Description

Jointing Ring and Pipe Joints Incorporating the same This invention relates to jointing rings for pipes, and pipe joints incorporating jointing rings.
More particularly the invention relates to elastomeric jointing rings for providing a seal between pipe joints of the spigot and socket kind.
It is to be understood that by the expression "pipe" as used herein is intended to include pipes and tubes as such, and also pipelike fittings used within pipework such as elbows, 'T' bends and similar fittings, and also other elements such as valves incorporated in pipework and having parts of a pipe-like nature.
Joints of the above mentioned kind are utilised in the inter-connection of pipes of water or gas carrying capability for example and comprise a socket at one end of a pipe having a recess within which is located an elastomeric jointing ring, which is sealingly engageable with a spigot of the next adjacent pipe on insertion into the socket so as to provide a sealed joint.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and effective form of jointing ring for pipes, and a pipe joint incorporating such a jointing ring.
In accordance with the one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a jointing ring for a spigot and socket pipe joint comprising a sealing body of elastomeric material adapted in use to be located in and substantially to fill an appropriate shaped annular recess in a pipe socket; a nose part of saidbody having its radially inner surface generally parallel with the pipe axis, and being arranged for disposition in use at the mouth end of the socket; a holding ring of rigid or semi-rigid material disposed in a locating channel around the radial inner wall of the sealing member axially inwardly of the nose part and having its radial inner surface generally flush with the adjacent nose part; and an annular spigot sealing flap integral with and extending radially inwardly from the sealing body and adapted to engage a spigot upon entry into the socket for sealing therewith, said sealing flap being on the axially inner side of the holding ring.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a spigot and socket pipe joint in which the socket has an annular recess around its inner surface, and a jointing ring is disposed between the spigot and socket, the jointing ring comprising a sealing body of elastomeric material substantially filling said recess, an annular spigot sealing flap integral with and extending radially inwardly from the sealing body and engaging and sealing the spigot within the socket; the sealing body having a nose part at the axially outer end of the recess, the nose part having a generally cylindrical inner surface; and a holding ring of rigid or semi-rigid material disposed in a locating channel around the radially inner wall of the sealing body between the sealing flap and the nose portion and having an inner wall substantially continuous with the inner wall of the nose portion.
The sealing flap is preferably inclined axially inwardly of the socket when the jointing ring is located within the socket.
Jointing rings have previously been proposed in which a holding ring is located within their radially inner surface to ensure that the jointing ring is held in position in the socket during and after make-up of the joint, the rigid or semi-rigid holding ring used for this purpose having the effect of stiffening the jointing ring, and the holding ring having the additional effect of preventing twisting of the jointing ring upon insertion of the spigot. It has been found previously that flaps disposed axially outwardly of the socket on the jointing ring can interfere with this function of the holding ring.
It is to be noted that with the jointing ring of the present invention and the joint incorporating the jointing ring, there is no flap disposed axially outwardly of the socket so that the spigot on entering the socket locates upon and holds the jointing ring firmly in position before engaging the sealing flap which, if the jointing were not by then held firmly, might tend to dislocate or turn the jointing ring within its recess.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood one embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is of a jointing ring in accordance with the invention in situation in a socket with the partial insertion of a spigot, the drawing being a sectional view through one half of the jointing ring and the associated socket and spigot members.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the jointing ring 1 comprises a sealing body 2 formed of an elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber having an outwardly convex radially outer wall 3 engaging and substantially filling a recess 4 formed in the wall of the socket 5 of a pipe 6.
On the radially inner wall of the jointing ring, extending from the sealing body portion, is an inclined annular sealing flap 7 extending towards the axially inward part of the joint.
Axially outwardly from the sealing flap, within a recess 8 in the internal wall of the sealing body 2, is a holding ring 9 formed of an appropriate semi-rigid thermoplastic material or a metal, for example.
Extending axially outwardly from the holding ring is a nose part 10 of the sealing body having an internal wall 11 of a cylindrical configuration extending substantially continuously from the cylindrical inner wall 12 of the holding ring 9.
In operation of the invention the jointing ring 1 is located within the recess 4 within the socket 5 such that the radially outer wall 3 of the jointing ring mates upon the inner surface of the recess 4. The location of the jointing ring within the recess is assured by means of the semi-rigid holding ring 9. It is to be observed that the nose part 10 of the sealing body 2 of the jointing ring 1 is chamfered 13 at its tip to ease access of an incoming spigot 14 into the socket. Upon insertion of the spigot (of another pipe), the spigot first of all lightly engages the inner wall 11, 12 of the nose part of the jointing ring and then the holding ring before engaging and bending the sealing flap 7 radially outwardly and axially inwardly so as to form a seal between the socket 5 and the spigot 14.
Any tendency of the sealing flap 7 to turn the jointing ring 1 within the recess 4 in the socket 5, or to move the jointing ring 1 axially from its location in the recess 4 is adequately resisted by the firm location of the sealing portion 2 between the spigot 14 and the recess 4 in the 5 socket at that position.
By means of the invention we have provided a jointing ring and a pipe joint incorporating such a jointing ring, of positive location in which its retention in its correct disposition within the joint before and during after the spigot is ensured by the holding ring and by the disposition of the nose part of the sealing portion.
