Tobacco pipes in which a perforated, spring-actuated piston d within the bowl a presses the tobacco constantly upwards against an annular flange b, the smoke being led off from a point f<1> about midway up the bowl side, are so constructed that the whole of the charge of tobacco is contained directly within the bowl. A metal or other plug c may be provided in the base of the bowl or an annular plug carrying the flange b may be screwed into the mouth thereof. The bowl itself may be made conical to engage a conical seating in a ring formed on the stem, radial passages leading to an annular groove in communication with the stem-bore being formed in the walls of the bowl. In a further modification, the flange b may be dispensed with, the bowl being so shaped that its axis, at the mouth, is inclined towards the mouthpiece. In other modifications, the bowl is formed in two parts screwed into a horizontal ring formed. integral with the stem, an annular space between the parts communicating with the stem bore, or the pipe has the appearance of an ordinary pipe, the bowl being divided horizontally into two parts screwed together, between which is an annular space communicating with the combustion space by horizontal or inclined duct's in the upper part, and with the stem bore by a vertical duct in the lower part of the bowl. According to the Provisional Specification, annular or spiral grooves may be provided in the stem for cooling the smoke, and the pipe may be constructed to be smoked in an inverted position.
