Abstract
For a commercial vehicle is formed by pressing sheet material into a rigid vee shaped chanel 16, supported on and welded, bolted, rivetted or adhered to two pressed side members 10, thus forming a rigid low weight load container with the minimum of material, the minimum of welds and the lowest possible centre of gravity. Alternatively, the container may be made in two halves, each comprising a side and one half of the floor member, the two halves being joined by a single continuous weld and the pressed channel support member being fixed to the underside thereof. The container may form a closed tank or a platform. <IMAGE>
Description
Improvements in or relating to vehicle bodies
The present invention concerns improvements in or relating to vehicle bodies, especially but not exclusively open-topped load containers or platforms for commercial vehicles.
In the past load containers have often incorporated two longitudinal girders or strengthening members, running in the fore-and-aft direction, equispaced on either side of the central longitudinal axis of the container. These members have often been steel girders and have considerably increased the self-weight of the vehicle. As an increase in the self-weight of the vehicle leads to a decrease in its load-carrying capacity, atterrpts have been made in the past to reduce the weight of the longitudinal strengthening members. One such attempt has involved fabricating box section rrrters from folded aluminium and welding these to the underside of the floor member of the container. The fabrication of these box section members has been time consuming and expensive as it involves at least one weld running the full length of the member and two additional welds for each member, again running the full length of the member, to fix the rtnter to the underside of the floor member.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a load container for a vehicle having two side members supporting a single open topped channel floor member.
The channel floor member has a horizontal base and two upstanding upwardly diverging sides and outwardly directed flanges at the free end of each side.
Preferably the channel floor member is formed from a single sheet of material.
Preferably the two side members have a base which corresponds exactly to the profile of the outwardly directed flanges of the channel floor member.
Preferably the two side members fully support the channel floor member and are attached by continuous longitudinal welds at the outer edges of each flange and base.
Preferably the two side members and channel floor member are manufactured fran aluminium alloy.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accoxpanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 shows a cut away perspective view from above one side and the front end of a load container for a commercial vehicle.
Fig.2 shows a transverse cross section elevation.
A load container carprises two pressed side members 10, and at
their lower ends the sides have inwardly directed gussets 12 and bases
14. A longitudinally pressed channel floor irnter 16 is fixed to and
is supported by the bases 14 of the side members 10. The mezber 16 has a base 18 two inwardly diverging sides 20 which each terminate in an outwardly directed flange 22, the member being fixed to the side member 10 by continuous longitudinal welds 24 at the outer edge of each flange and base.
Box section strengthening members 26 are fixed to the upper edges of the sides and to its open rear end. The front 28 of the load container also has a box section member 26 fixed to its upper end.
The present invention thus provides a relatively lightweight rigid load container utilising the minimum of material and the minimun of welds.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the section of the channel member 16 can be modified to any suitable form.
The channel member 16 may be fixed to the side member 10 by means other than welding for example riveting, bolting or adhesives.
Additional strengthening may be incorporated in the channel member 16 and front 28 to provide mounting means to the vehicle chassis or. for tipping gear or the like.
The load container need not be an open-topped container similar to that illustrated in the drawing but could be a closed tank or platform.
In a further modification the load container is manufactured in two halves, each comprising a side and one half of the floor member, the two halves being joined together by a single continuous longitudinal weld to form the container. Fixed to the underside thereof is a single pressed channel support member whose profile corresponds exactly to the underside shape and size of the pressed container base. The channel support member is fixed to the underside of the load container by two continuous longitudinal welds located at the outer edge of each flange.
The channel support member is thus protected against impact damage and wear from abrasive materials.
