Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO COUPLING BRANCH PIPES TO MAIN PIPES (71) We, WAVIN B.V., a Dutch Corporate body, of Handellaan 251, Zwolle, Holland, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to coupling a branch pipe to a main pipe.
The invention provides a coupling for coupling a branch pipe to a main pipe, said coupling comprising a tubular member, one end portion of which is provided with an external thread and is adapted to receive a branch pipe, and the other end portion of which has a radially outwardly extending collar and is adapted to be inserted through an opening made therefor in the side of a main pipe; a packing sleeve of an elastically deformable material positionable between the rim of the opening and the tubular member, one end portion of the sleeve being engageable with said collar and the other end portion of the sleeve having a circumferential lip engageable with the exterior of the main pipe adjacent the rim of the opening; a ring member adapted to engage the sleeve adjacent the rim of the opening; and a nut engageable with said external thread and adapted to abut the ring member such that, in use, tightening of the nut causes the collar to move towards the rim of the opening and thus the material of the sleeve to be deformed to provide a seal between the rim of the opening and the tubular member.
The invention also includes a branch pipe and a main pipe coupled together with a coupling as defined in the preceding paragraph.
In order that the invention may be well understood, an embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, will now be described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which is an axial, part cross-sectional view of a coupling shown coupling a branch pipe to a main pipe.
In the drawing, there is shown part of a main pipe 1. The main pipe 1 is provided with an opening 2. The diameter of the pipe 1 is considerably larger than that of the opening 2.
A branch pipe 19 is coupled to the main pipe 1 by means of a coupling, which includes a tubular member 3 which has an end portion 3a formed as a socket and provided with a sealing member 20 forming a seal between the socket and the branch pipe 19. The other end portion of the tubular member 3 has a radially outwardly extending collar 5 and is inserted through the opening 2 which is sized so as to allow the collar 5 to pass therethrough.
A packing sleeve 6 of an elastically deformable material is positioned between the rim 17 of the opening 2 and the tubular member 3.
One end portion of the sleeve 6 engages the collar 5 and the other end portion of the sleeve has a circumferential lip 7 which is configured so as to engage the exterior of the pipe 1 adjacent the rim 17.
A ring member 21 is provided with radially outer and inner walls 12 and 13 which are provided with oppositely facing frusto-conical end faces which respectively engage the exterior of the pipe 1 adjacent the rim 17 of the opening and the sleeve 6. Radial walls 11 interconnect the annular walls 12 and 13. The lower edges of the walls 11 (as viewed in the drawing) are shaped to match the curvature of the pipe 1 and are provided with recesses 23 accommodating the lip 7 of the sleeve 6.
A nut 15 engages an external screw thread 16 on the portion 3a of the tubular member and abuts the ring member 21, a projection 14 of the ring member engaging the nut 15 in a recess 22 thereof. A radial face of the ring member engages a shoulder 24 on the tubular member.
When the nut 15 is tightened, the collar 5 of the tubular member 3 is caused to move towards the rim 17 of the opening 2. Since the ring member 21 remains in engagement with the pipe 1 and the sleeve 6, the material of the sleeve 6 between the end face 9 of wall 13 of the ring member and the collar 5 is deformed to provide a seal between the rim 17 and the tubular member 3.
It will be noted that the frusto-conical end face 9 of wall 13 of the ring surface engages a corresponding face 8 on a neck portion 10 of the sleeve 6 between the lip 7 and the remainder of the sleeve. Accordingly, the end face 9 serves to retain the lip of the sleeve in position as well as acting with the collar to deform the material of the seal between the collar and the end face as described above.
In order to accommodate frequently occurring small variations in the wall thickness of the main pipe I and to prevent the sleeve being pushed away from the tubular member between the interior of the pipe 1 and the collar 5 when the nut 15 is tightened, the surface 4 of the collar 5 which engages the end portion of the sleeve is curved and connects smoothly with the external surface of the tubular member 3 adjacent the collar, and the sleeve 6 is provided with a corresponding curved surface. The provision of these curved surfaces enables the sleeve to slide over the surface 4 during tightening of the nut rather than become separated from the tubular member.
It will be appreciated that the provision of the circumferential lip 7, greatly assists fitting of the sleeve within the opening and retention of the sleeve in position during tightening of the nut 15.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A coupling for coupling a branch pipe to a main pipe, said coupling comprising a tubular member, one end portion of which is provided with an external thread and is adapted to receive a branch pipe, and the other end portion of which has a radially outwardly extending collar and is adapted to be inserted through an opening made therefor in the side of a main pipe; a packing sleeve of an elastically deformable material positionable between the rim of the opening and the tubular member, one end portion of the sleeve being engageable with said collar and the other end portion of the sleeve having a circumferential lip engageable with the exterior of the main pipe adjacent the rim of the opening; a ring member adapted to engage the sleeve adjacent the rim of the opening; and a nut engageable with said external thread and adapted to abut the ring member such that, in use, tightening of the nut causes the collar to move towards the rim of the opening and thus the material of the sleeve to be deformed to provide a seal between the rim of the opening and the tubular member.
2. A coupling as claimed in claim 1, wherein the lip of the sleeve is connected to the remainder thereof by a neck portion.
3. A coupling as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said ring member has a substantially frusto-conical face adapted to engage the exterior of the main pipe adjacent the rim of the opening and an oppositely facing substantially frusto-conical face adapted to engage a corresponding face on the sleeve.
