Abstract

An attachment 30 for a building comprises a downward channel 31 for receiving the upper edge of a facia board 14 and an upward channel 33 for receiving an upstanding elongate member 41a to resist material sliding off a roof. There may be a further upward channel 34 for supporting another elongate member 41b at a higher level than member 41a. The members 41a, 41b extending along the roof edge. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO BUILDING ATTACHMENTS This invention relates to building attachments.
According to this invention a building attachment comprises means for resisting material sliding off a roof, and support means for removably supporting the resisting means at or adjacent a roof edge.
The resisting means may comprise elongate upwardly extending means.
The support means may comprise means for embracing the upper edge of a facia board.
The support means may comprise an attachment having a main part from which extends on one side a channel for embracing the facia board and from which extends on the other side another channel for receipt of the elongate means.
Also according to the invention an attachment for a building comprises first means for detachable connection to a facia board and second means for receiving elongate means extending transversely of the attachment.
The attachment may comprise a main part from which extends on one side a channel for embracing the upper edge of a facia board, and on the other side another channel for receiving the elongate means.
There may be a further channel adjacent said another channel for receiving another elongate means transverse to the attachment.
Means may be provided for adjusting the effective width of the said channel on said one side.
The invention may be performed in various ways and two specific embodiments with possible modifictions will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a house roof and wall; Fig. 2 is a central section through a tiling attachment; Fig. 3 is an elevation in the direction of arrow A of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an elevation in the direction of arrow B of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a central section through another tiling attachment; and Fig. 7 is a side view of part of a house.
A roof structure of a house or the like comprises inner and outer spaced walls 10, 11, and a roof truss 12 resting on the inner walls 10.
A soffitt board 13 extends outwards on the top of the outer wall and is connected to an upright facia board 14 which is secured at 15 to a lower part of the roof truss 12. The board 14 may support a gutter 16.
A waterproof felt layer 17 is placed on the inclined part 18 of the roof truss and is held down by spaced battens 19. Tiles 20 are mounted on the battens 19 and overlap in the usual way. The bottom row of tiles extends outwards of the facia board 14. A plywood length 21 extends beneath the felt between the truss and the top of the facia board 14.
The felt, battens, tiles, soffitt and facia board are fixed by a tiler who stands and works on the roof and it is desirable to provide safety means to prevent the tiler and material falling from the roof.
In the present case safety means comprises elongate means extending along the edge region of the roof and supported by means detachably connectable to the building structure. Fig. 2 shows an attachment 30 adapted to be supported by the facia board 14.
The attachment 30 may be formed from welded steel strip and comprises a channel 31 extending in use downwards from a support part 32 and two adjacent channels 33, 34 extending upwards from the support part 32. The channel 31 is formed by members 35, 36 and is adapted to embrace the facia board 14 from above. The members 35, 36 have apertures 37 by which the attachment 30 can be removably secured to the board 14 using nails for example.
The channel 33 is defined by members 38, 39 and channel 34 by members 39, 40. In use two spaced attachments 30 (Fig. 7) support one or more foot boards 41.
Thus channel 33 may receive board 41a which may rest on the bottom of the channel 33 or may be at a greater height by resting on nails 42 extending in aligned apertures 43 in members 38, 39. The board 41a may be in channel 34.
In another srrangement board '4lea is in channel 33 and another board 41b is in channel 34 but at a raised level (Fig. 2). The boards 41a, ilb act as a barrier to material and/or the tiler sliding from the roof. The edge of the roof may need more than one board 41a and a gap 50 may be left for a ladder.
The felt is cut to permit the attachment 30 to be placed on the facia board 14.
The channels 33, 34 could be vertical but are preferably inclined outwards for example at 100 to the vertical.
The member 38 could be omitted.
In Fig. 6 the channel 31 is wider and member 36 mounts upper and lower structures 60, 61 which include a nut 62 fixed to the member 36 and in threaded engagement with a bolt 63 carrying inner female member 64. The bolt 63 can be rotated by bar 65 to move the female member in or out relative to the member 36 to grip the facia board 14 so that the arrangement of Fig. 6 can be used with facia boards of different thicknesses.
In a modification the attachment 30 is arranged to be detachably connected to the roof truss.
The boards 41a are at or adjacent the edge 70 of the roof. The tiles may for example be from 100 to 300 to the horizontal.
The boards 41a, 41b extend transversely of the attachment 30.
