Abstract

221,470. Goodrich Co., B. F., (Assignees of Macdonald, F. J.). Sept. 6, 1923, [Convention date]. Lasting and pulling over. - A lasting machine particularly intended for rubber shoes has means for holding an annular upper 62 in position to receive a last 41, means for advancing the last from a non-contiguous position into the upper, and means for stretching the upper over the last and drawing its margin over the edge of the insole comprising a series of pairs of gripping jaws surrounding the lasting position and simultaneously actuated to grip the edge of the upper and conform it to the bottom of the last. The last 41, Fig. 1, rests on a table supported by vertically slidable bars 50 raised and lowered by a chain 53 passing over a pulley 58 raised and lowered by a crank 40 on a driven shaft 17. The upper is positioned in the machine with its lower edge resting on the lower jaws 68 of the series of grippers. Each gripper unit comprises a vertically adjustable support 64, Fig. 10, to which is pivoted a finger 63 carrying a pivoted member 70 to which the upper and lower jaws 67, 68 are pivoted at 69. The lower jaw has a cam face 73 co-operating with a roll 81 mounted on the finger, and a pin 74 co-operating with the arm 70. The upper jaw 67 is controlled by a roll 78 on an arm connected by a spring 79 to the arm 70, being raised, to open the jaws, when the roll contacts with a cam surface 75, and lowered, to close the jaws when the roll is in the position shown. The arm 70 is actuated by a member 72 raised by a spring 97 and lowered by a roll 96. The finger 63 is actuated by an extension 83 raised by a spring 87 and lowered by a chain 86. The chains 86 are adjustably secured to an annular member 84, and the rollers 96 are adjustably secured to an annular member 94. These two members rise and fall vertically in timed relation to the rise and fall of the table so that the jaws are first closed and slide toward the margin of the upper until they reach the position shown, where the margin is pressed into an inclined groove 82a in each finger, the upper edge of which acts as a third jaw. The last is then forced into the upper and the upper margin drawn below and then inward of the edge of the insole. As the parts reach their final position, the jaws open the last descends and the upper jaws act as ejectors to facilitate the removal of the work.
