Abstract

The system comprises a tinted transparent screen supported on a roller, a d.c. motor driven spiral gear shaft and a slide rail, and employs a photocell which is located on the vehicle windscreen to actuate the motor, when sunlight is detected, to lower the screen. When the sunlight ceases the motor raises the screen. A switch means is provided for manually actuating the motor. <IMAGE>

Description

Automatic Windscreen Sunlight Shade System Introduction Sunlight shade well known in all motor vehicles, where it's purpose is to reflect the direct sunlight beam from the driver's eyes as well as the passenger in the front seat of the vehicle.
Due to the change of the sunlight beam angle during the driving conditions, there are several positions on the road that the direct sunlight cannot be reflected away by the conventional sunlight shade. Therefore, sunlight beams will find their way directly to the driver's visibility sometimes dangerously giving the driver shorter time to react depending on his speed.
The present invention provides an automatic windscreen shade system comprising a photocell, an electrical motor a transparent shade revolving on a free shaft together with slide rollers, two microswitches and slide rails.
System Construction The system comprises of the following items: - A photocell fixed on the top of the vehicle's windscreen at the centre.
- A DC motor with a piral gear shaft. This combination of motor and shaft will be fixed to one side of the two widscreen side supporting panels.
- A deep coloured transparent shade made of a transparent sheet rolled on a free revolving shaft. Two slide rollers are fixed at both ends of the sheet, one free to run through a slide rail and the other is in the shape of an internal spiral gear and geared to the spiral shaft.
This roller will run through a slide rail and shall be named as "powered slide roller".
The above shade will be fixed to the top of the vehicle's roof at the front windscreen. The powered side slide rail will be fixed to the windscreen side supporting panel on the passenger side. The other slide rail will be fixed on the driver's side.
- Two microswitches fixed at the top and bottom of the powered slide rail.
- An electrical circuit using a multi function relay is employed.
System Operation The electrical circuit will only have power when the vehicle's ignition switch is on. When a sunlight beam is subjected on the photocell the multi function relay will operate two relay switches (S1 & S2, referring to electrical circuit diagram).
The motor in this situation is powered to run the sunlight shade downwards. When microswitch no.2 is pushed,i.e.when the sunlight shade had reached the bottom of the slide rails, power to the motor will be disconnected.
When the sunlight beam disappears, the photocell will cease sending a current. This will cause the multi function relay to operate another two relay switches(S3 & S4) that will then power the motor in the other direction ,i.e.to roll up the sunlight shade. When microswitch no.1 is pushed power to the motor will cease.
Discussion: It would be advantageaous to use a photocell sensetive to sunlight only. This is to avoid operation of the system while for example driving at night and being subjected to other vehicle lights or street lights.
Furthermore the system has manual but tom to enable the driver use the sunlight shade at his convenience or at times when the photocell fails to operate the system due to dirt accumulation on the windscreen.
