The invention concerns machines for the finishing of edges of uppers used in shoe manufacture. by means of burning with a hot tool. With these machines, the leather stock to be worked comes in contact with the hot tool and burner that is at standstill, and is advanced by jumps. Particularly in the case of thin and flappy leather, this causes formation of Wrinkles.
According to the present invention, in combination with means for intermittent advancing of the work piece, and in the intervals between said advancement steps, a burning tool that lowers until touching the edge of the leather piece and subsequently is lifted in such a manner that if the piece continues advancing, it is free from any contact with the hot tool.
Consequently, during the feed movement, the hide can be easily handled. Moreover, the burnt edge, not being any longer in contact with the tool, is free to follow 'the natural movement of curvature due to heating and, therefore, this effect is attained without needing application of the hammers as provided to this purpose in the known machine.
Furthermore, the fact that the burning tool is not in contact with the work piece but at the time at which it is operative, whence in the subsequent time interval, in which it is not operative, transfer of heat being due to contact, it has time to recover heat without needing recourse to the contrivances usual with the conventional machines, and causing inconstancy of working temperature and, therefore, a work not free from defects and overheating of the tool as with overall duration of same.
These and other features of the invention, together with some constructional particulars and combinations of parts will be described and illustrated in an example of a machine, and will be dened in the appended claims.
With reference to the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a machine embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of a particular of the machine, showing a leather piece that is in the burning stage therewith.
Fig. 3 is a View of the same particular showing a leather piece that is in the stage immediately subsequent to the burning stage therewith.
On the Work bench I there is fixed an arm 2, below said plane there is rotatably supported a transmission shaft 3 onto which there is fitted a drive flywheel-pulley 36.
On the shaft 3 there is fixed an eccentric 4, on which there is slidable a collar 5 provided with a forl6, with which the end of a rod 'I is articulated. The rod 1 is provided at its other end with a head 8 wherein there is housed in a mutually rotatable manner a pin 9, the axis of which is parallelto the axis of the shaft 3 and the ends of which are rigidly connected with the carriage I0 vslidable on four small columns I I. Only two'of these columns are visible, the other two being concealed therebehind. The uprights I I are xed on a support I2 apt to move in translation horizontally on the guide I3, with which the bench I is provided. l
Said translation is obtained by way of the handle I5, on the rotation pin of which there is fitted an eccentric I'I cooperating with a channel I8 Vprovided in the support I2. The carriage I0 presents a head I4, on which there is vertical-l lyl slidable the slide I5, onto which a pin I9 is fastened.
The slide is provided with a vertical'channel not visible in the drawing, with which engages the eccentric 20 tted onto the small shaft 2I arranged rotatable and parallel to the pin 9 in the carriage IU and controlled by means of the lug 22. On the slide I5 there is xed and electrically insulated a plate 23 terminating the electric leads 24 carrying the current. the burning tool 25. Onto the end of shaft 3, a second eccentric 26 is fitted on which a collar 37 is rotatable and moving as a unit together with a toothed member 35.
Said collar is applied onto the table I by means of a double vertical and horizontal slide, whence it is apt to undergo vertical and horizontalvdisplacements at the same time.
If the shaft 3 is in rotation, the member 35 undergoes in succession cyclically a lift, an advancement, a descension, a back displacement. This constitutes what is conveniently termed a walking beam type of feed member. Also in contact with the toothed surface a foot 2I is provided carried by the leg 28 slidable in the guide 29 provided in the arm 2, under the action of the spring 30.
In register with the toothed member '35, the table 2 presents a slot through which the said member 35 appears if it is in the lifted position. lBeloW the members I9 and 25, a rest 3I is provided equipped with a stem 32 slidable in the vertical guide 33 rigidly connected to the table 2. Said rest 3I is elastically supple overcoming the elastic force of the spring 34 in cooperation with the pin I9 if the latter descends in such a manner as to take excessive stress away from the tool.
In operation, the work piece is gripped between The plate 23 carries the toothed member 35 which is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, and the foot 21, in such a manner that its border projects above the supple rest 3I asA can be seen'in Fig. 1, .and is dragged forwardin the forward displacement `of member 35. While the shaft 3 and the eccentrics 4 and 26 rotate, the member 35 lowers beneath the plane of the table as in Fig. 2 operating the advancement of the work piece. At the same time, the pin I9 has come to contact the rest 3I-which has lowered and the edge of the piece of leather has assumed the position approximately of Fig. 2, in which also the heated tool 25 has come to contact the edge of the leather performing burning and the said leather edge while restingV on the pin I9 tends to curve as shown in the figure .by effect of heat.
By a subsequent rotation of the shaft 3, the member 35, still remaining below the level'of the working plane, shifts backward, while the members' I9 and 25 rise, followed to a certain extent bythe rest 3| under the action of the spring 34. At this stage, the leather piece is placed and the pin I9 helps the edge of the leather piece to curve approximately as indicated in Fig. 3.
By further rotation of the shaft, the mutual position of the various parts is restored as indicated in Fig. l.
By handling the handles I6 `and 22 respectively, it is possible, in aknown manner, to laterally adjust the position of the burning tool'with respect to the edge of the workpiece or to vary the distance of the members I9 and 25 `from the rest plane 3I Although theY invention is described as embodied with a particular machine-'it` shouldbe clearly understood that the invention isY not'limited in its application to the particular'machine that has been illustrated and described.
We claim:
1. A machine for finishing the edges of uppers and other leather pieces as used in shoe manufacture comprising, in.^combination, a support surface on' Whichthe piece to be Worked is made to advance, there being a slot in said support surface, a walking beam feed element moving in said slot alternately forward above and backward'beneath said surface, a burning tool displaceable vertically on the edge of the piece to be worked, driving means for both said feed element and said tool acting so as to move said tool to contact said piece when said feed element is below said surface, and to move said tool away from said piece when said feed element is above said surface.
2. A machine according to claim 1, also including a pin, united rmly to said burning tool and positioned laterally with respect thereto, and toward the edge of the work piece, a resilient rest for the edgeof the Work piece, and means for causing said tool tov make contact with said piece when said feed element is below said surface, and tu remove said tool from said piece whensaid feed element is above said surface.
