frame 2.
Water is fed from the pumps 3 into each end of the tray 4 through pipes 8 which sit in cutouts in the end walls 10 of the tray. The bottom wall 6 of the tray has a row 11 of evenly spaced through holes 12 along its length.
In use, the frame 2 is mounted on the top of the fishtank. Pipes (not shown) from the pumps 3 pass down into the water in the fishtank. Filter material (not shown) is placed in the tray 4, covering the bottom wall 6 of the tray 4. The pumps are switched on and water is pumped from the fishtank through the pipes 9 into tray 4. The water percolates down through the filter medium to the bottom wall 6 of the tray 4, where it runs out through the holes 11 back into the fishtank. It has been found, unexpectedly, that by providing a plurality of holes in the bottom of the tray, preferably of less than lOmm diameter, and preferably betweeen 3mm and 8mum, considerably less noise is caused by the water running back into the tank whilst the rate and capacity of the filter are not reduced, when compared to the prior art arrangement using only a single hole.
Various modifications may be made to the described embodiment and it is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.

Claims (9)

1. A fishtank filter comprising a frame, a tray on the frame, the tray being adapted to contain a filter medium, and a pump for pumping water from a fishtank up into the tray, wherein a plurality of holes are provided in the bottom of the tray to allow water to drain out into a said fishtank.
2. A filter as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tray is elongate.
3. A filter as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the holes are provided in a line extending the length of the bottom wall.
4. A filter as claimed in claim 3, wherein the holes are evenly spaced.
5. A filter as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the holes are of the same size.
6. A filter as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the holes are from 3mm to 8mm in diameter.
7. A-fishtank filter substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A fishtank filter tray, the tray being adapted to contain a filter medium and having a bottom wall with a plurality of holes therein to allow water to drain out of the tray.
9. A fishtank filter tray substantially 'as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
