Abstract

220,980. Schurch, J., and Heise, W. H. May 1, 1923. Electromechanical apparatus. - Relates to a motor vehicle of the kind in which an internalcombustion engine drives a direct current electric generator having two commutators and two independent armature windings, current from the generator being supplied to two direct current series motors each driving a separate wheel of the vehicle. The generator is series wound, and the generator windings and motors may be connected in various multiple or series arrangements to give various forward and reverse speeds. The engine 4 drives the generator armature 9 having two commutators 14, 16 connected to their corresponding armature windings and also arranged in series with the field windings 19, 18. These circuits are connected to the contact points 32 - - 35 on the main controller, which has four positions 40 - - 43 giving three forward or three reverse speeds and a stop position. The motor armatures 68, 69 and the corresponding field windings 70, 71 are connected to the main controller contacts 36 - - 39, the direction of rotation of the motors being reversed by reversing the current through the field windings 70, 71 by means of a reversing contreller having two positions 58, 59. The generatcr circuits 10, 11 may be in multiple and the motors in series as in Fig. 6. Or the generator circuits may be in series with the motors in series as in Fig. 7 or in multiple as in Fig. 8. An exciting circuit supplied with current by a battery 21. may be provided for the generator.
