Abstract
A tie for use in tying a e.g. bundle of cables comprises a flexible strap 10 having an enlarged head 12 at one end, the head being apertured for the free end of the strap to be passed after being looped around the bundle of cables to be tied, and the head being provided with an adhesive pad 22, 24 on its end surface. The positioning of the adhesive pad on the end surface of the head facilitates fixing of the tie to appropriate substrates, e.g. for fixing to a printed circuit board, leaving the strap free for looping around wires leading to or from the printed circuit board. <IMAGE>
Description
CABLE TIE
This invention relates to a cable tie provided with an arrangement for fixing it to a substrate.
It is known to provide a cable tie with an adhesive pad on its strap some distance from the head, for use in fixing the tie to a substrate. However such a tie has limited usefulness.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a tie for use in tying a bundle of cables or other elongate elements, the tie comprising a flexible elongate strap provided with an enlarged head adjacent one end thereof, the head being formed with an aperture therethrough for the free end of the strap to be passed through after being looped around the bundle of cables or other elements to be tied, and the head being further provided with an adhesive pad on its end surface.
The positioning of the adhesive pad on the end surface of the head facilitates fixing of the tie to appropriate substrates. The tie is particularly suited for fixing to a printed circuit board by means of its adhesive pad, leaving the strap free for looping around wires leading to or from the printed circuit board.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of a cable tie in accordance with the invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the tie shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a onepiece tie for tying around a bundle of cables or other elongate elements and comprising a flexible, alongate and flat strap 10 which is provided with a head 12 at one end.
The head 12 projects from one side of the flat strap 10 as can be seen in Figure 1, and projects beyond the opposite longitudinal edges of the strap, as can be seen in Figure 2.
The other flat side of the strap is formed with a series of transverse ratchet serrations 11, as shown in Figure 2. The head is formed with a through-aperture 16 extending generally perpendicular to the plane of the strap in the as-moulded condition of the tie. The head can therefore be seen to comprise inner and outer end walls 17,18 and opposite side walls 19,20. A toothed pawl 21 is pivoted to the inner end wall 19. The strap can be looped around a bundle to be tied and have its free end passed through the head aperture 16 in the direction of the arrow A shown in Figure 1, so that the strap serrations 11 will ride over the pawl 21. Once the strap is pulled tight and then released the pawl 21 engages the strap serrations to prevent the strap being withdrawn from the head in the return direction.
The outer end wall of the head is formed into a flat plate 22 which is provided on its outer surface with an adhesive coating 2#, in turn covered with a release paper. The plate 22 projects beyond the opposite sides of the head, as shown in Figure 2. Also, as shown in Figure 1, the plate 22 projects beyond the head at its side into which the fre end of the strap is to be inserted, but is flush with the other side of the head, from which the free end of the strap will project. Thus, the projecting length of the strap can still be severed flush with the exit side of the head.
The self-adhesive pad thus formed at the outer end of the head, and generally perpendicular to the plane of the strap in its as-moulded condition shown in the drawings, facilitates fixing of the tie to appropriate substrates, particularly to printed circuit boards as mentioned above.
Claims (6)
1) A tie for use in tying a bundle of cables or other elongate elements, the tie comprising a flexible elongate strap provided with an enlarged head adjacent one end thereof, the head being formed with an aperture therethrough for the free end of the strap to be passed through after being looped around the bundle of cables or other elements to be tied, and the head being further provided with an adhesive pad on its end surface.
2) A tie as claimed in claim 1, in which the adhesive pad comprises a flat plate integral with the head of the tie.
3) A tie as claimed in claim 2, in which the adhesive pad lies generally perpendicular to the plane of the strap in the as-moulded condition of the tie.
4) A tie as claimed in any preceding claim, in which a side of the strap is formed with a series of transverse ratchet serrations and a toothed pawl is formed within the head aperture to interlock with the strap serrations when the strap is passed through the head in a predetermined direction.
5) A tie as claimed in claim 4, in which the adhesive pad terminates flush with the side of the head from which the free end of the strap projects when the tie is tied.
6) A tie for use in tying a bundle of cables or other elongate elements, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
