Abstract

A roof tile or slate retainer has one end 10 formed for attachment (eg nailing) to a wooden roof batten and an opposite end formed with a hook or hooks 14 for location over the lower edge of a roof tile or slate to prevent the latter lifting in a high wind. The ends of the retainer are interconnected by a link portion 16 which extends under the tile or slate. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Roof Tile or Slate Retainer Field of the invention This invention relates to a roof tile or slate retainer for preventing roof tiles or slates becoming dislodged in high winds.
Summary of the invention According to the invention a roof tile or slate retainer has one end for attachment to a roof batten and an opposite end formed with a hook for location over the lower edge of a roof tile or slate to retain the latter, said ends being interconnected by a link portion which in use extends under the tile or slate.
Said opposite end of the retainer may be bifurcated, having two spaced hooks to engage over the lower edge of the tile or slate at two spaced positions.
Said one end of the retainer may have a hook for hooking over the roof batten, and/or said one end of the retainer may have a hole for nailing the said one end of the retainer to the batten.
In a first embodiment of the invention, the retainer is integrally formed from a single piece of strip metal or plastics, but in a second embodiment said one and opposite ends are interconnected by a link portion which affords adjustment in the distance between said one and said opposite end of the retainer1 to enable the retainer to be used with tiles or slates having differing dimensions from the upper edge to the lower edge. The link portion may be a plastics tie with serrations which engage, with a ratchet action, with projections on a member providing said opposite end of the retainer.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the first embodiment, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the second embodiment.
The first embodiment of retainer is integrally made from metal or plastics and has one end folded to form a hook 10 for hooking over a roof batten. The opposite end of the retainer is bifurcated, terminating in two arms 12 the extremities of which have hooks 14 for location over the lower edae of a roof tile or slate to retain the latter in position. The ends of the retainer are interconnected by a stem 16 having a double fold which provides a degree of dimensional tolerance and enables the stem to be tensioned to apply a retaining force to the tile.
In use, the hook 10 of the retainer is located over the wooden roof batten and the spaced hooks 14 engaged over the lower edge of the roof tile or slate, the stem 16 and arms 12 extending below the tile or slate. The spaced hooks 14 provide firm mechanical retention for the lower end of the tile or slate and prevent the latter being lifted in a high wind.
In the second embodiment shown in Figure 2, the retainer is in three parts, namely a bracket 18 for attachment to the roof batten, a bifurcated portion 20 having two spaced hooks 22 for engagement over the lower edge of the roof tile or slate and an interconnecting tie 24 of synthetic plastics material. The bracket 18 has a hole 26 for nailing the bracket to the roof batten and an aperture 28 for receiving the hooked end 30 of the tie 24. The tie carries serrations which engage, with a ratchet action, with projections (34) on the end of the stem 32 of the portion 20. In use the tie 24 is pulled through the projections on the stem 32 to tighten the hooks 22 against the lower edge of the tile. Any surplus length of tie 24 is then cut off. The tie 24 and the stem 32 extend beneath the retained tile, the hooks 22 lipping around the lower tile edge. This provides a firm attachment for the tile or slate, and the arrangement also enables tiles or slates having differing dimensions between their upper and lower edges, to be retained.

Claims (9)

1. A roof tile or slate retainer having one end for attachment to a roof batten and an opposite end formed with a hook for location over the lower edge of a roof tile or slate to retain the latter, said ends being interconnected by a link portion which in use extends under the tile or slate.
2. A retainer according to claim 1, wherein said opposite end of the retainer is bifurcated, having two spaced hooks to engage over the lower edge of the tile or slate at two spaced positions.
3. A retainer according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said one end of the retainer has a hook for hooking over the roof batten.
4. A retainer according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said one end of the retainer has a hole for nailing the said one end of the retainer to the batten.
5. A retainer according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the retainer is integrally formed from a single piece of strip metal or plastics.
6. A retainer according to claim 5, wherein the link portion has a double fold which provides a degree of dimensional tolerance and enables the stem to be tensioned to apply a retaining force to the tile or slate.
7. A retainer according to any of claims 1 to , wherein said one and opposite ends are interconnected by a link portion which affords adjustment in the distance between said one and said opposite end of the retainer, to enable the retainer to be used with tiles or slates having differing dimensions from the upper edge to the lower edge.
8. A retainer according to claim 7, wherein the link portion is a plastics tie with serrations which engage, with a ratchet action, with projections on a member providing said opposite end of the retainer.
